The headline writer did not read the story. Protests are being called music festivals, not raids.

LavaPlanet@sh.itjust.works on 22 Aug 21:49 collapse

Yeah and if you go on tiktok and search la music festivals or music festivals, it just shows you people saying protest coverage is now labelled this, they’re still censoring the actual footage of the protests. And they’re censoring different things for different countries.

RobotZap10000@feddit.nl on 21 Aug 09:40 next collapse

People clearly realize that these algorithms are suppressing dissidents and freedom of speech. Why do they continue to subject themselves to these hacky workarounds and self-censorship?

chobeat@lemmy.ml on 21 Aug 09:53 next collapse

because there are no viable alternatives for large outreach.

eldavi@lemmy.ml on 21 Aug 14:54 next collapse

only influencers and advertisers need the large outreach; a huge majority of people just passively use it.

chobeat@lemmy.ml on 21 Aug 15:08 next collapse

passive users don’t care about suppression and censorship

eldavi@lemmy.ml on 21 Aug 15:12 collapse

as well as having no good reason for being on those platforms.

onslaught545@lemmy.zip on 21 Aug 19:36 collapse

If you want your movement or important information to reach a bunch of people, you need to go to a platform that has a bunch of people.

eldavi@lemmy.ml on 21 Aug 19:46 next collapse

that’s still an influencer thing

Sounds like a job for the Fediverse…

Yes! Loops exists, which is a federated tiktok app. Doesn’t have the same content or algo, but it has the infrastructure we all want.

chobeat@lemmy.ml on 22 Aug 16:57 collapse

the fediverse is microscopic and the people you want to get involved politically probably stay away from it.

when the workaround is changing a word vs signing up on and learning how to use a whole new website?

yes

usefulchickadee@norcal.social on 22 Aug 21:09 next collapse

@yuri
Changing the word every other day in an endless game of whack-a-mole vs. signing up once on a new website?

All of us here know which is easier in the long run.

yuri@pawb.social on 23 Aug 01:27 collapse

yeah, but folks who are already bought into traditional social media aren’t making that same assessment.

why would anyone pay for streaming when you can get it all for free? i certainly don’t get it, but streaming services are wildly successful nonetheless.

ms_lane@lemmy.world on 23 Aug 03:49 collapse

No, it’s changing the words for a bit, then getting IP banned, then never going back.

That one isn’t a hypothetical, it’s why I’m here :)

Samsuma@lemmy.ml on 23 Aug 06:23 collapse

The reality is that apps like TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, etc… have marketing teams and entire institutions practically advocating for their use across the planet. In some parts of Asia and South America, you literally cannot get by without WhatsApp in more urbanized areas, for example.

This is the result of US imperialism. They have just enough data centers and server capacity to run hundreds of Instagrams if they wanted to, unlike the Global South (excl. China).

glimse@lemmy.world on 21 Aug 11:28 collapse

They should just train a bunch of pigeons to drop leaflets around town

US libs: “PEOPLE IN COMMUNIST CHINA ARE FORCED TO USE SLANG WHEN TALKING ABOUT CHINESE ATROCITIES TO GET PAST CENSORSHIP!!”

Also US libs: “Unalive” “Music Festival” Bleeping out Palestine “This is fine and way better than communist China”

Also interesting how Tiktok only started doing this after they were forcibly sold off from the Chinese parent company and was forced to conform to “Western values” eh?

Aria@lemmygrad.ml on 23 Aug 04:49 next collapse

Unalive started being widely used 2020-2021.

I don’t use mastodon exactly because I don’t want to put in the labor of figuring out what content to consume. I want to be in control of the logic, but the machine should be doing it. The fediverse fails because it thinks people who want control over their feed are fine with not putting in any labor at all, basically conceding to big platforms that the only way to customize a feed is in an exploitative, invasive way, which is obviously bullshit.

Samsuma@lemmy.ml on 23 Aug 06:15 collapse

do you really expect to be CC’d along with hundreds or thousands of others about ICE raids, never mind about literally any event involving injustice? And how about footage of said event? Where’s that going to be stored? As an attachment? Google Drive link?

When censorship of one of its worst kind is unfolding in front of you, where genocide is referred to as “water slide”, you instead blame the people for self-censoring? Get real.
