I’ve owned a half dozen VR headsets, starting with Oculus DK2 up to the Vision Pro. I currently use both the Vision Pro and a Meta Quest 3.
The software in the apple product is like nothing else on the market I’ve used. It’s not a perfect product, not even a great one really, but Apple have done a great job making VR/AR in their own style and I have a lot of optimism for this product line in their hands going forward. There’s a fair bit of new in visionOS that nobody else has done yet.
I don’t know what the BoM cost is for AVP1, but it’s almost certainly a lot higher than other flagship headsets on the market.

It was a great idea, complicated by outrageous production decisions.

In case anyone else misinterpreted the headline, Apple is not shelving the Vision Pro as a product line—just the current Gen 1 headset.
Apple has abruptly reduced production of the Vision Pro headset and could stop making the current version of the device completely by the end of 2024, The Information reports.
Citing multiple people “directly involved” in making components for the headset, the report says that the scaling back of production began in the early summer. This indicates that Apple now has a sufficient number of Vision Pro units in its inventory to meet demand for the device’s remaining lifespan through to next year.
Thanks. I usually use provided title but updated it slightly now.

I still love mine. Use it almost daily for media consumption, surfing the web, a few of the games on it, retro arch, and a massive MacBook display.

How is input lag for the MacBook? Friend of mine said it was bad enough that he couldn’t seriously use it that way. Not sure if others feel that way too. That would be my biggest use case for it…. Use it for work and having a massive screen.

The lag is zero for me, and I work in IDEs and other engineering tasks in it. I wear a solo band for hours comfortably

Damn that sucks. They had some awesome innovation there.
Probably a good time to pick one up just for the collection.
The Vision is not done yet. They will release a cheaper version and continue evolving it from there.
What innovation did they have? They took existing tech, made it fancy looking, and slapped an unobtainable price tag to it.
If you have ever used a HoloLens 2 or a standalone VR headset, you’ll find what Apple did is nothing new.
The interaction with the GUI is what I’m talking about.
