Boooooo

As someone who in an earlier era self-described as an unapologetic Apple fanboy, I’m surprised by how quickly and comprehensively they have flushed all that good will away. I was already critical of their increasingly visionless product strategy. And I had already tired of the repetitive, self-absorbed marketing. But, to see them capitulate to a fascist party on several symbolic points is too much. If they’re willing to fold on trivia like the Gulf of Mexico (in Maps), and fold on problematic platforms like Musk’s Twitter, then I have to assume every claim they make, (like their commitment to privacy) is equally hollow. JFC, I hate Apple so much.

Alphane_Moon@lemmy.world on 13 Feb 14:31 next collapse

It was easy to figure out that their marketing around privacy was complete bullshit. If you read their privacy policy (the current one or say one from ~10 years ago), it’s pretty clear they give themselves the right to collect everything and do whatever they feel like with your data. Sure, it’s all couched in comforting sounding language, but that’s just a ruse.

WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world on 13 Feb 14:38 collapse

They also state your sensitive data “can not be read by Apple”… That’s the kind of legalese that implies the surveillance state (anyone they grant access) can absolutely read your sensitive data.

Paul_Harts@mastodon.nl on 14 Feb 11:34 collapse

@WhatAmLemmy @Alphane_Moon it’s a searchable and well-known fact that about 10,000 times the government of the Netherlands asked Apple to handover the keys of a specific iCloud account. It’s also searchable in the database of the Dutch government in about 6600 cases per year(!) Apple does hand over these keys. In about 3000 cases Apple refuses to do so.

Skullgrid@lemmy.world on 13 Feb 15:10 next collapse

they have flushed all that good will away.

macs have always sucked, I have been forced to use them at work since '19 and the 2022 model they just gave me is the worst yet. the enter button is too fucking thin

DJDarren@sopuli.xyz on 13 Feb 16:48 next collapse

Macs are the only reason I still use Apple stuff. My M2 Air is a legitimate beast of a laptop which, 18 months on still has an all day battery.

When they lock down macOS as much as they have ios, that’s when I’m putting Linux on it.

ClassifiedPancake@discuss.tchncs.de on 13 Feb 22:42 next collapse

A too thin enter button makes it „the worst“? I would love to have your problems in life.

Macs have been amazing since Apple kicked Jony Ive out.

Skullgrid@lemmy.world on 14 Feb 03:44 collapse

this is on top of everything they’ve fucking done ever. From the ipod’s “Dump all your files, we’ll tag, them, don’t worry about where they go” to the shitty way they manage tabbing between windows.

it’s shit all the way down.

“it just works” my fucking ass.

fourish@lemmy.world on 14 Feb 17:24 next collapse

Too bad. I just bought one to use in my office with my own money because they tried to give me a PC.

fourish@lemmy.world on 14 Feb 17:24 next collapse

You’re complaining about a keyboard btw not a Mac. Lol.

Skullgrid@lemmy.world on 14 Feb 17:43 collapse

the keyboard is on my mac machine.

oktoberpaard@feddit.nl on 14 Feb 20:31 collapse

Do you by any chance use one with the ISO layout instead of ANSI?

Skullgrid@lemmy.world on 14 Feb 20:34 collapse

I had the ISO one forced onto me, yes.

I got my first iPhone in 2009. A 3GS. Since then I’ve had a 4S, 5, 6, XR, and 13 mini.

Two weeks ago I took delivery of a Google Pixel 9, onto which I immediately put de-Googled GrapheneOS.

16 years of iPhones, 18 years of Macs. My primary Mac is a 15" M2 Air, which, as soon as Apple drop macOS support for, will be getting Asahi and that’ll be that. Apple are probably the least surprising, but certainly the most disappointing to me.

I just can’t deal with big corps any more. They’re all shithouse. All of them. Bit by bit I’m learning how to self host a bunch of tools that until now I’ve been paying for.

Brodysseus@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 14 Feb 17:04 collapse

I have an m1 air that’s been pretty good to me, although in some obscure cases the x86 emulation fails and I get a segfault but all overlookable for the battery.

I think im going to pick up a thinkpad or something similar and run mint like a noob pretty soon.

Ever since ditching reddit and coming here I have degoogled my phone significantly and started using more FOSS and it feels good to be actually doing something other than complaining.

Im not all the way there, but actually taking action feels so good. Gonna ditch LinkedIn as soon as i get a tech job

aardvark@feddit.org on 13 Feb 19:21 next collapse

I hear you. Its painful to behold and feels like the end of en era. I think my old glasses tinted everything rose.

Paul_Harts@mastodon.nl on 14 Feb 15:30 collapse

@xenomor @cyrano I very much sympathise with you. I used to be unapologetic for everything Apple did. But the privacy washing really irks me. I’m a privacy hawk and either you do whatever you can to protect the privacy of your clients, or you don’t. There is hardly a sensible middle road.

reddig33@lemmy.world on 13 Feb 17:10 next collapse

I’m eating crow on this one. It’s time for Tim Apple to retire.

HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com on 13 Feb 18:58 next collapse

I can see why they were not before with the lack of an appropriate level of nazis content to befit apple devices. Im stating to think they will go the way of tesla. Would be funny if iphones and apple laptops became a redneck thing and city folks were putting lables on their laptops saying they bought them before.

superkret@feddit.org on 13 Feb 18:59 next collapse

Did they lose the lawsuit?

Apple Endorses Nazis

FTFY

turbineseaplane@lemmy.world on 14 Feb 16:31 next collapse

This was very disappointing to see

Apple doesn’t appear to stand for many of the things they used to (or at least I guess what I thought they maybe stood for)

It feels like so much of their marketing of values is just that … marketing

😕

fourish@lemmy.world on 14 Feb 17:23 collapse

Apple has had their arm twisted by the goon squad. That is all.

Kiss the ring or wake up with horse head in your bed.
