Any 13 Pro owners planning to upgrade after yesterday's event?

And if so, what are you getting?

I had been planning to upgrade this year, but haven’t been massively swayed by any of the phones. I can afford to upgrade, and would get £220 trade in with Apple which I’m unlikely to get next year, but battery health is still 83% for me after 4 years and easily sees me through the day. Any recommendations would be good, even if that’s to sit out an upgrade this year.

Nope… I’ve been a bit disappointed with the 16 Pro Max in general… I mean it’s bigger than my 13 Pro was, but I’m not seeing a massive improvement. 3 years seemed an okay time to wait but I feel like these days you can go a lot longer.

I just can’t believe with “Apple Intelligence” and all the bells and whistles they promote and all the shit they talk about previous generations and “the other platform” (never saying names) and they still mess up trace typing so badly. It’s just wild.

The one thing I did think about the event was, for the first time ever, I thought, if I needed a new iPhone right now… I’d go base, not pro. 2X Zoom is all I really use on my Pro Max. I don’t use the ultrawide. So the base does not have a telephoto, it has a 48MP camera, and it emulates 2X zoom by giving you a 24MP image of the middle. It’s literally just cropping. But it has the desired effect and it’s good enough for most people.

maxsettings@lemmy.ca on 10 Sep 12:16 next collapse

I picked up the 16 Pro last year specifically for the ProMotion display even though I am normally a base iPhone model purchaser. I knew I should have just waited a year. The base model iPhone 17 is probably the best price to feature iPhone in a while. I don’t know who the Air or Pro phones are for this year.

malwieder@feddit.org on 10 Sep 13:36 collapse

2x crop on a 48 MP sensor results in 12 MP, not 24 MP. Still looks fine though.

cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 10 Sep 22:36 collapse

Thanks. I didn’t think the math added up. That is what I heard them say in the keynote though. That the 2x zoom was 24MP.

malwieder@feddit.org on 10 Sep 10:50 next collapse

You can always get the battery swapped for a new one on your 13 Pro should it ever not get you through the day.

I have a 16 Pro so upgrading is probably kind of pointless.

I will say that the base model 17 looks pretty decent once prices at online shops come down a little. Finally you get the 120 Hz display.

I like the slimness/weight of the Air. The only thing really missing for me is the ultra-wide lens (also for macro photos), battery life would probably work out for me and other compromises are minor.

The 17 Pro isn’t a huge upgrade year-on-year, but they finally completed the transition to all 48 MP rear sensors, finally got a decent cooling solution and increased battery capacity (and 12 GB RAM). It finally feels pretty much complete instead of Apple purposefully holding back features. Bit of a bummer that we get the SIM tray version in Europe though, I’ve been using eSIM for years so the larger battery capacity - while I don’t need it in most cases - would’ve been appreciated.

I’m kind of holding out for a foldable iPhone anyway.

But back to you: what are you missing from your 13 Pro?

Quicky@piefed.social on 10 Sep 11:34 collapse

Well that's the thing, is anyone ever really missing anything of significance from a new phone?

Four years is the longest I've had one phone, so I just assumed I'd upgrade but now that I've got the opportunity, I'm not sure it's worth it. Probably the only two things I'm lacking are USB-C and whatever Apple Intelligence features eventually arrive.

I've always previously gone for top spec phones essentially for the cameras, but of all the new devices, the Air is weirdly the most appealing to me. Not because of its thinness, but because of its weight. Every time I pick up my daughter's 12 mini I'm jealous of how light it is compared to this brick of a 13 Pro.

ccunning@lemmy.world on 10 Sep 11:22 next collapse

I’ve got a 14 Pro.

I don’t think the Air is for me. I love the orange Pro but i didn’t really find any of the other features super compelling and I don’t think color alone is enough to justify a new phone.

I am a tad worried Apple won’t do colorful Pros again so I’ll be a bit sad if I miss out. Just not $1200 sad…

Upgrading to Airpods Pro 3, from Beats Studio Buds+.

Still waiting for new generation HomePod.

After their capitulation to fascism I will try to avoid buying any Apple products ever again. My 15 Pro will hopefully be my last. Their monopolistic walled garden is making it extremely difficult to migrate away gradually.

Just waiting on the future of GrapheneOS and linux phones given the EU’s recent attacks on encryption etc.

Quicky@piefed.social on 10 Sep 12:58 next collapse

This probably isn't the thread or community for you then.

Romkslrqusz@lemmy.zip on 10 Sep 15:13 collapse

You can be an enthusiast about a product while disagreeing with the actions or policies of the company that makes them.

The mentality you’re putting forward is the path to an echo chamber IMO

Quicky@piefed.social on 10 Sep 15:29 collapse

It’s my question! And clearly I’m interested in what model of iPhone people are upgrading to, not what obscure device and niche OS are you moving to as a result of global politics.

If I asked “Who should I bet on to win the next FIFA World Cup?” I wouldn’t want an answer similar to “I don’t follow football anymore because FIFA are a corrupt organisation, and I’m looking forward to the World Slackline Yoga Championships.”

Great, doesn’t help me at all, and why mention it in a football thread, in a football forum.

On your op you stated
“Any recommendations would be good”
But then this recommendation is no good… They are not suggesting you should get a calculator or a fidget spinner instead of a smartphone, which would be more like your example.

Quicky@piefed.social on 10 Sep 16:06 collapse

Fair enough, but the implication of what I’m asking is right there, and the community I’m asking it in should reinforce that.

But I think the example is accurate, because “smartphone” is analogous to “sport” in this context, for which I deliberately chose an obscure alternative.

Any 13 Pro owners planning to upgrade after yesterday’s event? And if so, what are you getting?

They answered these questions, though they’re not technically and iPhone 13 Pro owner specifically.

Based on your intention, perhaps you might have specified “which iPhone are you getting?”

Quicky@piefed.social on 10 Sep 16:53 collapse

Well yes, in hindsight I should have tailored the post that’s already in an Apple-specific community, asking about upgrades following the previous day’s iPhone launch, and which references Apple in the body of the post, for those people who were unable to infer the question’s intent.

muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works on 10 Sep 16:15 next collapse

I’m on the fence too. But Android is getting much worse with Google kneecapping alternative ROMs an Linux phones aren’t quite there yet.

My 14 pro has a tiny chip in the glass in the corner. If I replace the battery, then they will have to replace the screen too and my that point I’m halfway to a new phone anyway. So I’m looking at my options.

DJDarren@sopuli.xyz on 11 Sep 07:25 collapse

I’m a few months down that path already. Went from a 13 mini to a Pixel 9 running Graphene back in March and have been shifting most of my desktop computing over to Linux.

Honestly, Graphene is pretty nice. One hell of a learning curve, but now I’m beginning to figure out what I can do that isn’t possible with iOS, I can’t see that I’ll ever want to go back.

Waiting on the rumored Apple tv 4K 2025

Quicky@piefed.social on 10 Sep 13:00 collapse

So am I. I'm gutted it wasn't announced yesterday, it would have been an instant purchase.

DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 10 Sep 13:03 collapse

Rumors are perhaps pointing towards a planned October announcement.

Quicky@piefed.social on 10 Sep 13:08 collapse

I hope so. I've been holding off just getting another 4K for the TV that doesn't have one for so long now, under the assumption that a new one would be announced, but each event has let me down. To be honest, the current 4K is already excellent but I'd be gutted if I bought one and then a new model comes out the following week.

DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 10 Sep 15:01 next collapse

I hope it’s gaming focused. Apple is slowly moving towards AAA gaming, and now with the newest silicon able to do hardware level raytracing, it’s time they go into the living room. If a phone can do AAA games why can’t a apple micro console?

Can you imagine if Apple charges $99 for it again and you can play AAA games on it? Would bring some needed competition into the gaming space

Mpeach45@lemmy.world on 10 Sep 19:20 collapse

I wish Apple would apply at least a little pressure on devs to make all their iOS games playable on M series Macs.

I played a beta of Warframe on my M1 and it had a few easily smoothed out oddities with dealing with Mac interface issues, but was otherwise fine. Once it released for real, it could no longer be played on my Mac. You just can’t download it.

reddig33@lemmy.world on 11 Sep 01:27 collapse

Wait — According to you, this thread is exclusively about which iPhone we planned to buy. 🙄

Quicky@piefed.social on 11 Sep 02:58 collapse

That was the question, yes, and clearly that was the implication.

My suggestion that the other commenter probably didn't need to post their purchasing intent on a literal apple enthusiast community was based on the recommendation being nothing to do with Apple, and almost every sentence in it focusing on a political justification. There are countless communities more appropriate for those discussions on Lemmy.

That user had already decided they weren't buying any Apple product anymore. That's fine and I wish them well, but it doesn't answer my question, isn't related to the Apple event I referenced, was contra to the phrase Apple Enthusiast, and to be honest was tedious.

Sometimes people just want to buy some technology, not be lectured about monopolies, fascism and EU policy. Not every thread on this platform needs to be an exercise in holier-than-thou, guilt-based anti-capitalism.

I upgraded from the 13 to the 16 Pro last year. It was a huge upgrade. I'm sure the 17 is an even bigger upgrade.

Romkslrqusz@lemmy.zip on 10 Sep 15:12 next collapse

Just went from a 12 Pro Max to a 16 Pro Max

The higher refresh rate is nice, but I honestly could have stuck it out with the 12 for another year or two. Other than the camera and refresh rate, it doesn’t feel that different and I’m not much of a photographer.

Only reason I upgraded was that my carrier was offering an obscene trade in value, coupled with a promo discount the transition came close to being free ($2/mo for the next 2 years)

Petter1@discuss.tchncs.de on 11 Sep 06:25 collapse

I think, that I will upgrade to 16 pro max used by a friend who protects their phone that much, that it looks like new 😆

And I think, my 12mini goes down to my son, soon
