I’m kinda torn is the multitasking heavily dependent on keyboard/mouse or is it not that bad with touch?

I’ve been using the new windowed UI with touch, no keyboard or mouse. For a UI that belongs at a desktop, it’s fine on iPad but not nearly as quick as the Split and Slide system.

I am holding off but i dod try the update on a apple store ipad. Flicking works but getring the window to drag feels janky at times.

Stay away! I regret updating my 11” so much!

It brings 0 productivity to me having more than 2 windows, because they are too small for the big touch UI.

Even worse is, that it now takes sooo many steps until you are finally in splitscreen.

And then, you have a giant gab between the two apps.

This is definitely not a touch first user experience anymore and I hate it.

And to make matters even more worse, they removed SlideOver completely, even in fullscreen mode

I have been kicking and screaming about this since the start of the public beta. I think I’m just done with iPad now.

I’ve only done this a few times because frankly it’s more trouble than it’s worth. Every time I’ve done it has sucked though.

Split View and Slide Over was such a joy to use. The system that’s in place now is so much worse.

Vertical iPad, split horizontal with 4:3 Apple Maps, and Doggy Cam on the top setup in place of CarPlay.

I’ve had a horizontal iPad for years replacing the need for CarPlay, but now with the new setup, I have been able to configure maps and a couple other windows easily in the vertical iPad position for the first time ever.

I’ve also learned how double tapping the top of a window goes to full screen, and back to its memory window position.

Opinion: Split screen,+ hover window, + hover video player was my go to! Used it every day, that is 4 applications at once. I very much dislike that I am unable to return the original feature by making the selection in system settings. Why they removed the ability making only full screen is beyond me. However I’m figuring out how to return 95% of my original function while gaining much more.

Looks like the new multitasking is universally hated by everyone, so I’ll hold off in iOS 18 for a while more.

You can just not enable it

Petter1@discuss.tchncs.de on 24 Sep 10:17 collapse

No, they removed SlideOver completely and the fast way to split screen is missing as well

Two key features that are absolutely necessary for productivity on iPad

Now you are kinda forced to use it like a macOS device, with keyboard and mouse, which is so fucking stupid, because the UI is giant and not made for small windows like you have on a 11” device

sramder@lemmy.world on 22 Sep 06:20 next collapse

Never activated it intentionally and I never will.

I love the new window management. Apart from the loss of slideover, it’s a genuine improvement in every way. Especially love that I can use landscape-exclusive apps (mostly games) in portrait mode now

Deemo@bookwyr.me on 22 Sep 20:19 collapse

Do you use a larger, medium or small ipad?

I mostly use my ipad 9 as a note taking companion to my mac.

I am curious on older ipads given low ram how ios handles multiple windows.

Arcane2077@sh.itjust.works on 22 Sep 20:25 collapse

it’s an ipad air 5 (the one with the m1), just shy of 11”. I usually have the dock visible and a card game take up about half the screen, with three portrait apps taking up the remaining space. There’s a bit of overlap, but I don’t mind not seeing the corners of my chat/mail/whatever apps while racking up stacks in balatro
