Two additional hypotheses:

  1. They were larger than necessary because they were “one size fits all”. You’d pad them internally with some socks, as needed.
  2. The shoes survived because they were too large for most people. For example, other shoes could’ve been used by the soldiers, or simply stolen by outsiders once the fort fell into disuse.
