That news site is absolutely terrible

Fijxu@programming.dev on 18 Mar 13:00 collapse

I just closed it because it never loaded on my phone… Why so many bullshit to load a single article page?

Erasmus@lemmy.world on 18 Mar 12:06 next collapse

OP that site is absolute cancer on mobile.

Even with ad blockers.

ace_of_based@sh.itjust.works on 18 Mar 12:50 collapse

Besides the pop-up beggin me for a monthly tithe using my Google account (lol) i didn’t have any ads mobile with my librewolf browser (what got ubO built in). Did i stumble on the optimal setup?

Cheradenine@sh.itjust.works on 18 Mar 13:08 next collapse

I didn’t have any ads either with IronFox, but UbO had to chew on a lot to get there.

z3rOR0ne@lemmy.ml on 18 Mar 14:46 next collapse

Meh. Hard pass. I don’t read any article site that requires JS to be turned on.

Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 18 Mar 18:56 collapse

Joke’s on them, I don’t have a Google account!

But yah, I don’t see any ads either. I am running a PiHole and using Firefox Focus.

Treczoks@lemmy.world on 18 Mar 12:07 next collapse

Jokes on them. I do not have a YouTube account.

TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip on 18 Mar 12:40 collapse

Jokes on them, I’ve been thinking of quitting for a while now. If they pull a Spez, it’s just going to help me reach my goal.

ohellidk@sh.itjust.works on 18 Mar 12:25 next collapse

Please do!

LastStand@lemmy.world on 18 Mar 12:27 next collapse

I follow youtubers via RSS, so if they nuke my account… nothing happens.

big_slap@lemmy.world on 18 Mar 12:59 collapse

interesting… found a page that explains how to do this, will have to play around with it at some point

unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de on 18 Mar 15:49 collapse

Getting the channel ID can be annoying. This website www.rsslookup.com finds the RSS link for any youtube channel and many other sites for you.

RSS is my religion, my saviour, my love. With a nice RSS reader you can create categories, filter by keywords, add tags for archiving, etc

I have feeds for youtube, blogs, github release changelogs, protest announcements, news, …

AnarchistArtificer@slrpnk.net on 18 Mar 23:10 collapse

I really need to get round to setting it up. I know it won’t be difficult, I’ve just been pretty mentally drained and feel like I haven’t had the brain space yet

stoy@lemmy.zip on 18 Mar 12:35 next collapse

Humm, since I watch most of my yt on my iPhone on my commute I do get ads, at home I use uBlock, but only watch a small ammount of yt on my computer, I wonder if that is enough…

PattyMcB@lemmy.world on 18 Mar 12:36 next collapse

PeerTube, here I come

Fijxu@programming.dev on 18 Mar 13:04 collapse

Peertube is so good, we just need more people hosting content on it. Something like dedicated hosters for the content of each YouTube’s/Streamer/Country would be perfect. If people just use and upload videos on popular instances, the storage of that instance is going to ran out pretty easily.

ace_of_based@sh.itjust.works on 18 Mar 12:44 next collapse

Bitch i don’t even use your mail no more. Eat all of my ublock O

Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe on 18 Mar 12:47 next collapse

Account? What account

cavtroop@lemmy.world on 18 Mar 12:50 next collapse

Was anyone able to even read the article? Never heard of this site, the article barely loads (Ublock blocks 39 elements and Privacy Badger blocks 10), and the blurb above seems awfully corporate. Something seems funny with this post, either crap AI or someones 2 minute blog post fluffed up.

Have you ever considered the possibility that installing an ad blocker while watching YouTube videos could lead to your Google account being suspended? While such a measure has yet to be enforced, Google appears to be subtly signaling that account bans may be a potential course of action.

Since the beginning of 2024, Google has been actively cracking down on users who employ ad blockers to bypass YouTube advertisements. When the platform detects ad-blocking activity, it prompts users with a notification urging them to either subscribe to YouTube Premium or disable their ad blocker.

Now, Google is intensifying its efforts against ad-blocking tools. According to screenshots shared by Reddit users, the warning message has been updated with a more severe tone:
<img alt="" src="https://cdn-0.securityonline.info/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/ublock-not-blocking-youtube-adds-any-fixes-1536x864.webp">

As per YouTube’s Terms of Service, accounts that repeatedly or egregiously violate the platform’s policies may be temporarily or permanently suspended. While the notification does not explicitly state that using an ad blocker will result in an account ban, the warning that such activity constitutes a violation of the terms suggests that suspensions could be a plausible consequence.

It is undeniable that Google’s new warning carries an undertone of intimidation. However, at least for now, no reports have surfaced of users being banned solely for using ad blockers. It remains possible that Google’s intent is merely to deter users rather than implement outright account suspensions.

Should Google ultimately decide to enforce bans on accounts using ad blockers, it could lead to a significant number of suspensions, potentially causing a decline in YouTube’s traffic and user base. On the other hand, a temporary suspension policy might serve as a sufficient deterrent, prompting many users to reconsider their reliance on ad-blocking tools.

Good reminder to de google yourself.

Losing your YouTube account also means your gmail.

How many things do you have that use your gmail for authentication? Many services do not let you migrate off your signup email.

Start today: buy your own domain name and sign up to an email provider with it. It does not take long to set up, but make sure you have auto renewal enabled to protect yourself.

fuzzzerd@programming.dev on 18 Mar 14:21 next collapse

This is a big one. I have a lot of Google photos usage, and while I’ve tried OneDrive and PrintDrive, and while both are decent they don’t really match up and I’ve been hesitant to self host immach or something because to ke the point of a cloud photo storage was to be part of my 321 backup strategy.

Getting bounced from photos for youtube usage would really be a tough pill, but it would definitely hasten my exit.

unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de on 18 Mar 15:51 next collapse

YSK you can export all your subscriptions and import them into newpipe.

Same with all other account data. Back it up.

grue@lemmy.world on 18 Mar 17:39 next collapse

What takes a long time is notifying everyone you want to continue being able to communicate with of your new email address.

wise_pancake@lemmy.ca on 18 Mar 20:10 collapse

Yeah, this is the most annoying part by far

That and services that don’t let you change your email to migrate to a new one.

Don’t use your yt account for email or anything else.

Grayjay will open YouTube links too among other services

Not sure how private that it is but deff better than the sundar the creep app

z3rOR0ne@lemmy.ml on 18 Mar 14:54 next collapse

Lol. Use Libredirect extension to redirect all YouTube URLs in your browser to an invidious instance, don’t even worry if video doesn’t load, copy url, yt-dlp said url, make sure to add sponsor block flags to yt-dlp command. Don’t even need ublock. mpv your ad free sponsor less video, hold onto it forever if you want.

Keep making GrapheneOS compatible phones Google.

boreengreen@lemm.ee on 18 Mar 18:03 next collapse

Oh, i didn’t realise I can use sponsorblock with yt-dlp. Neat!

Cort@lemmy.world on 18 Mar 18:11 collapse

Does it mark the sponsors for skipping, or completely not download the sponsor sections? Once in a while I’ll actually watch those ad spots from a few creators

scutiger@lemmy.world on 18 Mar 18:28 collapse

It’s crowdsourced. Viewers tag sections as sponsor segments and the extension skips those sections.

Cort@lemmy.world on 18 Mar 19:21 collapse

Yeah I know what it is, and how it works online, but when it’s used with YouTube-dlp does it actually download the whole video and mark the skips, or does it skip downloading those parts entirely?

z3rOR0ne@lemmy.ml on 19 Mar 02:21 collapse

yt-dlp edits the video once its downloaded on your device. So when the sponsor mention comes up, it just cuts to the next piece of content that comes after the sponsor mention. It does download the entire video, but then it uses ffmpeg (I think) to edit the sponsor mentions out.
