Microsoft: Word deletes some documents instead of saving them (www.bleepingcomputer.com)

As the company explains, this bug only impacts users of Word for Microsoft 365 version 2409, build 18025.20104. Furthermore, this problem only arises when users close Word after editing and are prompted to save. After saving their changes this way, the file may disappear.

Ah, the joys of using “standard” software.

So I have not heard of anything like this happening before… How do you come to such a conclusion?

📎 It looks like you’re trying to save a document. Well fuck you, I’m deleting it.

Zier@fedia.io on 08 Oct 2024 12:24 next collapse

I would never save my document in the cloud, and would never trust microsoft to house it. They've had 2 control panels for a decade, or longer?
How's that Zune doing. Here, let me look it up on my Windows Phone.

Eheran@lemmy.world on 08 Oct 2024 13:10 collapse

So you would not trust anything unless it has a 100 % flawless record at doing everything? What do you trust?

Death.

Not only does SaaS hold our data hostage, not only does it allow companies to revoke access to software at any time, we are all subject to the instability of frequent software updates, and changing whims of the software requirements.

Nothing about SaaS is convenient. When I install dumb software on my computer, I do it once and forget about it: it doesn’t need security because it isn’t connected to the internet, I can use a version I am happy with in perpetuity, and I don’t have to worry about where my data is. Now that is convenient!

SaaS is a giant scam and software users have all been conned.

Yes, but you’re missing out on them completely redesigning the interface right after you get familiar with it. Think of the time waste you’re missing out on!

This issue has nothing to do with SaaS and everything to do with regular software updates (which are not limited to SaaS). Change the package to “LibreOffice Writer” and the delivery to “pacman -Syu” and suddenly the same bug has the potential to hit me. Hell, I have (well, had) floppies fresh from the store that introduced bugs into existing software back when I was a kid. Bugs will always exist and there isn’t enough regression testing in the world to ensure they don’t happen in the future.

All of your SaaS points are correct they just don’t apply here. We should be mad about the lack of testing in this instance.

I mostly agree with you, but this bit specifically is a little bit over simplistic.

LibreOffice?

Proton Docs?

Just saying.
