I’m sure it still has a ways to go and adoption is key but this just sounds like what the internet honestly needs to fundamentally exist
This isn’t just about connecting platforms—it’s about fundamentally rethinking how social media works. Instead of being trapped in walled gardens, your content, your followers, and your identity can move freely across the open web.
I agree. For example there are some groups on fb I would like to be a part of but I hate the fact that I have to have a fb account

Fb does not work from my phone, it gets glitchier every year. They are too busy on their stupid metaverse and counting their money to fix those glitches apparently.
To be clear, the announcement has been made, but federation isn’t actually enabled yet, at least not on the official instance. Verified by searching for loops accounts from mastodon.social and vice versa.
There is one you have to sign up for on their site. I’m assuming it’ll be GA shortly.

For anyone else who was thinking of starting an instance, local storage is still a no-go right now
S3-Compatible Storage Required Currently, Loops requires an S3-compatible filesystem (like AWS S3, MinIO, or DigitalOcean Spaces) for avatar and video storage. Support for local storage is on the way but is not yet implemented. Please ensure you have S3 credentials ready before proceeding.

To be fair, you can simply selfhost MinIO.

Good to know, thank you! I haven’t touched S3 storage yet in my self hosting journey

I donated sometime during the big fundraiser in January or so. It took a while but they did release server code a few months ago, and it’s nice to see that it’ll federate with other services soon.
did they fix the feed and algorithm issues yet? or is it still doing the thing where it shows you the same feed every time you open the app.
edit: just reinstalled to check. it doesn’t seem to have been updated since February and the feed issue still persists. that is a shame. I hope they can fix it.

Very nice. Welcome to the party.
This is great! I may get back into this. Does anyone know if there is a directory of instances?
I have no idea but I doubt there any, federation just happened. Could be wrong tho
https://fedidb.com/software/loops is the only one I found so far
Fantastic. Looks like there are a few that people have spun up. Thanks!
Also loops.fediverse.observer/list
“Loops is a short video sharing platform.”
Is it like some FOSS Tiktok alternative?
No clue, I just followed a couple of links deep and found that description. I guess TikTok/ Vine.
Precisely
Can people even setup their own Loops instance yet?
I have Seen a post that it should be able by now, yeah.
Edit:
Installation-Guide: github.com/joinloops/loops-server?tab=readme-ov-f…
Didnt host my own instance yet, but it looks like you could build your own.Would also make sense because its v1-beta release.
Looks like it

So… another year then?
Are there apps for this yet?

It’s an exciting world of file-to-object-to-file thunking. I’m surprised when it all works.
Cloudflare provides 10 GB of free (forever) S3 compatible storage too.
Yeah but why would I make myself dependent on Cloudflare.
Yes
Yeah, I wouldn’t bother implementing local storage if I could easily roll a local S3 in the docker-compose.yaml.
Any fellow kickstarters round these parts?? 👋
Elaborate:))

Android app update is the next thing. They are active on Discord.
Loops doesn’t have an algorithm, it just shows you the most recent videos uploaded to Loops. At least, in the For You tab anyways.
ahhh well. hopefully that changes to give a bit more usability. but thank you. good to know.
Bröther may I have some lööps?
