This might be the one to dethrone Mastodon in user count and monthly active user metrics.

Pixelfed’s time to shine. We all succeed with this one!

Hopefully the whisperings of Lemmy gets into the ears of folks.

Waiting for the resurrection of Reddit VS Instagram meme war as Lemmy VS Pixelfed

The cool thing is that it’s not like versus, it’s like co-op!

TheFederatedPipe@fedia.io on 17 Jan 01:32 collapse

It's a great opportunity for #pixelfed to add #group support, so those sharing their videos can share it directly to a community/magazine reaching to a wider audience. Same for #loops. Obviously, not at the moment, where everyone is trying to keep things up and running. @dansup

Casuallynoted@pawb.social on 17 Jan 14:12 next collapse

Pixelfed still has to fix really basic stuff first. Like pulling changed profile pics from remote instances, federating properly and consistently, not having three different UIs from different stages of development at once, making sure settings do what they’re supposed to do…

chramies@lemmy.world on 18 Jan 08:08 collapse

and free-text search, not just on hashtags and usernames.

Irelephant@lemm.ee on 17 Jan 23:25 collapse

They’re close to releasing it… for the last 9 months.

kat@orbi.camp on 16 Jan 17:00 collapse

Sad the dude behind it is kind of a Jerk. Was bullying a kid on Mastodon just a few weeks back and he got a bunch of backlash for it. Dude also got a bit of a Messiah complex, had to unfollow him 🥴

MyOpinion@lemm.ee on 16 Jan 17:05 next collapse

Please let’s not start the personal attacks on the developers. Lemmy was a shit storm of that and it really sucked when I joined. Take the gift of the software and move on.

sunzu2@thebrainbin.org on 16 Jan 17:19 next collapse

But people love the drama, it is provocative, it drives engagement

kat@orbi.camp on 17 Jan 21:37 collapse

I mean this is just dismissive. Taking a stand against bullying teenagers is not a provocative take. Jeez

possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip on 16 Jan 17:39 next collapse

Yeah there is something very ironic about commenting this on Lemmy

kat@orbi.camp on 16 Jan 18:00 collapse

I mean no shade at you, like morality is subjective. But Imma still do me, Im greedy like that when it comes to what I expect out of people.

Casuallynoted@pawb.social on 17 Jan 14:15 collapse

Yup. Been following Dan for a while and this has only gotten worse. Problem is, his attitude absolutely informs the way he manages and handles his projects. Even one glance at the issues page for Pixelfed shows that.

I think at some point, a lot of the Fedi will realise that toxicity and hopefully we’ll see fork efforts like Pixelfed-glitch get more support. Because Pixelfed and Loops are good ideas, executed by someone who really doesn’t have the ability to properly execute on them. I don’t anticipate that these current user numbers will stay given the current, quite broken, state of Pixelfed.

ThomasCrappersGhost@feddit.uk on 17 Jan 20:00 collapse

Pixelfed is great, but it needs developing…some pics don’t load, comments don’t comment, likes don’t like. I’d love it if this got fixed, dark mode got added, more users and other bits and pieces. Are you saying that this won’t happen then?

Also a shame to find out he’s a prick.

Casuallynoted@pawb.social on 17 Jan 22:03 collapse

It’s hard to say, but I’m not anticipating anything myself. Dude seems to be more interested in making flashy branded announcements than developing the thing to a working state.

What I will say is, he’s has for the last several years just under 400 Patreon backers (one of which was me), which was intended to give him funding to bring Pixelfed to a state of relative completion.

In that time he effectively abandoned Pixelfed to work on Loops (which is also in a really rough state and I anticipate will be similarly abandoned for Sup once he runs out of things to ‘announce’ for it), and now that Pixelfed has suddenly gotten this wave of attention, he’s talking about launching a Kickstarter to actually do the thing this time.

He has also been privately very hostile to groups such as the devs of Pixelfed-glitch, which were formed to continue development of Pixelfed, all while publicly stating that he is embracing it with open arms and sharing the development with that team.

He also responds to criticisms of these behaviours with posts like the ones I’ve attached here.

Hmmm. Seems like he’s one hell of a guy….I was tempted to offer some feedback but I don’t want to get accused of criticising. Thanks mate, we’ll see how it plays out, hey?

Casuallynoted@pawb.social on 17 Jan 22:28 collapse

Absolutely! I’m genuinely hoping for the best because I like the idea behind Pixelfed. 🤞

So wait, is it like using lemmy? I mean with choosing a server for your account. (Looks lke it, yes) Does it have a “front page” like lemmy? (It does)

Is it subject oriented, or person to person like twitter. (Person oriented, and tags for subjects)

Edit: Im editing in (my findings) while taking a looksee.

Edit. F it. i signed up.

Sibbo@sopuli.xyz on 16 Jan 17:29 collapse

It’s basically mastodon with a different front end. No fundamental differences.

TachyonTele@lemm.ee on 16 Jan 17:34 next collapse

That’s good to know thanks. I don’t use mastodon or anything like Twitter/Facebook.

ICastFist@programming.dev on 17 Jan 21:39 collapse

Can it cross federate? Or at least within pixel fed, how easy is it for instances to federate? I’ve found that mastodon requires at least one person from a different instance following you before your stuff federates there

On the top right is a user icon. Click that and then choose Global

That works for the browser, but not the app. Thank you!

TachyonTele@lemm.ee on 16 Jan 17:14 collapse

Ah, good to know. Thanks

breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca on 16 Jan 17:17 collapse

There isn’t, unfortunately. Global shows you all of the Fediverse, not just Pixelfed. A global pixelfed feed was a planned feature at one point but I’m not sure of its status.

For now, it’s really hard to find pixelfed users on other servers because they get drowned out by all the Mastodon traffic.

blackn1ght@feddit.uk on 16 Jan 19:27 next collapse

That’s weird, why would you want to see other fediverse content in Pixelfed? Surely it should be all Pixelfed content like op expects.

breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca on 16 Jan 19:43 next collapse

It just depends on how you want to use your account. I can see wanting to follow PeerTube or Loops accounts from Pixelfed. I follow a few Mastodon users who just post photos.

The default behaviour is to only show content with attached media but you can change that in settings too. So you can use it as a microblogging service if you just like the look and feel of Pixelfed.

Edit: striking out the falseness

baronvonj@lemmy.world on 17 Jan 00:54 collapse

Thanks for that deep dive! Glad to not be hallucinating.

Churbleyimyam@lemm.ee on 16 Jan 19:59 collapse

Lots of great artists are on Mastodon instances, like mastodon.art. Including their image posts means you can see some really good paintings.

Sergio@slrpnk.net on 17 Jan 04:49 collapse

Global shows you all of the Fediverse

Does it show Lemmy posts tho? It doesn’t seem to… Also it looks like it only shows image posts from Mastodon… (not criticizing it, just noting.)

breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca on 17 Jan 04:55 collapse

I’m not sure. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Lemmy post there, though I haven’t spent a ton of time on that TL. It might be different because all Lemmy posts are posted to groups which aren’t supported by Pixelfed yet. That’s just a guess though.

Sergio@slrpnk.net on 17 Jan 05:10 collapse

Yeah I don’t think pixelfed global supports Lemmy – I’ve seen a couple image posts on Lemmy in the past 10 minutes that didn’t show up on pixelfed global. So I guess they miss out on our memes and shitposts lel.

cm0002@lemmy.world on 16 Jan 16:47 next collapse

For those who want to know, Mastodon is first, Peertube is third and Lemmy is coming in at fourth place on MAUs

This goes to show that you do not need millions of people to have a good community.

spaduf@slrpnk.net on 17 Jan 21:06 collapse

The new app is pretty good (although still missing major features). That might have something to do with any recent growth.

Martineski@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 17 Jan 21:16 collapse

Oh, so they finally released it. I wonder about the ui redesign because the ui was bad to use from what I remember. Will read their updates now.

breadcat@sh.itjust.works on 17 Jan 18:00 collapse

I thought misskey was higher? maybe because people mostly use forks?

ICastFist@programming.dev on 17 Jan 21:32 collapse

Maybe it’s counted together with mastodon?

breadcat@sh.itjust.works on 17 Jan 23:09 collapse

it’s not, it’s separate on the list but I remember it being 2nd or 3rd at one point

Ulrich@feddit.org on 16 Jan 17:03 next collapse

Instagram was an inherently flawed platform. It was supposed to be for people to share artistic photos and portfolios but it was obviously abused for attention. People just post photos of text. This is the same. Limiting a platform to any specific type of media is dumb.

MyOpinion@lemm.ee on 16 Jan 19:03 next collapse

But for the fediverse it is a fantastic Trojan horse to get people to join us.

Churbleyimyam@lemm.ee on 16 Jan 20:04 collapse

Most posts on my instance’s local feed right now are from new accounts and 99% of them are photography and art. I saw one guy doing a typical poser selfie and just blocked him. It’s looking good.

I encourage people to report any spam that does get posted though. Need to keep Pixelfed nice.

Ulrich@feddit.org on 16 Jan 20:14 collapse

That’s on your local feed. Presumably you joined the fediverse to federate with other instances. And since PixelFed federates with all sorts of other platforms, and refuses to be Pixelfed-only, inevitably a large number of those photos are not even intended to be artistic but informational. Not to mention the inevitable future of a platform that becomes even remotely popular.

Churbleyimyam@lemm.ee on 17 Jan 22:17 collapse

I have no problem with that - on Pixelfed I can choose what to see. I agree though it would be a cool bonus to have a fourth option to see all Pixelfed posts.

That number has to be low. There’s been nearly 200k new signups in the last few days. Pixelfed’s blowing up right now. The local feed on p.s is a never-ending stream of first posts.

It’s the same as with Lemmy, you join a server and you see practically all of them.

baronvonj@lemmy.world on 17 Jan 00:39 collapse

Only insofar as the instance stays online. Pixel Fed is compatible with multiple other platforms such as Mastodon, Missley, Sharkey, and Fire fish. So the global feed on Pixel Fed shows you photo posts from users of all federated instances of those other platforms, too. And they can all see posts from federated Pixelfed instances.

I never tried PixelFed and just signed up to pixel.tchncs.de. As a client I downloaded Pixelix from F-Droid. Now I’m there with an empty feed. How do I get started?

There’s a section with trending profiles and one with trending hashtags but both sections seem to have pretty generic content like #art, #photography, #photos etc.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice photographies and all but it feels really anonymous and a bit random to me. Is this the normal PixelFed experience or am I doing it wrong?

I also don’t get it and would love some guidance
