Requires registration. Also, are there no other instances of it? Also also, what protocol does it use?

malfisya@piefed.social on 08 Jul 13:03 next collapse

It uses activitypub, the same as Pixelfed. It is the same creator afterall. AFAIK, it is not yet federated. It ask for registration because it is pretty much in open beta right now. No other fediverse alternatives for Tiktok except that.

Edit: more about them on the FAQ.

Dreaming_Novaling@lemmy.zip on 08 Jul 13:12 collapse

Loops is still in beta, so there’s no other instances yet, but it’s gonna use ActivityPub like everyone else does so it can federate with Pixelfed (and probs mastodon). Also, like 90% of Fediverse instances require registration, usually to prevent spam and other crazy shit (CSAM, literal gore, etc.) from being posted. Just gonna have to wait a bit.

rglullis@communick.news on 08 Jul 14:14 collapse

usually to prevent spam and other crazy shit

but a registration shouldn’t be needed if you just want to browse and scroll.

PhilipTheBucket@ponder.cat on 08 Jul 14:19 next collapse

That’s not how it works though.

I actually agree that registration is silly. It’s trivial to create fake email addresses; all it does is present obstacles and slight privacy implications for legitimate users, while forming an incredibly mild speedbump for malicious users. But, it’s probably not going away, every little tool in the toolbox that can be deployed by overworked volunteer admins against the unending tide of malicious users trying to make their lives more difficult is probably going to get deployed if it is easy to do.

rglullis@communick.news on 08 Jul 14:25 collapse

I am not sure I follow. How would a troll cause trouble to an instance by lurking on a site?

PhilipTheBucket@ponder.cat on 08 Jul 14:46 collapse

Oh, I thought you meant no email address required to make an account.

Just having to register in order to read the feed is probably just for server load reasons, if I had to guess.

Dreaming_Novaling@lemmy.zip on 08 Jul 15:43 collapse

Didn’t realize you just wanted to scroll. Yeah, almost no instance requires registration to scroll. Once again, I think Loops is just requiring registrations now because the project is unfinished, and probably can’t handle a large amount of users. They also need easy feedback from users.

rglullis@communick.news on 08 Jul 15:49 collapse

the project is unfinished

Understatement of the year. Dan has posted “loops next week” for more than an year already…

Dreaming_Novaling@lemmy.zip on 08 Jul 16:13 collapse

Yeah, definitely could be making faster improvements, and it’s disheartening considering Pixelfed hasn’t had major improvements either. But I’m not a coder, so other than the fact that I donated to the spring Kickstarter, I can’t complain much.

rglullis@communick.news on 08 Jul 17:51 collapse

It’s Dan’s whole M.O: he gets excited about some new project, goes on a rushed coding rampage, releases some alpha-quality code, then loses interest and starts the chase for the next shiny toy.

I don't get why loops requires registration. It feels like an instagram pattern and I really dislike it.

Banthex@feddit.org on 08 Jul 16:29 collapse

How does loops even work? I thought i can for example follow 3d printing but i can only follow user. Thats useless to me.

MxRemy@piefed.social on 08 Jul 13:00 next collapse

In addition to Loops, there was also Vidzy and Goldfish, but I don't think they still exist?

OpenStars@piefed.social on 08 Jul 13:01 next collapse

Not fully bc Loops does not quite federate yet. Check out !loops@midwest.social and as the note says, best viewed from a Tesseract UI, like in your case https://t.lemmy.dbzer0.com/c/loops@midwest.social .

But mostly people are waiting on Loops to catch up on its development to do more with it.

Edit: To clarify, you can view all of these without registration. Here is an example post of a Loops video: https://piefed.social/post/342104 and here is a Tesseract powered version on your instance https://t.lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/lemmy.dbzer0.com/31948457 .

I am waiting for the basic feature of searching videos with keywords

sakari@mastodon.world on 08 Jul 17:16 collapse

@OpenStars @darkguyman you can see videos from Mastodon, go to a Mastodon instance and search for `@dansup` (the Loops developer username on Loops)

OpenStars@piefed.social on 08 Jul 21:48 collapse

That's neat! Technically you can see videos from the Threadiverse as well but I'm guessing that whole process is streamlined in Mastodon, and I am not aware of any such short-form video communities here.

Unfortunately, videos on Lemmy auto-play, including those WITH SOUND!!:-(

Example:

Oh neat, PieFed still auto-plays but mutes the sound, I love PieFed so freaking much! 🥰

Edit: sorry I should have warned about the political-themed content of the video - it was just the easiest one to grab, unfortunately:-(.

Edit 2: you can also upload videos as well, here is an example of that:

Yes, this is Loops: “Loops is a short video sharing platform.”.

However, if I am correctly informed, the planned federation with the Fediverse has still not been realised.

Why " with no required registration"? Where can you simply share videos without any account?

Loops.

cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone on 08 Jul 14:51 next collapse

tiktok alternatives would suffer the same problem that shorts and loops do; they are content creator driven platforms so unless you incentivise content creators to move you just get reposts from other platforms or ai generated slop.

Loops, like everyone rightly said, but while this initially peaked my interest, at this point I’m a little skeptical about this project. Dev seems very keen to overhype and tease new features, but usually fails to deliver, like the webUI that was supposed to be days away last year but still doesn’t exist. For a fedi platform, not being able to access it via a browser on a desktop is the most bizarre thing to me. I’d hate for fediverse tech to follow this mobile-only trend.
