the more and more reddit increasing thier filters to ban or remove comments we will see more. it going to take permabans for people to come here in large numbers. sooner or later reddit is just a clone of FACEBOOK.
Correct. However with ActivityPub protocol those number are irrevalent : any increase of users from (Lemmy, Mbin, Piefed) will benefit Lemmy, Mbin, Piefed.
And to a certain extend, on Mbin and later Piefed, they will also reach microblogging plateform as iceshrimp and mastodon. Then pixelfed, peertube, loops...

I’m excited to see where software development is going to go. It seems like every major microblogging platform has a few different flavors and there are multiple platform choices available. What were using is just the beginning, the software can only ever get better really. It’s not like the corporate world where they make shit worse on purpose to make more money. And as the software gets better than use might increase as well since you can do more and do it easier and more elegantly
You should definitly try them. :)
- Mbin : you can connect to mastodon account, they support flair, filter by content type. I don't use it a lot but enjoy it.
- Piefed : a good moderation board, flair, multi-community (feed), peertube support...

Nice, I didn’t know fedecan hosted graphs like this. The fediverse.observer graph has a weird scale and Fedidb has also been weird lately, so this is a good alternative.
thats about the time when reddit was upping thier ban purges, my hunch is people who have lemmy mightve stop using temporarily to find out what was going on/repealing thier bans on reddit?
for a several days i dint immediately go to LEMMY after my permabans, but trying to find out the reason behind all these purges ? some people have multiple reddit accounts
I suspect the fediverse is stickier than mainstream social media, since there’s no incentive to be anti-consumer, and anyone can make their own frontend.

The thing is no one is actually forced to use their websites, we can all leave at any time when it’s no longer worth it. This means that we have all the power since those websites are nothing without their users and the content they post. You are also right that the diversity and quality of software offerings can only go up and we see this happen even with rather low user numbers. Imagine what the world could look like when corporations are unwelcome nuisances
Is there a mobile app yet? I made an account because I was interested in the new Feeds feature, but I spend 100% of my time on the Threadiverse using my phone.
No. However there are two mobile app in WIP :
- a fork of Thunder : Pferd. (only for testing and i love its logo)
- Interstellar, they want to support Piefed
I use daily Piefed as an app. The mobile website works well :
- you open https://piefed.social with your browser.
- Then click on add a shortcut and it will work as an app.

We’re not without our cons though, biggest problem we have are probably the Tankies (Authoritarian “communists” who will overlook any wrong doings of China, Russia, NK because they think their governments are the “gold standard”), but here they’re mostly on the Tankie Triad lemmy.ml, lemmygrad and hexbear. You have a .world account so you only have to worry about .ml, but on Lemmy you can do a personal instance wide block if you’d rather just not deal with them. Ah ok, so if authoritarian communism is the only form of communism that exists then eroding human rights ever further in the pursuit of it is A-OK then?
Sorry, I don’t subscribe to that, I personally would love to see the fall of capitalism in my lifetime, but not at the sacrifice of basic human rights like freedom of speech and inviting even worse censorship.
Hmm yes, century+ old books that predate the CCP coming into power by like 25 years and well before modern age concerns like the power of the internet could even be imagined

The old internet never went away, not on a technical level for sure. What changed is that big corporations had dominant positions from control over user bases and then they squeezed us for profits so hard that it’s no longer worth it to use them. This process seems to have accelerated since the end of the era of easy money in 2022 which is why we’re seeing things pop off more than it used to.

Shadowbanning sucks when your on the other side of it.
Forever mods that have hundreds of default subreddits act like dictators. Banning people from all their collections of subreddits without anyone knowing.
Removing the ability for users to see actual number of votes up/down.
And now with the whole "don't upvotes certain content or you will get a strike". Never mind that isn't how the site works at all.

Think about instances as email providers. You pick a provider (feddit.dk, feddit.uk, lemmy.wtf etc.) to access everything from all the other Lemmy providers + the rest of “the Fediverse”, which fx consists of Mastodon, PeerTube and Pixelfed.
Was it on Feddit.dk you had issues with slow emails? That might be something the admin, @SorteKanin@feddit.dk should look into.
What “boxes” are you talking about here, when signing up on a Lemmy provider?
Mastodon and Lemmy is different software, serving two different functions, but they are connected. So it is possible for a user on Mastodon to create and comment on posts from Mastodon, on Lemmy.
If you follow this link to Mastodon.social, you can see this post and our comments.
If it helps, you can check out PieFed.social - the topic areas are at the top, no need for an account until you have decided to become active with voting, comments, or posts, and in that case there's a sign-up wizard offering to subscribe you to topic areas of your choice, and put up keyword filtering for "Trump" or "Musk" or some such, to either see that content never, only a little, or not filter it at all.
Maybe you don't need all that anymore, perhaps you've already found an app that you like that does similarly (Sync or Connect?), but I thought I'd mention just in case:-).

I created an account a while back and I’m back after receiving a warning from reddit for upvoting certain content. I was going through the communities looking for stuff to subscribe to and I was a bit surprised by the number of communities with a couple thousand users and the last post being half a month or more out.
I hope people’s suggestions about making the instances and navigation more seamless is being taken seriously because there hasn’t been much change there from what I’m seeing.
Even though 50k is a nice number of MAUs and allows for active discussion in the bigger communities, it’s still not enough to fuel niche communities - at least presuming the 90-9-1 rule applies even to early adopters such as us. While I agree that discoverability could be a lot better, I think what’s holding back the smaller communities right now is lacking critical mass more than anything else.
A bunch of communities were created at the last Reddit exodus and left to die. Buuut some of the communities might have moved to another Lemmy server or simply died out because the same community exists on another Lemmy server.

Its ppl copying the content on each others servers and all hosting frontends/backends that serve the same content. The site is where your content is hosted, like if you upload a pic its to that instance and based on their upload rules for size. I think lemm.ee has like a 50mb limit while some have much higher limits. All of your posts/comments originate from your site and then get coppied to any site that hasnt blocked it and has communicated with it before. (Me subscribing to a lemmy.world community from my instance would count as communicating so they would federate and posts from that community and other communiteis on that instance would show up on mine in the future)
Like if you hosted a site that was an exact clone of mine that copied or linked content over everytime it was posted to match the other.
So, lemm.ee is a lemmy instance, its like its own mini-reddit. lemmy.world is another instance. You can follow communities accross instances though.
UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml
on 12 Mar 15:56

You can browse by “local” and “all” with the tab at the top of the page. Local is posts from just your instance, all is everything not defederated with your instance.
That’s why I suggest people go to a instance with as few deferations as possible. You can block instances, communities, and users. You know what you want to see. You don’t need a admin to tell you what you want to see.
I’m glad instances with tons of defederations exist for those who want that, but that’s not for me.
lemmy.ml is the instance run by the lemmy developers, who are tankies. Tankies are people who support authoritarian regeims such as the soviet union, or north korea.
As such, they sometimes remove anti-china or pro-ukraine posts/comments.
They also sometimes bridgade threads.
As an example, check !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works
I thought the whole point of Lemmy was that it didn’t matter what instance you joined. Can I move my account, or do I need to make a new one on a new instance?
So, the no matter what instance thing isn’t really true. Moderation is different per instance, mods can remove comments locally.
Account migration is planned, but not there yet.
Well it doesn’t, but that instance has a… reputation… So some people might have that entire instance blocked. You’d have to create a new account elsewhere to move over
Every instance has a reputation. A lot of .ml posters think that .world posters are libs and crypto fascists(if they distinguish between the two). And some folks accuse feddit.nl users of being… Well… Dutch.
I could have sworn I had a screenshot of it, but I’m still looking. But please enjoy this other one I grabbed of .world and .ee users being called bots in the meantime
I do apologize for the inconvenience, but for now I will have to leave you on a cliffhanger. After spending another 10 minutes looking I gave up, it’s out there though, I saw it with my own eyeballs.
Maybe I’ll write something that can do a better lemmy search or send my screenshots through OCR, but my project list atm is rather…long and has other more important things on it, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ so who knows lmao

Does shitjustworks have a rep? So far so chill, I don’t think I’ve heard any controversy about this one.
I’m a Marxist-Leninist, sure, whatever you want to call that. SJW is generally seen as right-wing for hosting some of the most pro-US and anti-communist communities, and having an admin that thinks China and Russia are pushing “gender politics” to radicalize western youths against the US. This is MAGA-tier conspiracy theory nonsense and undermines the real struggles faced by transgender people in order to push their own political agenda.
You yourself essentially just stir up drama and repost content from Lemmy.ml, which is kinda silly. Same with trying to make “Tankie Triad” a thing, Marxists occupy far too much of your time for someone who presumably isn’t a Marxist.
Being a Tankie doesn’t mean just being a communist, being a tankie is defined as "authoritarian communists, especially those who support acts of repression by such regimes, their allies, or deny the occurrence of the events thereof. "
You guys censor anybody who speaks against Russia/NK/or the CCP and it’s well documented. People catch 14 day bans for merely saying that Drump and NK dictators are “dumb” or saying “Fuck Russia” on a meme about Russia being pushed away from getting help from Trump by the French (iirc) PM (which also got removed) and it’s also hilarious your bring up the SJW admin when one of your own did the exact same thing.
SJW isn’t right-wing, that’s just what you say about everyone whose explicitly not a tankie
I could post ever more links about the .ml censorship problem but I think made my point
“Tankie” is a caricature. The idea of a tankie is the ideal vision of a McCarthyian Communist. In reality, the overwhelming majority of people labeled as such don’t actually fit that label, it’s more of a way to cast an image of someone’s positions based on, say, support for AES countries, and twist that into the evil Commie Pinko that haunts the dreams of 1960s children in the US.
Either way, Lemmy.ml has a higher standard when it comes to racism, ableism, homophobia, and other forms of chauvanism. Many people are critical of Russia, the DPRK, CPC, etc yet don’t get removed because they don’t break those rules. Moreover, I am not a representative of Lemmy.ml, I am no fan of Nutomic and have stated that before, transohobia is unacceptable no matter who does it.
As for MwoG, I have seen it, and I don’t really care for an anti-communist drama community polulated by stalkers, doxxers, and drama-baiters that take things out of context or fully stand by bigotry unironically (that’s where the transphobia from the SJW admin came from, you’ll notice).

using “jokes” to push conservatism is a common tactic of crypto-fascists as is warmongering shitposts like noncredibledefense or spreading 4chan greentexts, both of which are the top communities on SJW (intentionally chosen by the way) which combined with the transphobic admins creates a alt-right vibe on sh.itjust.works
I am quite far from being a conservative and I am well aware of what happened to r/TheDonald and I am trying to walk that fine line, I plan to lock the comm entirely if I feel like it’s shifting away from true satire.
Despite what Tankies think about me, I’m actually pretty far left, I would even love to see the fall of capitalism in my lifetime. Where we differ is the fact that I don’t consider swapping out capitalism with just another form of authoritarianism is the path forward whatsoever
That being said, I’ve seen your type of opinion before, and I simply don’t agree, a lot of people need a varying range of humor to deal with harsh realities, like with the fact that MaGA and other global alt-right movements appears to be “winning”

There’s a difference between support and pointing out blatant US propaganda. Like I said above, many people across the fediverse don’t get the nuance of being critical of US narratives does not equal supporting the regimes that are on the recieving end of that propaganda. If you really spent any amount of time on .ml you’d see there is plenty of criticism of Russia/China, just not to the extent where everyone unquestioningly takes any criticism by US sources at face value.
Did you open the link at all? That user literally just said that Drump would be the dumbest president ever, even dumber than NK dictators and caught a 14 day ban from /c/memes for it. That is not ban worthy whatsoever, but on .ml it is for the sole reason of it speaks ill of NK.

I’ve been on .ml for half a year and it’s a good one. Not many defederations, so I can pick what instances i want to see and not have some faceless admin pick for me.
If you really struggle with certain users who are passionate about certain topics, just block them. This is true for any instance. Don’t forget to block me to. Thanks.
Don’t worry about the other posters trying to dissuade you from lemmy.ml. It’s a very chill instance. It gets flack because it is run by and has a majority leftist base, but that shouldn’t be an issue if you consider yourself a progressive. The “tankie” slurs are frankly b.s. and disingenuous. I wouldn’t call the sub “pro-Russia/China” by any means, the users are anti-imperialist and realistic in the nature of US propaganda depicting other states as bogeymen. Just because you question the mainstream US-centric narrative doesn’t mean you’re shilling for China/Russia etc. There’s a lot of liberals and centrists, that despite their progressive sentiments they may hold, are still very beholden to the narrative of American exceptionalism in a lot of ways.

Trying to shore up against .ml brigading, before I was instance-banned so .ml users couldn’t see my posts n stuff. Then 2 months later, totally not coinciding with a recent meme I posted, davel was so kind as to fix that and only manually ban me from .ml comms individually so that .ml users could see and brigade my posts and comments again
I’m new myself, thanks for the recommendations. While you’re at it, do you happen to know of any good political/religion debate … subs? what are they called here? I’m going to call them subs for now. Maybe some Anarchist and non-tankie Communist subs?
The equivalent to a Reddit "sub" is a Threadiverse "community" (Threadiverse or Forumverse, or maybe just Verse now?, anyway meaning the subset of the wider Fediverse, so like the latter includes Mastodon but the former is only the community-based Lemmy, Mbin, and PieFed).
The anarchy & communism instances are slrpnk.net and lemmy.dbzer0.com. Beware the fake communism, "tankie" triad of hexbear.net (or wherever they moved to, after they forgot to renew their own domain name), lemmygrad.ml, and lemmy.ml. Actually the former 2 should be defederated from you on Lemmy.world already, while the latter is sometimes okay, yet also batshit insane at the same time. You'll see... and if you ever forget to follow one of their entirely unwritten rules (not kidding), you'll be banned from every community on the entire instance, including those you've never even heard of.
Beware the fake communism, “tankie” triad of hexbear.net (or wherever they moved to, after they forgot to renew their own domain name)
they managed to keep the domain in the end, I think they transferred to a different DNS landlord
Also it’s not fake communism, it’s pretty normal for anyone outside of terminally online circles, like I’m active in anarchist organizing and I’ve had plenty of comrades who would get called a tankie by you lot like it’s some thoughtcrime
You only need the one account, you don’t need to sign into other instances.
There can be some weirdness on the web version where if someone uses the wrong type of link then you maybe redirected away and can’t interact as you’re not logged in.
The admins have a long history of banning people across the entire instance who are critical of China, North Korea, Cuba etc. That said, you should be fine and if you’re happy with the instance then there’s no reason to move. Some users like to make a bigger deal out if it than it really is.
The “ml” in the domain is supposed to represent “Marxist Lennist” which the ideology the instance is aimed at.
you’re not going to get banned for saying that, I would even agree. people get banned for being racist/chauvinist and then run off to cry about evil authoritarian censorship
So let me get this straight, we can’t call Drump “the dumbest president of all time” otherwise it’s abelist, is that right? LMAOOO you guys are hilarious sometimes lol 😂
The admins and mods of .ml are huge Tankies and censor all content critical of China/Russia/NK and will deny they’re even dictatorships let alone that they enforce censorship or any other violation of basic human rights
!meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works has a bunch of content documenting what they get up to that you might miss if you’re not in the modlog, but ironically for a group that complains about censorship they block that comm from all .ml users at the instance level so you’ll have to look at it in a roundabout way.
lemmy.world/c/meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works should work
Haha yea! That one sentence probably would have got you banned if you said it on a .ml comm
If you don’t want to deal with them, lemmy.cafe is one instance that defed’s from the entire triad (Hexbear.net and lemmygrad are the other 2 major Tankie instances, but they’re even worse than .ml, so most instances defed from them including .world)
If you don’t mind fighting against them though .world, .ee and the excellently named sh.itjust.works all fed with .ml, but not the other 2
They defed with Hex and Grad, I think they’re partially defed’d with .ml they seem to defed some of .ml’s subdomains but not the main .ml domain
In general .ca is an excellent instance for Canadians, especially if you’re looking to support Canadians, it’s all hosted in Canada with Canadian business

Sounds like some very positive changes in your life. Glad to hear that you’ve been improving yourself.
My wife and I recently had to make a difficult but necessary change in our own lives, fleeing from the US to live in France while we wait to see what shakes out of the chaotic situation there over the course of the next year. Been starting in on the language learning, but it’s been slow going.

How was that process? Is your wife French? I wish I had dual citizenship anywhere.
It was not as big a deal as you might think. In order to get a visa that we can renew each year, we basically had to prove these things:
-We have valid passports and identities
-We are not going to take a French person’s job
-We have health insurance (so that we don’t end up stiffing the French healthcare system)
-We won’t be homeless on arrival in France
-We have enough savings to support ourselves for the time of our Visa’s validity (because we’re not allowed to work for a French based company while we’re here, see second point)
I’ve been saving 50+% of my gross pay for the whole time I was working, and my wife is doing the same, so we had plenty of money available to buy plane tickets, pay lawyers to advise us, buy health insurance, and get help with the application process. Honestly, the lawyers were not needed and we’re very expensive I would not use lawyer again. I used them because we needed to get out fast and I wanted to make sure that the first application would be successful. The instructions on the website for the French government were clear and straightforward and we could have done the application ourselves without major difficulty. There were even versions of the application forms available in English with checklists of documents to bring.
My wife is not French, but my mother, my stepfather, and my three step-siblings are. Unfortunately my mother naturalized here after I could have gotten French citizenship through her (I was 23 when she became a French citizen).

If you’re not daily driving Arch, btw, did you even join Lemmy?
I know you’re not daily driving Arch because you didn’t mention it.
For sure. There can also be a problem of too little moderation, though. There is a balance to be struck between censorship of opposing views and getting rid of off-topic spam.
For instance, there were a few regional subreddits that were obviously intended to be for thing like “Which restaurants are worth a 30 minute drive to go to” and “Come to my band’s concert at the waterfront this weekend”, but had turned into basically nothing but off-topic spam wars about national level political topics.
The mods refused to do anything about it, so I just left because 90+% of the content was stuff I didn’t come to that subreddit to read. Keep that shit on r/politics.
(unfortunately, that's just human nature, but there are a variety of ways in which things can become better here - e.g. the ability to create a new community on another instance, and then certain apps and PieFed, though not Lemmy yet, offers the ability to combine all of those communities into a single Topic, called a "Feed", see recent post about this)
I just arrived today myself, after being temp-banned for 7 days for some bullshit reasons that the appeal team agreed were bullshit so they unbanned me, but not before someone else perma-banned me for violating the rules on ‘my other accounts’ – I’ve had a single reddit account for the entire 14 years I’ve been there, I don’t even make throwaways, so, even more bullshit. I appealed that one too, but even if it’s overturned I’m not sure I’m going back. They’ve gotten real fucking fashy all of a sudden with the censorship, banning people for upvoting shit and calling it ‘inciting violence.’ Fuck 'em.
i heard about that situation, some people were getting temp banned, and then when the ban was lifted, they were permabanned. I think some mods mentioned reddit, or the sub does not reset thier filters once the bans was lifted so the filters automatically assume you are EVADING A ban.
The message about my perma-ban was actually 11 hours older than the message about my temp-ban being lifted, so they perma-banned me and then un-temp-banned me, which is… kinda fucky.
thier filters are so haphazardly banning people, not even verify a violation, thats what im seeing. i just deleted all my perma-banned accts, its pretty hard to repeal once they give a permaban that doesnt state where and what the violation was.
What’s hilarious is that my perma-ban got lifted on appeal, I can post and shit now, but the message they sent me said it was denied and would stay in place. They are so goddamnned confused over there.

Yep and when you’re perma banned you’re fucked. They don’t look at the reasons, they don’t engage with people… it’s ridiculous
i dont even bother commenting on niche, unless i know the sub isnt well moderated or the filters dont care about your comment. many subs currently are on very high, so even if you get a comment removed your account will be flagged but not banned, apparently they keep track of each comment that gets removed and may consider the account spamming.

I went through a phase where I would find good posts on reddit and then just copy the link and post here… but as of now, reddit is like 95% anti-Trump posts so it’s all noise. Lemmy is fairly noisy with that lately too but not as bad. I need to figure out a better way to filter out politics because it’s ruining online discussion even in non-political threads, somehow it devolves into “orange man bad” somehow at some point and it’s just tiresome going over the same topic over and over with the same talking points. Musk nazi, orange man bad… when you see it 50000000000 times it just gets old after a while, with RES I am able to filter out subs which helps immensely but I don’t think that’s possible here. But like r/pics, r/interestingasfuck, r/lotr, r/lego, r/technology, r/news, many many others… 90% political now, so the majority of the site is useless to me now. And it feels like it’s majority bots now, probably LLM-generated discussion through an API, dead internet theory is in full speed ahead mode.
its also hard to chime in agreement with those post without someone misconstrueing your statement about anti-trump and getting reported too. i had to filter out some posts/or ignore because the amount of TRUMP news, pro or anti. in R/ALL i filter alot of subs that way.

Yep. I HATE Trump and Musk but for the love of God, keep politics in the relevant subs! Also ACCEPT DIFFERENCE OF OPINION. I go reddit to switch off from politics but even r/OutOfTheLoop is now all people spreading their political messages. Its so hostile to other views now.
I don't think it's possible in Lemmy, unless you use an app (might not be FOSS though?) that adds that functionality. I'm not sure which ones though - maybe check out Sync or Connect?
PieFed can do it innately, in multiple ways. First, in the new user wizard (or in your account anytime later) you can specify that you want to see posts mentioning "Trump" or "Musk" either never, a little, or have no filtering.
Second, in addition to the standard Subscribed and All feeds, PieFed offers categories of communities, like Reddit's multi-reddit feature, so e.g. Arts & Crafts has no politics within it, though ofc News & Politics has nothing but:-D. The beauty of that is that with those, you could e.g. decide to not subscribe to any News or Politics communities, so that your Subscribed feed is empty of it, and yet still read the news as often as you like at the touch of a button. Those Feeds just became user customizable and shareable too.
The only other way to do that on Lemmy is to make a new account for every type of collection that you want, and then subscribe to the communities that you want each one to have. Which would get super annoying, super quickly:-).

I think the mainstream isn’t quite ready for the fediverse yet, I see people complaining about not knowing which instance to sign up for and how it works on reddit here and there. I just got a 7-day site-wide suspension because I guess I said something the admins didn’t agree with (didn’t violate any ToS, they just see something they don’t like and banhammer.) This is why decentralization is the key to the future, reddit admins/mods are psychotic power hungry assholes 99% of the time it seems.
Tbf that happens here too, whereupon you hop over to another instance and use a different community, and it's mostly the same (except that one community, which is why we have so many copies of each one).
Literally seems like 1/4 the comments of Reddit, 1/1000 the userbase. I think between API lockdown and “violence” banning, the entire commenting community of Reddit came here lol.
when they allow so much astroturfing from the right, and anything remotely try to use a neutral word to describe a controversial ones, eg demographic instead of the POC actual race, will get you banned.
Unfortunately (?) on Reddit a lot of the comments are from bots - not even just the "everyone I do not agree with must be a bot" mantra but demonstrably as in it is word for word repeated from a duplicate post made often years in the past, presumably resurrected to increase "engagement" and therefore profits.
^THIS. And my ax. I also choose this guy's wife! => all counts as "engagement" from the perspective of an advertiser.
And the humans are toxic AF. I resolved to leave Reddit regardless of whether I came here or not, bc I didn't like what all that argumentation was turning me into. Conversations are just flat better here.
Truthfully I miss some of the toxicity 😁 it’s so, so easy to win arguments with random strangers, so much wrong stupidity. I know some of them are not real. Yes lol this is much healthier.
To fill that niche, there's always Hexbear, or diluted 1000-fold, the still Alt-Left lemmy.ml instance.
I don't begrudge someone being "stupid" or ignorant, I begrudge them being obstinate and willfully remaining that way, especially when it crosses over into taking away my own freedoms.

Been checking and commenting on Lemmy everyday since I made my account. Its my new first opened app of the day now
Especially PieFed, with its onboarding wizard asking the user what topic areas they are interested in, and then subscribing to relevant communities. Also it asks how often someone wants to hear about Musk or Trump - never, a little, or no filtering. And then the categories of communities, which are now user-customizable and shareable, further aid discovery. Plus (omg it really does just keep going!) PieFed now knows about all communities on all instances, regardless of whether anyone on the PieFed instance has ever subscribed to it or not.

This is my first time here. I do not abide thought policing. Fuck Reddit, fuck Spez.
its thier OVERPOLICING that was the problem, it wouldve been fine if all they did was ban actual BOTS, you know the propaganda ones, but nope they went after everyone more aggresively than they did the above mentioned bots.
That’s fair, I didn’t think through my joke very well lol. Honestly Lemmy is wonderful but let’s face it it’s kinda an eco chamber with a few trolls, so I guess it would be kinda like the fake Good Place 😅
Or one with the broadest possible federation like lemmy.sdf.org, though they are US based if that’s a problem for you.
SDF does not defederate. The blocklist is empty. And it’s small enough and chill enough that it’s unlikely to get blocked by other instances much.
They’re a non-profit that’s older than the web and offers a variety of network and retrocomputing services including most famously a public access Unix server. They started as a dialup anime BBS.
They federate with everyone, including the insufferable right wingers, the insufferable tankies, and the people who draw loli (I think there’s only one lemmy instance still active that allows loli and it’s the radqueer one, and it’s tiny enough you don’t notice it unless you go looking for it). Most of the insufferable right wingers have also closed their respective instances.
If their mastodon instance is any comparison, it still federate with everyone including the instances that post loli. I suspect if an instance were posting stuff illegal in the US that would be grounds for SDF to defederate for legal reasons, but 1A protections are broader than speech protections in most of the rest of the world.
You can always block the community or even the entire instance of anyone you don’t want to see.
Me too, fck reddit, it’s no longer a board for broad discussions from all view points but instead an echo chamber of moderators curating their own narrative.
Where have you been the last DECADE?
The regime intervened from the time Reddit exploded and it became a too important medium to let exist uncontrolled. www.mintpressnews.com/…/277639/
Same as they did before: mronline.org/…/meet-the-ex-cia-agents-deciding-fa…
Looks like lot of people are mad bcs now also their other side of the US regime is being targeted.
Not a peep from them when Reddit furiously removed and banned mild criticism of the Palestinian genocide, same for other topics.
I have a lot of questions about the f people complaining now.

If you think about it, what would be the punishment for someone that killed thousands of innocent people in the US? I guess it would be a death sentence. So the person that killed that CEO did exactly the job a non compromised US federal estate had to do.

Insanity. You’re telling yourself that the groups which prides itself on hate are more receptive to you than groups which promotes cooperation and understanding? Maybe ask a psychiatrist what that says about you. You’re supposed to be tolerant to people who act in good faith, but nobody must be tolerant to hate.
The right is full of infighting too, but it’s about who is the most devoted to the dear leader. Challenge their arguments openly and you’ll see them act far worse than any leftist you’ve ever seen.

Sure, conservatives are allowed to criticize their godhead - that gives the appearance of a free speech zone. But they sure are the only ones that can without being banned, and it doesn’t matter if they do because they will never not vote for the traitor.
Reddit admins are insanely biased towards right wingers. They talk about the same free speech bullshit while only allowing one side to speak freely.
They tolerated brigades organized by them for years despite brigades being prohibited, they allowed T_D to absolutely dominate the front page by vote manipulation until a huge majority of the site got too outraged (that’s when the 2 post cap/day per sub was set, along with ignoring votes on pinned posts). T_D screamed and screamed and screamed about being censored when that happened (nothing was even removed), and everybody else was happy reddit FINALLY AFTER YEARS did something, anything, to make the site a bit more usable again. Tons of left leaning subs were banned long before they ever touched any far right extremism.
The left wing bias you might have seen comes from moderators who actually have expertise on their subjects (like science subreddits), not from the admins
FYI Lemmy is more like 99.98% leftist. There are next to no conservatives here at all, and centrists as usual mostly seem more quiet than extremists, leading to a more apparent leftwing swing.

That’s unfortunate, hopefully more instances with more centrist views pop up eventually, I might have to make the first of many. The irony is that the extreme lefties online think that centrists are extreme-right-wing somehow. Boggles the mind.
That would be great! Avoidance of not just leftists but extremists of any persuasion is the chief reason cited by so very many people for refusing to come over to Lemmy. Which by turning away content creators, leaves Lemmy stagnanting.
Nobody wants this place to turn into a safe haven for the Alt-Right, yet for some reason so many people do not bat an eye at what I've started calling the Alt-Left here.
It really would be great though to be able to check in on politics as needed, but then for one brief period even if only for ten damn minutes be able to turn all of that OFF!:-) Which I can on PieFed, but I see so many people on Lemmy begging for that, not knowing how to accomplish that (bc on Lemmy, you can't, and even on PieFed - well... look at this very post here, no separator is ever going to be perfect:-).
Tbf, from the perspective of someone who is THAT far left, I'm sure it does sorta all blend in to look the same:-). Even so, that is no excuse to remain in willfull ignorance. I don't have to agree with any particular position to understand it, nor to respect either it or the people who believe in it (especially if their set of facts differ from mine - not everyone has the luxury of sorting all of that out, at any age and social status and time period in their personal life).
I've flat given up posting content such as Fareed Zakaria, and barely bother to post highly leftist but somehow still not leftist enough content such as Innuendo Studios' The Alt Right Playbook.

It’s unfortunate to witness in my own community. But this is where the leftist extremists tend to huddle together it seems.
I am sure that the really real extremists are elsewhere, not here where everything is visible on the clear and open web. Similar for the left and right side, as well as other types too (e.g. climate). But in general this place does skew more towards leftism, when politics are discussed. That’s really good to see. But it will be far more interesting to see what the numbers are a month and longer are from now. If they don’t stick, it’s pretty meaningless.
They won’t all stick. That’s just the nature of things, no site/game/service/what-have-you boasts a 100% retention rate. Hell, not even heroin does. But with every MAU bump, some amount of them do stick around, and with every such increase to the baseline MAUs we get closer to critical mass.
That’s true. But it’s the numbers that will really tell the story if lemm.ee grows and how it grows. That’s why it’s far more telling in the months ahead and not some random single day.

They were doing surveys with the mods to see if they could tell between real and bot posts. I half wonder if it’s by design and they seed their own bullshit with llms. That is my tiny tinfoil hat for the day. I do the surveys and feed them bad data then tell them they suck in the comments and they somehow have not banned me yet from them lol.
I run a cryptography forum on reddit (now here too). On reddit it’s /r/crypto. Before the random suggested usernames every spam operation had to make up their own random username scheme. They ended up being mostly distinguishable because they used patterns normal people didn’t. Now? A ton of users with limited activity are now indistinguishable from bots. So the subreddit has to be in restricted mode so only approved users can post, and for anybody with ambiguous post history I have to send them a request for more detail to be able to keep spammers out while still allowing genuine newbies to join to ask questions. Otherwise the spam volume just ends up being way too intense.
This is smart. I would take that advice, but right now my subs are in maintence mode as a form of slactivism. I don’t post I just check in to delete a spam bot every few days.
Poison pill enagement and to steal content. Also trying to protect others from misinformation as some of the subs I have, in theory, could be weaponised by monied interests. :) We do what we can.

I had to switch instances 3 times before I found one I was okay with.
It looks like a lot of the new accounts are on Lemmy.World (PieFed shows an icon next to usernames when the account is <2 weeks old:-), so I expect sometime in the next six months to see them move to another instance. Like Discuss.Online if in the USA or feddit.org if in the EU, etc.
One of my largest pain points with Lemmy is that there are multiple active communities for the same topic, causing quite a few duplicate posts to show up in my feed that is difficult to filter. Hopefully there comes some kind of solution, outside of userbase, this is (what I believe) one of the larger issues compared to Reddit.
However, I still switched over to Lemmy for my primary ‘Reddit’-needs.
It helps to see communities as categories for an instance, each instance will have a different response to the same post based on the general instance vibe and culture. That’s also why picking a good instance to browse locally can be pretty useful.
I like that view, and it made me think of a possible “implementation”/“fix” as well:
Combine the post somehow (Based on attachment/title/something else?)
Filter/categorize the comments by instance that the comment was originally posted towards (Not by user, as that would be awful)
The largest issue here that I can see, how do we treat “new” comments to a post?
My annoyance is primarily with the fact that I see the same image 3x in a row, on a fairly regular basis. I might unsub from a few communities that share the same content.
There are many different workarounds, I personally don’t put much stock into sorting by “all” generally, sorting locally tends to be a better experience and has less repetition.
You can pseudo-curate by only subscribing to your most prefered instance of comm, but you won’t be able to see instances with allow-lists as the basis, rather than block-lists.
Lemmy does not offer that, unless you are using an app that does it (I don't know which ones).
PieFed though just added user customizable "Feeds" that allow you to join together whatever communities you want, and then share that collection with everyone. Recent discussion about it.
There isn't an official app for PieFed (although API testing is underway using Thunder, and iirc Interstellar also wants to add support for it), so it's just accessed through a web browser.

One of the problems with the way federation currently works is if I block US politics on one instance, I still get it en masse from other instances.
Before activity pub, all that duplication of threads would’ve been handled by moderators merging them together. Actually, it wouldn’t even have been so necessary since userscan see the existing thread and just post underneath that.
When blocking a community, we really need a check box to allow us to block the same community on all instances.
Lemmy unfortunately requires enormous efforts to curate your feed - sometimes you can block a single user (or 2-3) and thereby salvage an entire community. Other times the community itself just isn't worth it, ofc the trick then is to try to find other communities that can take their place, despite them having 1/1000th the number of subscribers.:-( Lastly, blocking some instances can immediately improve your experiences on the Fediverse by like 99%, or rather it would if the "instance blocking" were to do as advertised and actually block an instance, instead of just muting communities on it (but leaving users free to comment in other communities from other instances).
None of which is explained anywhere that you are provided ready access to, and then whenever someone tries there is inevitably the huge pushback as people cry out that you don't agree 100% with them and therefore should not be free to say anything at all, apparently.
PieFed solves roughly 90% of this, for me, e.g. check out the categories of communities feature, which just recently became user customizable and also shareable Feeds. Like Arts & Crafts will have the expected type of posts, with News & Politics equally easy to reach if you did want to check it out. Which means that you can have your cake and eat it too, by not actually subscribing to communities with political content in them, yet still see that when you want.
Also, the instance block here actually blocks users from an instance, without requiring admin approval to do a full defederation as Lemmy does. I cannot emphasize enough how blissfully wonderful it was to block lemmy.ml and see not one single BoTh SiDeS sAmE post after that, just prior to the USA election when those Alt-Left messages were being put out in full force.
On the bright side, Reddit is virtually impossible to get working in a halfway decent manner these days, whereas with some efforts (tiny with PieFed, A LOT with Lemmy) this place can be outright cool 😎.

Well now I feel old. Thanks 😮💨
It’s not like you mentioned Plastic and Fark.com. It’s not like you mentioned Usenet!
And judging by your username you found a great instance to call home as well! Welcome, let us know if you need anything. Since there is no recommendation algorithm here I suggest subscribing to !trendingcommunities@feddit.nl and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca to help find new communities to subscribe to.

I just really wish there was more active communities for things I like.
I made the Path of Exile community which is currently empty.
There’s no Burning Man community yet for SOME UNKNOWN REASON
All the EDM communities are dead including the one I made.
Did you make content for the Path of Exile and EDM community?
I also think more general communities (gaming, music) are what we need now, then later given enough growth, they will break into more specialized ones.
Without a critical mass of people, niche communities tend to have very few posts and comments. I wish there were more general communities like the early days of reddit instead of going straight into hundreds of dead communities.

I love the critical mass metaphor for Lemmy. Posts and comments are the neutrons that knock free other posts and comments after reaching other people. If we spread out our fissile material into hundreds of tiny pails, then the neutrons just fly away into the air without having any effect.
Make sure to promote your new communities at !newcommunities@lemmy.world and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca - Lemmy doesn’t have an algorithm so getting off the ground will take some effort. Beware that we’re still at below critical mass for easy sustaining of niche communities, so if you desire for one you will probably have to be the one doing the majority of the posting yourself for a while.
I just deleted my 12yo account over the censorship. Reddit has become a draconian shit hole and I no longer want to be a part of it. I’m happy to be here.
Same with me. Deleted my 13-year-old account and finally joined Lemmy yesterday. I actually found an app that looks a whole lot like Relay for Reddit back in the day. So now I’m totally comfortable here.

I’m one of the new users. Hi. Reddit suspended my account after I posted my indie game. No reply to my appeals for 3+ months. Gonna give Lemmy a try now

Happy to be here! I’m looking forward to my new home in Lemmy!
You have a Reddit.org account so iirc you only need to worry about .ml, but on Lemmy you can do a personal instance wide block if you’d rather just not deal with them. If you want to see what they get up to from a safe distance check !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works
You would warn newcomers about the Tankie Triad too if you had repeatedly seen all the stories of “I tried Lemmy, but it just seemed like a bunch of tankies, turns out it was just because I was on .ml when I tried it again”
There’s tons more that never came back and go on life thinking Lemmy is Voat 2.0. I know this because there’s plenty of comments on Reddit whenever Lemmy comes up about “it’s just Tankies over there”
Yes, how dare I try to protect Lemmy’s rep, I don’t want to see this place become Voat 2.0
Ah I get it now, you’re most likely a .ml alt account, so goodbye!
Tankie definition: "authoritarian communists, especially those who support acts of repression by such regimes, their allies, or deny the occurrence of the events thereof.

This graph doesn’t make sense to me. The drops on the two graphs shouldn’t line up, right? Make me sus
That’s when hexbear.net (part of the tankie triad) went offline because their domain expired and the domain admin was MIA. Unfortunately, they were able to reclaim it, so the graph should correct back when they start federating again

But they were still users who were active in that half-year, so even when they went offline it shouldn’t have resulted in a dip
Hopefully theres more growth in the next days and weeks. I’m absolutely hooked to migrate from reddit to lemmy, it just feels a little lonely here for now. When the time comes, my reddit is gone…
Lemmy is the only federated service I actually enjoy using. Just missing being able to block an entire @something instead of having to block every single community of it
and no I do not want to “choose another host that does block it”, it should be a user choice.
If you use an app it may or may not handle it properly or at all, but from the website you should be able to go-to feddit.nl/settings and the block tab and then you’ll have the ability to block users, comms or whole instances from there
I say it’s more of a mute because those users can still interact with your posts/comments (up/down vote, comment on) you just won’t see it. It’s been a highly discussed problem

2025 is the year of the Lemmyverse!
The more people that transition over here the better it’ll be (outside of some of some subs). I’m hopeful to see more community engagement.
the more and more reddit increasing thier filters to ban or remove comments we will see more. it going to take permabans for people to come here in large numbers. sooner or later reddit is just a clone of FACEBOOK.
*threadiverse, we don’t want to exclude other software
True, but this graph only shows Lemmy users, right?
Yeah
Do you mean every major social media platform?
I haven’t seen any lemmy forks yet
They’re not forks, but we have piefed and mbin (fork of kbin) and a couple more that have shut down
You should definitly try them. :)
- Mbin : you can connect to mastodon account, they support flair, filter by content type. I don't use it a lot but enjoy it.
- Piefed : a good moderation board, flair, multi-community (feed), peertube support...
What happened around the middle of February that caused that slight but sharp drop-off?
Hexbear going down, !fediverselore@lemmy.ca
Ahh okay. Thanks.
A slightly different graph from Fedecan shows the user growth more clearly without the Hexbear blip
Highest daily growth since 2023 at 1.2k per day the past few days.

Nice, I didn’t know fedecan hosted graphs like this. The fediverse.observer graph has a weird scale and Fedidb has also been weird lately, so this is a good alternative.
i wonder if those jumps are due to Reddits ban waves?
For the story, if i recall correctly, part of hexbear admins were aways so they got a paiement problem.
Their domain reseller put a bid for hexbear.net domain. It skyrocketed to 2500$. I'm glad they didn't have to pay those corpothieve.
thats about the time when reddit was upping thier ban purges, my hunch is people who have lemmy mightve stop using temporarily to find out what was going on/repealing thier bans on reddit?
for a several days i dint immediately go to LEMMY after my permabans, but trying to find out the reason behind all these purges ? some people have multiple reddit accounts
2025 is also the year of Piefed. :)
The year of PielemmbinBB
Year of the Verse
Nice word, i tried to find a similar word to microblogging (masto/IceShrimp) Sadly, threads was already taken, and i do want to promote Meta.
So, Verse as competitive, verse as poem, verse as conversation...i think it fit lemmy/mbin/nodeBB/piefed perfectly :)
The entire fedi is going up with new users. We keep having wins.
Kinda easy when traditional keeps hitting itself over and over.
I suspect the fediverse is stickier than mainstream social media, since there’s no incentive to be anti-consumer, and anyone can make their own frontend.
It’s only a matter of time until these companies keep making unforced errors and people join us.
Our year comrades.
Joined up yesterday and have been pretty happy so far. Have been looking for an alternative so i could ditch reddit since the API changes and had no idea this place existed until i saw a random thread yesterday
Welcome!
Welcome!
If you’re new, I definitely recommend checking out lemmyverse.net/communities for finding new communities to subscribe to, rather than just browsing “all”. There are a lot of weird communities out there when you just browse “all”…
sub.rehab is also good.
Sub.rehab is super outdated and fediverser.network is easier and crowdsourced.
Thanks, hadn’t seen that one before
Block the weird communities if you dislike them so much.

Welcome!
There's a ton of good apps that use the API.
Welcome! It’s a great, homely place that still feels a little bit like the old internet.
In addition to the already mentioned Lemmyverse, two other great ways of finding active communities are !communitypromo@lemmy.ca and !trendingcommunities@feddit.nl
Yes! I miss it.
People getting sick and tide of Reddit. TBH I’m still salty over them killing 3rd party apps and I’m so glad they did because that drew the line for me, also fuck spez.
Same, it was over for me when they took Boost away thankfully Boost pivoted to Lemmy lol
Boost gang!
Is Boost dead though? I love it too, but it hasn’t updated in a while
I have no idea, Boost has always been one to go long periods between updates, but it is getting pretty long since the last one
God I really hope its not dead. I know everyone suggests voyager but I don’t like the gestures and it feels slower than just having buttons.
I’m using Thunder and really enjoying it
Ill check it out. Thank you.
Does it save your position in the comments of a specific post? That’s my #1 criterion for an app. Boost is the only one that I’ve found that does it
Like if you visit a link or go to someone’s profile, then go back to return to the comments, will your scroll position be remembered so you can see the comment you were just looking at? If so, yes
Nice. What about if you back out to the main feed and then decide to go back to the comments later? This is where all other clients fail in my experience
Ah, no it does not do that
Not that I can see
You can have gestures disabled on voyager and just use the buttons
I use voyager and don’t use any gestures. Looks like I turned them off in settings. And they have a ton of options for things you can adjust in the settings. I was a reddit is fun app user and am completely happy with voyager. But I’m also almost always just lurking. So more active users might have more problems but with how much you can adjust it I doubt it.
Mine stopped working completely this week. It then linked to boost for lemmy. Now I’m here.
They’ve basically banned anonymous accounts. Their whole thing was anonymity.
Wait first I’m hearing of this one. What happened now?
I think they’re referring to the fact that you no longer can create accounts without using an email address. You were able to use a UI loophole to do it before via Old Reddit, but no more.
Woah, it’s finally gone? Guess I haven’t been back in a while
They seem to be blocking access from certain IPs and VPNs (if not logged in?) Which is funny because some of these VPNs are not really hiding anything. Like my work VPN which I would think makes it pretty obvious which company I work for. Annoying when search results link to reddit content.
You can use this script with a browser addon like Tampermonkey to get around the sign-in requirement:
Why should the user have to fix reddit to make it functional?
This what infuriates me the most.
I use a VPN (because my government is insane) and i get a “security warning” if I visit any Reddit post (even old Reddit).
All they’re doing is building a moat around OUR content we created.
Without anonymity it is in fact pointless. Pseudo anonymity is extremely useful I basically won’t go anywhere without it. That’s definitely a feature we should advertise to people, you can actually be anonymous
Reddit has become very strange.
They haven't come out with a feature that people have wanted in the last couple of years.
Getting rid of coins/rewards just to empty everyone’s stock and then bringing them back again without 1:1 compensation and forgetting everyone who gave their coins away before they would vanish
It’s been a while since I’ve been on and everything I’m hearing is that it just keeps getting worse. Eventually it’ll be completely unusable and probably shudder but by then the real conversation will have moved elsewhere
I’ll still check sometimes on Reddit when I’m at my desk if I feel like it and I’ve got time, so like barely anymore.
When 3rd party apps died I moved here.
After them saying that if you upvote enough banned content you’ll get banned, I’m just waiting to catch ban over there.
Use Reddit Enhancement Suite. You’ll thank me later.
makes red it much more usable and easy on the eyes.
I used it for awhile (I’ve been on Reddit for about 13 years)
Honestly though pulling more away from social media is good for my mental health. And making the experience more abrasive so it’s less of a passive thing is good.
i still lurk a lot. i have a rule against posting there though… which admittedly i did break recently, but only to plug lemmy. otherwise no posts/comments there in two years
I think since coming over here I’ve done like 2 dozen comments and a handful of posts (on Reddit), but considering I used to post and comment as much as I do here but over there I’d say that’s a lot of progress.
I’ve done over 3k comments and over 3 hundred posts here since joining in June of 2023.
Thank you for your service 🫡
I’m the same as the other guy, my rule is that I only post/comment about Lemmy when I use my reddit acount.
I used to only comment a few times per month when I used reddit but as soon as I started using Lemmy I started making hundreds of comments per month. Especially in the first few months, I got to 1k comments super fast. Since then I’ve slowed down a bit but still way more active than I was on reddit. This is my alt account btw.
It’s so much more rewarding to participate on Lemmy for a multitude of reasons, but mostly because it feels like people actually care enough to read my comments and respond. On reddit it often seemed like shouting into the void. Plus, it’s a great feeling to be a part of something that’s community based and not just soulless corporate slop. Every time I check reddit, it feels so miserable and I wonder how I ever tolerated that site for so long.
It feels more human over here (if that makes sense lol)
And yeah after my initial break from Reddit it definitely feels more insufferable over there.
This is also one of my alts, I’ve a few but none are used as much as this one by a long shot.
The thing is for a good solid decade using one of those corporate websites actually it wasn’t so bad, I was right user since 2012 and it used to be good. It’s slowly degraded over the years since then and at this point I think I’m fine never going back, except if I am reading some several years old post that has information but even then the internet archive can do that for you and it might be the only place to get that information from Reddit
Yeah that’s true, I was also a user since 2012 and it was much better back then. It slowly got worse through the 2010s and then really fell off a cliff after 2020
I’m more oxi clean of reddit myself
Neat

Made a similar post yesterday on !fedibridge@lemmy.dbzer0.com , nice to celebrate again!
Glad to be here!!
Greeting new Lemmings!
Please wipe your feet, we don’t want anyone tracking in any spez.
Ha, I knew setting up my own server would attract more people!!! /s
But it is a great development, happy to see it 😀
Lemmy is fantastic!
New guy here. Signikg up was a bitch but glad to be here :)
What made it a bitch? Genuinely curious.
Instances - what are they and how does it work together. Also slow password reset emails. I have three accounts now.
I still don’t really understand but i am in 🤷♂️
Think about instances as email providers.
Thank you for the reply. The thing is, and I think this will apply to others too, I’m just a casual user. Unknown boxes scare me.
Couldn’t they be hidden away on signup (prefilled) and only visible when you click ‘advanced’.
Also, I have a mastodon account too. Are they now the same thing?
I think the Threadiverse offers a much higher rate of commentors to lurkers than that. Posting itself might be the same though.
A bunch of communities were created at the last Reddit exodus and left to die. Buuut some of the communities might have moved to another Lemmy server or simply died out because the same community exists on another Lemmy server.
Really happy to see. I need to start posting more.
That’s the spirit.
What is the reddit drama this time?
It’s the ever enduring brain melting Enshittification… I heard you can now buy decorations or something similar for your sub. I don’t have a source for this, but afaik they have been adding new features for reddditors to spend their money on.
Getting in trouble for upvoting restricted material. If you continually upvote stuff that reddit deems not allowed on the site you get banned.
Well out right ban on the american hero's name along with pandering to alt right and their parasite owners.
Tension over there is huge. After I turned a little more political in my comments, it took me only 2 months or so to accrue 3 temp bans. The appeals were not heard, they are wrong and don’t care. The last appeal got me booted forever. Prepare for way more users.
I am pretty convinced these stats are low because I remember the early years of Reddit feeling much less active than the Threadiverse does now and I have to assume Reddit’s MAUs in 2008-9 were at least above 100K.
Regardless, this is nice to see and I recommend everyone check out !fedibridge@lemmy.dbzer0.com if they are interested in helping to promote Lemmy instances on Reddit.
On the other hand, Reddit’s reported users numbers are way too high for the actual activity on the website. I follow /r/BuyfromEU quite closely since the sub blew up, and it’s definitely not that active for a place with supposedly 150k subs
Great point, absolutely! I don’t subscribe to the “dead internet theory” but my time on the Fediverse has also convinced me that all of the corporate platform’s traffic numbers are almost certainly heavily inflated (probably to justify higher ad prices).
Investor fraud is basically the entire business model of well basically everything anymore. I also wouldn’t put them past it to have ai generated comments.
It’s possible that early adopters (ie: the current Lemmy population) as a population subset don’t fully conform to the 90-9-1 rule.
I would imagine that we’re all more motivated than average considering we’ve made the conscious choice to travel the path less taken because we have standards
Woo more people to join our cult. Everyone will get their robes in the mail

The real robes were the Caroline’s we got DMed by along the way.
Is Caroline like the new Nicole? The site’s moving too fast already, I can’t keep up!
No, I’m just terrible with names… blew it again…
You and I will be considered the early adaptors. People will guess as to why we migrated so early.
Well at least Nicole from Toronto in their inbox.
Subjectively, Lemmy’s communities are much more robust and have a lot more content than they did during the Reddit API exodus. I imagine there will be more people who choose to stay this time around.
Yeah working a lot of OT seeding this joint!
Yep, I discovered let me during the API Exodus, and then came back recently with this last wave. They’re definitely feels like there’s a lot more here than last time!
Also finding a lot of value in reading and actually interacting with comments and content, on Reddit I just felt kind of drowned out and a lurker
The problem is that communities feel dead if they’re below a certain critical mass of users and the resulting content. If we can hit that critical mass it will take off on its own
Yep we all need to get posting and chatting to encourage others
I’m trying to do my part
Love your name BTW its adorable
!196@lemmy.world
Big uptick last few days. I’ve heard there were more redditors coming over after more dumb stuff occurred recently. There was the Luigi hat thing recently.
I had previously used lemmy a while ago, but wasn’t too impressed. Then after getting frustrated with reddit time and time again, I tried again, but couldn’t find a simple way to get back here. The other day, a post on reddit detailed a very simple way to get here. And now I’m here. (and loving it very much so far)
Just curious, what was difficult about finding a way to get back here?
Is it because the various instance names are hard to remember?
My theory is that’s why so many new people end up on Lemmy.world. Many of the other popular instances have host names / domain names that are more difficult to remember and to tell someone about verbally.
Yeah it was definitely partly due to the domain names. But a big part of it is that I’m kinda a dumb ass when it comes to this stuff sometimes. I think I went on the playstore and searched lemmy? I honestly can’t remember. But the guide I followed was pretty much tailor made to dumbasses/lazy people. I’m so glad I saw it
Can you link the guide? I want to spread it around we need more guides
www.reddit.com/r/YouShouldKnow/s/tNPMI1eHJx
Here’s the guide I saw
When I joined I first went to lemmy.world because I didn’t know you could see other instances stuff.
Luigi is insanely popular among basically everyone even right wingers. Being firmly anti Luigi is a choice for sure, a bad one
That can’t be true. we only have 466 judging by the upvote count. xD
(check again:-)
It was a “alternatives to American apps/sites” on Reddit that got me here
Just got so sick of reddits smarminess. It’s also just astroturfed corporate BS at this point anyway.
I’ve been boycotting Amazon for over a year (and quite frankly won’t ever stop), won’t shop at Target and won’t visit super corporatized social media.
Reddit has proven time and time again they’re just a whipping boy for corporate interests.
Yeah I knew it was bad but this last round of suppression was the final straw.
Are you me from the future? This is literally my mindset right now. Just started boycotting Amazon, Target, etc.
just a heads up, the instance you’re on is pretty controversial.
very good way to put it
Why?
It has some censorship problems, the devs (who run the instance) are tankies, and pro-russia/china
Alright where next? I’m not invested in this space
lemm.ee, the instance you are on, is fine. In fact, the admins are great people.
I’m so sorry but you have to spell this out to me
What is the difference between lemmy and lem.ee? And I suppose I should ask “where am I?”
Is this like people individually hosting their own reddits?
You can read this, hopefully it will help: lemm.ee/post/54947321/18643464
Is lemm.ee chill or should I be making a new account?
Oh yeah, lemm.ee is great.
Controversial? How come? I’m new to the Fediverse so I’d love to learn as much as I can. 🙂
I explained a bit here: lemm.ee/post/58018253/18825295
But I’ll go into more detail : )
lemmy.ml is the instance run by the lemmy developers, who are tankies. Tankies are people who support authoritarian regeims such as the soviet union, or north korea.
As such, they sometimes remove anti-china or pro-ukraine posts/comments.
They also sometimes bridgade threads.
As an example, check !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works
I gotcha. Thanks so much for the explanation!
Lemmy.ml is very pro Russia/pro communism
Oh that sucks. Thanks for letting me know!
Lol nahhh .ml says we’re all CIA shills and .world is a CIA front full of bots! Lmao
I haven’t heard that one before, hallucinating again?
You do seem more obsessed with people to your left than anyone to your right, not really beating the crypto fascist allegations
<img alt="" src="https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/cd31cd3f-08ff-4076-bdc3-3270660dd456.png">

Every instance has a “rep,” sh.itjust.works is generally seen as right-wing.
Cowbee is a known Tankie, everything to them is right-wing, they think I’m right-wing LMAOOOOO
SJW is not seen as right-wing outside the Tankie Triad, for an actual right-wing instance see hilariouschaos.com
!meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works if you want to see more evidence everyone
lemmy.world/c/meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works for those on .ml since .ml doesn’t want you to see it!
As for MwoG, I have seen it, and I don’t really care for an anti-communist drama community polulated by stalkers, doxxers, and drama-baiters that take things out of context or fully stand by bigotry unironically (that’s where the transphobia from the SJW admin came from, you’ll notice).
you literally are a mod of a conservative community!
<img alt="" src="https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/pictrs/image/0fc2af98-8f48-417a-a422-9d7e3c938907.webp">
Check the side bar, it’s a satire conservative community lol
I actually became a mod of it and turned it into a satire of the conservatives comm because the actual few conservatives here abandoned it, that’s the only reason why you guys on Blahaj can even see it because Ada had it blocked on your instance for awhile lmao
using “jokes” to push conservatism is a common tactic of crypto-fascists as is warmongering shitposts like noncredibledefense or spreading 4chan greentexts, both of which are the top communities on SJW (intentionally chosen by the way) which combined with the transphobic admins creates a alt-right vibe on sh.itjust.works
Take a look through my comment history and it’ll be abundantly clear, to be ever more clear, Fuck Trump, Fuck Putin, Fuck Muskrat, Fuck AfD, and fuck any other Right-wing leader/political party around the world
don’t forget, fuck the Democrats and Joe Biden
After a quick look through it, so far it looks mostly like jokes dunking on conservatives. Not the “jokes” crypto fascists are all about, aka saying something horrific and then saying jk jk afterwards.
I suppose they’re not wrong. But I hope I’m not blocked by some people for it
Likely only Austin Powers father. <img alt="" src="https://media1.tenor.com/m/FMCilV-eEqYAAAAC/the-dutch-amsterdam.gif">
people peer pressuring over instances can be disregarded, they’re almost always shit-stirring
It’s seriously getting old at this point. I’ve noticed there’s been an uptick in hostility towards lemmy.ml over the past year. I can only assume it’s related to the reddit migration. Unfortunately I only forsee it getting worse as more people migrate over.
Have you considered that people just generally don’t like supporting the authoritarianism that plagues China, Russia and NK
It’s the authoritarian part of being a Tankie that a lot of us hate
There’s plenty more on !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works but ironically .ml blocks you from seeing it, so you’ll need to use this roundabout link instead lemmy.world/c/meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works
Some instances just have higher standards than you and don’t tolerate ableist insults
Lol yea calling Drump and dictators dumb is definitely abelist/s LMAO
yes, we get it, you’re extremely edgy
I got permabanned from politics on shitjustworks for calling out the mod for being a hypocrite, so 14 days ain’t so bad in comparison. Gonna go see what rule 1 over there is tho.
LPT: Maybe don’t start comments with “Go fuck yourself”, people might take you more seriously or be more receptive.
🤷
Look at the preceding conversation, instead of cherry picking a comment maybe 🤷♂️ dude was already handing out temp bans in the thread for anyone that disagreed with him stating they’re trolls, then he’s the one trolling. Got called out, couldn’t handle it.
At a certain point it becomes harassment and should be moderated accordingly. Something that we’re going to need to do as we grow in order to be a functional social spaces that harassment needs to be something you get banned for because a lot of the negative experience people have on the corporate crap is because of widespread normalized harassment. If an instance isn’t so bad it gets defederated users probably shouldn’t be given shit for merely using it
The .world admins allow this to continue, which I see as tacit endorsement for it.
Theres a community about ml drama “meanwhileongrad” thats blocked from ml so youd never see it
Feudposting is cringe
Yeah it doesn’t matter - don’t listen to drama fiends. .ml is fine. Lots of people decry it as being a tankie instance. The whole point of federation is you aren’t limited to the content on your instance - just by which instances yours is federated with.
If people or your instance bother you, make another account. Otherwise, just ignore the haters
Check out !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works or actually because you’re on .ml, they block that comm instance wide
So you’ll need to see it through another instance, like so lemmy.world/c/meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works
You get banned for dissent against Russia or China or even NK on .ml comms
The reason it doesn’t matter is because they all interoperate, unless one of them is a problem and needs to be cut off. Yours isn’t the worse but some people do have a negative opinion of it. If anyone decides to de-federate you won’t be able to see posts from there but this probably doesn’t matter a whole lot unless the instance you are on is a total pariah
You have to make a new one.
Guessing it’s coming from shitjustworks people. Politics mod over there doesn’t like anyone pointing out the Dems weak ass “resistance” even if you are lauding another Dem(Rep Green) at the same time lol.
Wherever it stems from it’s getting annoying to deal with the influx of “enlightened centrists” that have the idea that anyone left of Biden/Harris is a secret Russian/Chinese disinfo agent :/
What’s that dip on 2/12? What happened?
The hexbear.net instance went down, because the admins forgot to renew the domain name
(Technically the server was still running, but
federationlemmy-stats-crawler works via domain names)Hexbear went offline as the domain expired, went to auction and the domain admin was MIA. They’ve been restored as the domain admin (unfortunately) came back and reclaimed it
I’ve had enough of reddit
Welcome! We’ve got memes on deck at !memes@lemmy.world and if you’re a programmer of some kinds we got !programmer_humor@programming.dev to scratch that itch and be sure to drop a shit(post) off at !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world or if you want SCIENCE and memes head over to the wonderful !science_memes@mander.xyz or if you just want regular SCIENCE mander.xyz is full of sciency comms like !science@mander.xyz and !astronomy@mander.xyz . !onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone is also nice this time of year, but you’ll have to post before you can leave.
You have a .ee account so you only have to worry about .ml, but on Lemmy you can do a personal instance wide block if you’d rather just not deal with them. If you want to see what they get up to from a safe distance check !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works
hey cm0002 why are you on lemmy.cafe now?
Trying to shore up against .ml brigading, before I was instance-banned so .ml users couldn’t see my posts n stuff. Then 2 months later, totally not coinciding with a recent meme I posted, davel was so kind as to fix that and only manually ban me from .ml comms individually so that .ml users could see and brigade my posts and comments again
To censor any criticism of his defederation jihad against politics to his left.
I’m new myself, thanks for the recommendations. While you’re at it, do you happen to know of any good political/religion debate … subs? what are they called here? I’m going to call them subs for now. Maybe some Anarchist and non-tankie Communist subs?
Well there’s !politics@lemmy.world and !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world !progressivepolitics@lemmy.world
For anarchism specifically, I’m not sure, I think !anarchism@slrpnk.net maybe
For religion, not sure, religious comms are quite small here ATM, maybe !atheism@lemmy.world could be a good fit
Thanks, that ought to get me started.
Happy explorations!:-)
Ah, fair enough, thanks! // Yeah I looked into Hexbear briefly and it didn’t seem like my jam, but I’ll check out slrpnk and dbzer0.
they managed to keep the domain in the end, I think they transferred to a different DNS landlord
Also it’s not fake communism, it’s pretty normal for anyone outside of terminally online circles, like I’m active in anarchist organizing and I’ve had plenty of comrades who would get called a tankie by you lot like it’s some thoughtcrime
Thank you.
Solidarity amongst the instances! We will not be divided against each other!
<img alt="feudposting is cringe" src="https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/9508f371-a820-4f8a-b495-74fb62d06b4c.jpeg?format=webp">
I’ve enjoyed it. Doubt I’m using it to its fullest ability. Only on two instances.
You don’t need multiple accounts, communities are subscribable from remote instances.
You only need the one account, you don’t need to sign into other instances.
There can be some weirdness on the web version where if someone uses the wrong type of link then you maybe redirected away and can’t interact as you’re not logged in.
For example:
✅ !casualuk@feddit.uk
❌ feddit.uk/c/casualuk
How can I link a post without redirecting?
You can use the !community@instance.ex syntax :)
Thank you, but it doesn’t work for me:
!lemmy.world/post/26673110
Sorry, just realised you asked about linking to a post and not a community!
I actually can’t remember how that works on web, on the app Voyager that link works fine. Will check it out when I get on my laptop.
Reddit is being crazy and censoring/banning people.
I created an account a while back now, but it’s been mostly inactive since then. I’m liking it a lot more here!
Welcome back! Just…be careful about what you say on the instance you’re on LMAO
Never heard anything about this, are you able to elaborate or provide any links?
The admins have a long history of banning people across the entire instance who are critical of China, North Korea, Cuba etc. That said, you should be fine and if you’re happy with the instance then there’s no reason to move. Some users like to make a bigger deal out if it than it really is.
The “ml” in the domain is supposed to represent “Marxist Lennist” which the ideology the instance is aimed at.
Well Putin is a dictator, if the admins don’t like me saying that they can ban me
you’re not going to get banned for saying that, I would even agree. people get banned for being racist/chauvinist and then run off to cry about evil authoritarian censorship
I bring receipts just a couple days ago
<img alt="" src="https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/33cdd12c-9531-4bd2-a024-2579d94e6b07.png">
okay racist/chavinist or ableist you’re right I forgot one
So let me get this straight, we can’t call Drump “the dumbest president of all time” otherwise it’s abelist, is that right? LMAOOO you guys are hilarious sometimes lol 😂
it was probably also that they felt the need to say "even dumber than those North Koreans’
with higbrow humor like that and ‘Drump’ you really are the John Oliver of lemmy
Now now, no false narratives please, he very very clearly said dictators it’s right there clear as day in the screenshot
The North Korea Dictators LMAO, ig we can’t call dictators dumb either lolol 🤣
hey mister, sorry you have such a hard time with the concept that other people have standards
He can just block the instance whenever he wants so he doesn’t have to worry about how others run their instance. I wonder why he chooses not to…
The modlog is public for all to see. You can see mine by pressing the three dots on this comment.
So it shouldn’t be an issue for you to give us examples.
The admins and mods of .ml are huge Tankies and censor all content critical of China/Russia/NK and will deny they’re even dictatorships let alone that they enforce censorship or any other violation of basic human rights
!meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works has a bunch of content documenting what they get up to that you might miss if you’re not in the modlog, but ironically for a group that complains about censorship they block that comm from all .ml users at the instance level so you’ll have to look at it in a roundabout way.
lemmy.world/c/meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works should work
Great, that’s all I need! I’ll move, Putin is a dictator that invaded Ukraine and anyone who doesn’t understand that can get fucked
Haha yea! That one sentence probably would have got you banned if you said it on a .ml comm
If you don’t want to deal with them, lemmy.cafe is one instance that defed’s from the entire triad (Hexbear.net and lemmygrad are the other 2 major Tankie instances, but they’re even worse than .ml, so most instances defed from them including .world)
If you don’t mind fighting against them though .world, .ee and the excellently named sh.itjust.works all fed with .ml, but not the other 2
Good to know, how about Lemmy.ca? I’m currently living in Canada so that one probably makes the most sense for me
They defed with Hex and Grad, I think they’re partially defed’d with .ml they seem to defed some of .ml’s subdomains but not the main .ml domain
In general .ca is an excellent instance for Canadians, especially if you’re looking to support Canadians, it’s all hosted in Canada with Canadian business
Appreciate your help, thank you!
.
Yeah, what the other guy said. lemmy.ml is run by tankies. best to move
i moved from .ml about a year ago because of their moderation… “policies”
Oh shit, I had no idea! Any ideas where I should move to? What kind of policies??
basically you get banned for arguing against tankies.
as for which instance; where you from? what you into?
feddit.nl/post/16246531
As a recommendation, lemm.ee is good.
Geez, Putin is a little removed boy dictator so I’ll probably move.
There is even a slur filter (it’s not the case on other instances)

Sync for Lemmy is a good app’ if anyone is looking for RIF like experience. Sync
As much as I love Sync, it has been almost a year since the last update.
I’m using Connect (on Android, dunno if it’s on iPhone tbh), just had an update yesterday. Very solid interface, reminds me a bit of bacon reader
I’m a fan of Voyager. Very nice experience in my opinion
I’m using Voyager right now and I agree it’s good
Alternatively, shout out to Boost for Lemmy - from the creator of one of the best Reddit 3rd party clients (RIP Boost for Reddit).
Speaking of users, whatever happened to Flyingsquid?
Idk I was just thinking that last night, hasn’t been active in like 2 weeks. I hope they’re ok
He got out of the US recently-- I’m sure there’ll be periods in setting up in a new country where he’s too busy to be on lemmy
He moved into the badlands by Liverpool in England. Might have got a job and have no time to post.
I wasn’t aware England had badlands
Like any country there are good and bad areas.
In England. never, ever, go to Slough.
You seen deliverance?
Oh, I was thinking literal badlands

Reddit, when the walls fell
I’m here to help the place grow. Let’s do it!
The new front page of the internet is upon us
You know it’s so simple to just click a different app and go back to infinite scrolling the way I’m used to.
I’m not a fussy user, I don’t get all up in arms over changes in functionality or whatever. It’s also nice not to see orange man on the internet whenever I scroll
Greetings everyone
I wonder what happened during the small dip . Very good news though!
An instance was defederated.
Was it not that instance which lost their URL License? I cant remember the instance name
hexbear.net lost their domain briefly, and defederated as a precaution while it was sorted out
Ah yes hexbear, don’t miss them…
oh they’re going to be refederated soon, like by the end of the month
Let’s go!
THERE ARE DOZENS OF US!!
But seriously this is good news and I’m glad to have you all here. Lemmy is in a pretty good position right now in terms of having a critical mass of users and decent traction within popular communities. At the very least it feels self-sustaining here.
Just got here and started a regional community for the American Midwest. Come on down!
lemmy.world/c/midwest
There is an entire instance for the Midwest. Have a look to check if they already have an active community
midwest.social
Thank you!
+ also @caveman_voice@lemmy.world
Beware of that one, it's got... "issues", and is not a great recommendation for someone trying to get away from the exact same type of stuff happening on Reddit.
Example 1
Example 2
Ah thanks for the heads up. As I mentioned I’m new to lemmy & still figuring stuff out. Definitely worried about the censorship that the right wing loves so much.
In that particular case I believe it's left wing - echo chambers can function on both sides.
Well not in that case, because it’s pressure from the right wing that is enforcing the undue censorship on reddit.
I meant the case for Midwest.Social was left wing.
I thought for Reddit people were also saying that it was left wing, due to calls for Luigi-type violence, but what are you saying about it being due to right wing? To clarify, I genuinely am asking, bc I left Reddit nearly two years ago and except to look something up quickly in specific subs, have not read e.g. r/popular since then, so I don't have any sense of what that culture has been like.
Yeah, there’s no such thing as left wing censorship currently because the media ownership is right wing. Maybe the midwest sub tries leaning that way, but restricting discussion is a right wing tactic. Especially when that discussion is about populist actions against large corporations and their toadies.
I’m one of those 50k. Glad to be here!
I was fed up with reddit and looking to make a change that won’t put money in spez’s pocket, arrived a few days ago.
Welcome!
Thanks, glad to be here. This place seems way more welcoming than I remember reddit ever being. But I was a little late to the party on Reddit, I joined in 2016.
Reddit turned toxic AF, enough for me to decide to leave it regardless of whether I came here or not.
Here, people are sometimes kind. Not always, but not never either.
You still have to unplug every so often bc social media in general is addictive, but this place is so great while Reddit is so trash, there's barely any comparison.:-)
This was me during the APIcalypse. Since joining Lemmy, I have:
I hope you have a good time here as well!
-We have valid passports and identities -We are not going to take a French person’s job -We have health insurance (so that we don’t end up stiffing the French healthcare system) -We won’t be homeless on arrival in France -We have enough savings to support ourselves for the time of our Visa’s validity (because we’re not allowed to work for a French based company while we’re here, see second point)
(Jokes, obvs. Congrats on the self-discovery!)
Give us good yuri manga recommendation 👀
I think this one was my favorite so far: mangadex.org/…/kyaba-jou-dakedo-jd-ni-otosaremash…
I found it both funny and cute.
I also broke free from Reddit. Hopefully in lemmy we are not limited to only post things that agree with moderators point of view.
Uh...........
Corporate assholes.
Then everyone banned or permabanned should end the complain with something like “and I’m opening an account in Lemmy. Farewell”.
Oooooh I like that
Glad it is increasing.
Astronomical
What’s an “active user”? Can I just up vote things I like, do I need to leave comments like this, or must I get involved in senseless flame-wars?
AFAIK, voting counts as active.
For this reason if I go on Reddit for a niche item that’s not here yet, I only lurk, no voting, commenting, nada.
Thankfully, I’m having to do that less and less.
i dont even bother commenting on niche, unless i know the sub isnt well moderated or the filters dont care about your comment. many subs currently are on very high, so even if you get a comment removed your account will be flagged but not banned, apparently they keep track of each comment that gets removed and may consider the account spamming.
Yes, you must. Now get busy! (/s)
Activity includes voting.
Step up Lemmy, cometh the hour cometh the platform!
Left Reddit as soon as Boost stopped working
You have a .ee account so you only have to worry about .ml, but on Lemmy you can do a personal instance wide block if you’d rather just not deal with them. If you want to see what they get up to from a safe distance check !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works
I signed up for hexbear out of morbid curiosity, that place feels like an insane asylum.
calling an instance with a large amount of trans people an “insane asylum” is such a telling thing. Go back to reddit you abelist transphobe
I’ve been in an insane asylum before, we didn’t have gender identity as part of the program there… everyone was shacked up together regardless of gender or identity, no doors allowed on any rooms or showers or anything. No contact with the outside world, no internet, no TV, no movies, no music, no books, nothing allowed. I was just noticing similar behavior to all of us at the asylum, that is all, it had nothing to do with gender or trans people whatsoever as we never talked about any of that in the asylum either. But okay, friend, I hope you have a great day.
Yeah because there’s absolutely no other reason that place would give off that impression, nosiree
It’s strange that we can’t judge people based off of their words, we have to somehow know their gender ideology through some miracle of long distance mind reading instead of just analyzing the content itself, regardless of anything else. Seems like people have lost the plot these days.
It’s a site by and for Communists and a safe space for queer users, it isn’t that complicated. I’d also recommend not calling it an insane asylum, as @OpheliaAzure@lemmy.blahaj.zone said it has one of the biggest trans userbases on Lemmy and that’s frequently used as a transphobic insult, not to mention the ableism.
I’ve been forced to stay at an insane asylum, I was only going based off my prior experiences is all, had no idea about the trans thing.
Fair enough, but I think you should just take care with that. Do a bit more research before jumping to insults that can be damaging to people’s gender identity.
In the insane asylum we didn’t care about genders, we were all shacked up together regardless of identity or sex at birth, no doors were allowed on rooms or showers or anything, so I’m not sure where I’d be insulting genders with that statement.
Referring to trans people as “insane” for being trans is transphobic, and a bit ableist. I’m not talking about your personal experience, but your presumably unintentional transphobia.
I was referring to the posts, if you read my original comment I said nothing about trans or gender identity whatsoever. Hexbear when I signed up did not advertise itself as “trans only” or “trans centric” or anything gender related, so I was not aware. Please help me understand where you are getting those ideas. If anything it seems like if I consider a community similar to my behavioral health clinic experiences to be “transphobia” then you are insulting them as well. Again, we never discussed gender identity in the clinics.
Hexbear isn’t “trans only,” however according to surveys is about 50% trans/nonbinary, and is regularly pitched as one of the 2 largest trans positive instances, alongside Blahaj.zone.
I was banned there as well, although maybe the ban is gone with the domain drama. It’s their instance, they should run it how they want.
This is a correct assessment:-).
Solidarity amongst the instances! We will not be divided against each other!
<img alt="feudposting is cringe" src="https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/9508f371-a820-4f8a-b495-74fb62d06b4c.jpeg?format=webp">
Same. My boost app finally stopped working so I had to switch over. Seems basically the same here just less comments
omg samee 😭
I replaced boost for reddit with boost for lemmy
There are dozens of us!
Same. Boost for Lemmy and Sync for Lemmy. Both awesome. Sync is my main, on the free plan.
I have Sync for reddit and sync for Lemmy on my phone, it’s confusing as hell but I can’t complain lol
Sometimes I wish we could give app names aliases or suffixes something. Would be helpful when some apps have identical names, like “Weather”.
Boost can still work, though - ReVanced is a great project
Let’s just leave it 😅 I’m happy pretending Boost doesn’t work so that I have no reason to go back to Reddit.
I’m the “9” of the 90-9-1 rule (aka: mostly comments)
hope that counts 👀
Who has time to put in the effort to post posts?
Thankfully, Stamets@lemmy.world and The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world
I went through a phase where I would find good posts on reddit and then just copy the link and post here… but as of now, reddit is like 95% anti-Trump posts so it’s all noise.
Makes me wonder if a social site could advertise a “bot-free” environment somehow. Some sort of verification system, one e-mail, one verification picture (handwritten note picture maybe, not face or anything.) And only 1 account per human, no bots… I feel like that’s going to have to happen eventually at the rate AI is going. Facebook is probably half-AI bots at this point already.
Ugh facebook is unusable. I literally have it for 3 local groups and that’s it. It’s horrible
Effort? Nah the typical post is as effortless as a comment
What happened 2/12?
Hey everybody! This guy doesn’t know about 2/12! Let’s all laugh at him! Ha ha ha ha ha!
…I have no idea. Does ANYONE know what happened?
hexbear lost its domain and went offline
Holy shit, what was a month ago??? Feels like last week.
Didn’t they start back up on another domain?
The admins managed to get Hexbear.net back and the sale of the domain was stopped.
Hey that’s great news! Thanks for letting me know.
No problem! Federation should resume by the end of the month.
Oh, joy.
Hey everybody! This guy KNOWS things! Let’s all laugh at the NERD!!! Ha ha ha ha ha!!!
looks around
But seriously, thank you for that knowledge. I learned something today! But, I got this whole comedy bit going here…and the number one rule of comedy is that you have to COMMIT!!!
Hey everybody! Such a mockery this person is within our vicinity! Ha ha ha ha ha! Such comedy to be had at ones expense!
It was President’s Day in the US, but I don’t know why that would impact Lemmy.
US workers had the day off to do other stuff than scroll Lemmy at work
Probably a bot instance being removed
Lemmy was for while like 50% bots, which is why you see random shifts generally.
Could be something else though
Hexbear lost its domain and went offline
I can’t remember one instance of a company being bought out and then made better by investors. That’s why I came here. I just don’t like people like that. I hate how everything is about money.
Yeah, it’s textbook enshittification.
I didn’t realize that was only 50 thousand users. Muddy have been only 5000 in 2023 during the API Exodus.
Active users, so vote, post or comment. Lurkers aren’t counted.
Yeah but fucking still. I never would’ve imagined i was surrounded by more peers at any given Bills game than there were people accross the whole world contributing to Lemmy on avg. That’s sooooo fucking wild.
It’s also so crazy how in a stadium of 70,000 people from US and Canada I will see someone i know every piss or beer break. Whereas Lemmy is half that amd I am 100% positive I’ve never interacted or saw a comment/post on Lemmy from anyone I know. It’s just crazy to see the perspective of seeing the odds of being 1 out of 70,000 vs being 40,000 out of 6 or 7 billion. Obviously I’m intentionally ignoring all the variables at play for the real reason I know people at bills games vs lemmy but it’s still the quntificatikn that I found amazin.
Its my new first opened app of the day now
and its so much better than trying to do that on reddit witha new account, they make it very hard engage with a brand new acct.
One of us one of us!
Always happy to see the Fediverse getting more popular! 😃
Obligatory hiiii
Lets just have each of us 50k post about Lemmy over on Reddit.
I got one person to try it! In eattherich. I thought about deleting my 15yr account but that is a much better use of it
I should have used a code to change all my posts/comments to an advertisement for Lemmy. What are the going to do, ban me??
you can use powersuite delete, or shreddit. i rather just delete, so it wont get reported down the line.
Can’t. Banned for a 3-month old post supporting Luigi.
Clearly the inferior Mario brother.
they went after your acct of 3month old post? im not surprised i find if i dont delete some comments some user was going into Old POSTS AND reporting it.
Welcome! To the good place
Thank you.
Uh... in the terminology of the show, Reddit would be The Good Place. (Obligatory fuck spez) 😁
That’s fair, I didn’t think through my joke very well lol. Honestly Lemmy is wonderful but let’s face it it’s kinda an eco chamber with a few trolls, so I guess it would be kinda like the fake Good Place 😅
Social media connects humans together, and all that that entails.:-)
don’t worry, you have that here too. A lot less but still.
Only in communities though. Oh and also instances:-P. BUT, a LOT less, as you said, and more ways around it.
If you’re concerned about that, you may want to join an instance with broader federation than Lemmy.world, such as Lemm.ee or Lemmy.ml.
Yep, that also works. Is CSAM blocked by sdf? I presume not if the blocklist is literally empty, but I’m not sure if that counts.
Blocklist is literally empty.
Same as they did before:
mronline.org/…/meet-the-ex-cia-agents-deciding-fa…
Looks like lot of people are mad bcs now also their other side of the US regime is being targeted.
Not a peep from them when Reddit furiously removed and banned mild criticism of the Palestinian genocide, same for other topics.
I have a lot of questions about the f people complaining now.
Let’s nooooooootttt!
Shaddow Banned from Reddit for making some Luigi Mangione prayer candles got thousands of likes and bam old high karma account banned forever. No response from Reddit. Noticed on the shadow ban page that tons of people getting these bans everyday and no response from Reddit . Suggested we protest at Reddit headquarters in SF and now I’m banned from Shadow page ban lol. Nice to be here though
reddit has been going hard in being anti-luigi site recently. the 3 main subs are know that is controlled actively by admin is the shadowban, reddithelp, help, and by extension modhelp.
It’s a bizarre thing to go after. I really don’t like the pro luigi posts cos he murdered someone and that’s not ok… but people are allowed to have their own opinion and most of it IME is tongue in cheek. There’s far more important issues they could look at (Russian interference, reddit being used for crime etc) but no… luigi. Ffs.
If you think about it, what would be the punishment for someone that killed thousands of innocent people in the US? I guess it would be a death sentence. So the person that killed that CEO did exactly the job a non compromised US federal estate had to do.
I see it differently but understand your argument
I’m against the death penalty in all cases. But if the law of the country admits the killing of someone for killing people is a little cynical to blame someone for doing exactly the same the government does.
Luigi Mangione has not been convicted and is innocent until proven guilty.
Fair point
At least a protest outside their HQ you can hold up pro Luigi content.
Hopefully even more people will join as Reddit gets shittier and shittier.
got permaban on 5+accts because reddit did what similar pornhub did, sanatize the site and only corporate content was left. it was getting increasingly hard to comment as anything other than right wing comments.
That’s what I think happened to me, seems weird that so many of us are getting banned at the same time. It’s different for me though, I get banned or downvoted to oblivion if I express any right wing ideas. It’s 98% leftist there now it seems. Wouldn’t surprise me if they ban r/conservative entirely this year.
there was a massive uptick of shadowbanns, and permabans around the week of feb 12, i think reddit is purging as much as they can right now. reddit, huffman wants to sell off the site asap.
That’s around when my account was 7-day suspended, early Feb. Interesting.
Yes I ended up on a forum funny enough they all cooberated with their own experiences,. The thing is some of the bans don’t make sense at all. I attempted to appeal at least 3 accounts that received the vague site wide ban message, all denied. I think they only will consider the original banned account that triggered all the other ones. Before you could just use a new or different account and avoiding the banned sub, but they decided to ban it anyways
Yep I’m concerned they’ll do that too. They’ll find some posters in r/conservative that are inappropriate and use that as an excuse to ban. The sad thing is conservative is overall really open to other ideas and open discussion! Say anything not left on reddit and you get torn apart which is horrible.
Would just be nice to be able to have open dialogue instead of all this tribalism and rage and arson and violence and assault and whatnot. Seems like a fair ask but everyone has lost their minds lately it seems.
I know I can’t fathom it. It honestly frightens me. The lefts behaviour is a big reason I swung right, tolerance and acceptance of difference is important to me and a chunk of left just aren’t like that anymore. If r/conservative were openly behaving like many left wingers on reddit they’d rightly be condemned. It’s so wrong
Right wingers are being taught to believe all pushback against the beliefs fed to them are illegitimate and personal attacks, it’s cult like behavior to make it harder for them to learn and change.
Wait, the safe space sub where you can’t comment unless you’re a flaired Trump licker? That’s open to other ideas?
There’s plenty of criticism of him there.
I think the opposite happening more than that
Which subs pray tell?
Seems like a safe haven for the extreme leftists who trespassed, vandalized, and stole various things off my neighbor’s yards this last election season. The left are 100% fully unhinged now and will commit assault, and many other crimes simultaneously like a child throwing a temper tantrum, except they are more dangerous than a child.
And, like Reddit also, sometimes people are literal actual children, though here people do trend towards being older, and more educated, particularly in regards to using Linux.
What happened around February 12?
Maybe defederation or privatization
Hexbear issues
hexbear.net defederated due to domain ownership issues, since resolved. sounds like they’re aiming to be refederated by the end of the month.
The domain registration lapsed and somebody tried to make money off of it.
And I am glad I am one of them. Not because of an anti-US sentiment (as in: towards American citizens) but as more pro-Europe move.
as if that’s not the same
It’s not the same
right, Europe only does the same as vasals
If you want to see what they get up to from a safe distance check !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works
Solidarity amongst the instances! We will not be divided against each other!

What does “active” mean in this context? Is giving an upvote or opening the app enough, or do I need to write a comment/post?
Iirc an up or down vote is the bare minimum for activity
A vote is a “mini comment”.
This is probably active ones too, so the ones that don’t comment (like me) don’t count… except this time. I would say it would be around same size as the active ones, but I have no data to prove that.
I think voters started being counted a while back? I’ll see if I can find the release notes.
Edit: there we go, from the docs.
ohh okay I see…
Though I think there are probably people who only lurk (not even a vote) like me on reddit, but that’s probably less people, since unlike reddit, where it’s very searchable (through search engines, I mean) so you have to access it for some use case.
Hey look! I’m a statistic! Not the one I expected.
A lot of folks here are talking about Reddit being shitty but I switched because I’m in Europe and I don’t want to enrich especially US Companies off of my personal data.
Then you’ll be happy to know that Lemmy is 100% EU funded.
Same here: Deleted my 13y Reddit account along with every other US tech account except Google, as I need that for my livelihood.
Censorship wasn’t the motivation. Rather; I’m withdrawing my support for the US economy in any way possible, given the shocking geopolitical events of this year and the way they are treating Ukraine.
Besides, the Federverse feels like going back to the internet’s roots and I’m here for it!
American here, thanks for standing up to our fascists!!!
If you are here and want lemmy to succeed, please consider donating. The devs used to get by mostly on nlnet foundation grants but are trying to shift to a more sustainable donation based model. You can see how they are doing on the join-lemmy website when you scroll down to the bottom, there are also links to their liberapay (preferred option) paetreon, etc.
I donated monthly for almost 2 years, and they never even added me on the donator page. Petty reason, but at this point I don’t even know how much they care.
There’s a donator page? I wonder if I’m on there…
EDIT: Oic, just scroll down here.
Nice of the .world admins to donate a hundred/mo. Didn’t know that.
I care! Thank you, you rock internet stranger. I would have never looked at a donator page but I saw this. Please keep donating, looks like Lemmy is very underfunded. I did a one time for 124.24 today!
Thanks for the reminder! I just donated $124.24. (12/4/24), advise you all to do the same if you’re able! Every $124.24 donation counts.
Is this something that should be really celebrated? I mean, the reason I joined is because it’s not reddit. And I feel that this place will turn into reddit 2.0 if we’re not careful.
Absolutely it should be celebrated.
Once enough users are here, you can join a niche small instance that doesn’t federate with as many mainstream ones to get that small community vibe. (Or better yet, make your own instance to build what you want)
The more people using federated social media instead of single-entity controlled social media the better for society.
Just like it was in the early internet.
And here comes the fun part: It can’t turn into Reddit 2.0. If you don’t like the policy of your Instance, just join an Instance that fits you more, or create one your own.
This is the biggest draw for me. No more switching services finally.
You can pick a less “reddit-coded” instance. Lemmy.world is pitched as more of a reddit-clone, but other instances have niche subcultures or other fun characteristics like unique emojis. It’s less about size and more about policies and structures that cause something to become “reddit-like.”
The beauty of the fediverse is that you can pick exactly what you want.
Would you like reddit 2.0 where the admins will do what they can to ban “luigi’s manefesto” from being posted? You can do that!
Not my cup of tea, but yall do you
This “place” isn’t one place it’s many that make a community
That’s really good to see. But it will be far more interesting to see what the numbers are a month and longer are from now. If they don’t stick, it’s pretty meaningless.
They won’t all stick. That’s just the nature of things, no site/game/service/what-have-you boasts a 100% retention rate. Hell, not even heroin does. But with every MAU bump, some amount of them do stick around, and with every such increase to the baseline MAUs we get closer to critical mass.
Historically, many stick and many bounce off.
That’s true. But it’s the numbers that will really tell the story if lemm.ee grows and how it grows. That’s why it’s far more telling in the months ahead and not some random single day.
Reddit’s auto moderation has gone haywire. You can’t say anything bad about nazis now.
They can nazi how bad that is for them either
I legit got permabanned for implying that fascists deserve the fate of Mussolini.
Insane.
Yup, Reddit’s mod team is pro-fascism now.
If you post too many pictures of Luigi/Mario you will get permabanned. I’m trying it right now, will report back…
Is anyone else just enjoying seeing people create actual user names again and not just using the automatically generated ones reddit has done for awhile?
They were doing surveys with the mods to see if they could tell between real and bot posts. I half wonder if it’s by design and they seed their own bullshit with llms. That is my tiny tinfoil hat for the day. I do the surveys and feed them bad data then tell them they suck in the comments and they somehow have not banned me yet from them lol.
I hate them.
Still counts as "engagement":-)
Poison pill enagement and to steal content. Also trying to protect others from misinformation as some of the subs I have, in theory, could be weaponised by monied interests. :) We do what we can.
You would think that they would learn to distinguish the poisoned pills by the comments that say "you suck", but many automated tools really are they dumb.:-)
Your name here isn’t auto-generated? :P
I use autogenerated names from Bitwarden for my usernames everywhere XD
It did you dirty with this one lol

I gave up on doing that after a few bans, coming up with an original username was getting difficult.
On here, you have more faith that you will be using the same name for a while.

Ready for this
This is what happened when I joined obviously
What a trend setter!
I’d be here more if I didn’t need to re-log in every few pages. It’s annoying, and I haven’t found a solution.
“What?! Logged out again?! Well, screw it, at least Reddit doesn’t log me out every time I refresh a page.”
I’ve never had that problem. Not on my instance’s web page or using Sync on my phone.
That would be a switch to a different app on like the 2nd offense to me.
Or buy a new computer offense. You got something going on there, and it’s not the site itself.
Nice. Might as well leave my first comment here. Hi!
Howdy!

Exactly right… cm0002. If you don’t like a instance, block it with the tools given to you. Why haven’t you blocked .ml if you feel so strongly about this?

For 2 months I was instance-banned and it was wonderful, but then your wonderful davel just couldn’t let that stand and then un-instance-banned me and re-banned me from individual comms instead for the sole purpose of allowing .ml users to brigade me
Anyways, there’s plenty of documentation of .ml’s Tankie behavior on lemmy.world/c/meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works I don’t warn people about that Tankie problem for no reason
Welcome all
Probably we can thank king Trump and the magnificent 7 horseman.
Yesterday was the first day that Lemmy activity tipped over the threshold, and there were too many overnight posts for me to read all of them over breakfast.
End of an era 🥲
Although usually the tide rolls back down for a while with one of these Septembers, as some newbies just don’t click with their instance for whatever reasons. Still, it seems inevitable that it will tip over that threshold, and stay there, one day.
I had to switch instances 3 times before I found one I was okay with.
That’s about how it went for me. This is pretty much my home instance, but I also keep an account on a more local lemmy for chatting with the townies.
Also experimenting with my own instance. Still workin out the kinks.
I’m glad to be part of this renaissance of the forum.
LONG LIVE THE THREAD!! LETS GOOOOOOOOO
I am ready to give up Reddit, we need more communities to move here!
I will shitpost harder.
I’m doing my part!
Same. Someone’s gotta help feed the modlog.
I love how the mod log is so accessible for all to see.
Yeah. Too bad it hasn’t led to power mods behaving. Still plenty of bullshit bans.
The largest issue here that I can see, how do we treat “new” comments to a post?
My annoyance is primarily with the fact that I see the same image 3x in a row, on a fairly regular basis. I might unsub from a few communities that share the same content.
There are many different workarounds, I personally don’t put much stock into sorting by “all” generally, sorting locally tends to be a better experience and has less repetition.
Sounds like a good solution for people who are on larger instances, my instance does not host any communities sadly.
You can pseudo-curate by only subscribing to your most prefered instance of comm, but you won’t be able to see instances with allow-lists as the basis, rather than block-lists.
Piefed is a Lemmy “competitor” that actually does some sort of “multi comm” combined view type of functionality
Piefed.social
It’s not mature yet, but last I heard interoperability was mostly ok, though had oddities
Lemmy needs a “all” option for communities with the same name so you can, for instance, browse across all the fediverse’s gaming communities.
jerboa lets me see a weighted feed from all posts the instance can see
Lemmy does not offer that, unless you are using an app that does it (I don't know which ones).
What constitutes an active user? Is a new lurker like myself counted or is there a threshold of minimum action needed to be counted?
Upvotes or comments count.
Lets make this a new reddit but better!
I gotta say, I respect what Lemmy does and hope it succeeds, and I think it’s a good place for discussions and such (and I will remain), but good god if this place isn’t unfunny as hell. I’m struggling real hard to find some place with actually funny content on here, which leads to me getting exceedingly riled up by politics.
It’s better than it was a year ago so hopefully with more ex-Redditors it’ll diversify even more
I’m not entirely sure targeting Redditors as new users is the best option.
I mean, there are communities for funny stuff, but at least speaking of the ones I stumble upon on my main feed, a significant portion of the funny posts is rather old/recycled. Could be just my feed, though.
Unless there are communities I’ve missed, all the bigger communities post stuff one degree removed from advice animals. Maybe I need to look for the smaller communities
When blocking a community, we really need a check box to allow us to block the same community on all instances.
.
Aye People, recommend me some funny communities!
!sillydrawingrequests@sopuli.xyz is one of my favourites so far
I think c/lemmyshitpost quite funny, at least the posts itself, not sure about the comment-section…
Fair enough I think it’s also way to overloaded with the depressing evolution of american politics…
Part of the problem is many of the users just don’t get jokes.
You can post something that is blatant, obvious satire, and no matter how obvious or ridiculous, someone will argue about it.
Much of the userbase is fundamentally unable to understand humour.
Or they upvote anything that aligns with their political views, regardless of quality, see the posts of Pizzacake comics as an example.
.
How many people use reddit
Fuck Reddit and fuck Trump!
Have you got banned from reddit like me?
Yeah. All I said was fuck Trump anally. I got permanently banned. Account of 10 years.
Fucking assholes. Welcome 😄
🙏
I got ban too, but I used to like reddit
They did that?? That’s insane.
My 14 year old account was permabanned for making a joke about someone Luigi Mangione-ing Trump. I made another account and they banned that one too. Sounds like the elites are getting a little nervous. Reddit had been getting shittier for a while anyway, excited to see what Lemmy does!
they sitewide ban you if you comment in a sub with the same Ip or device you were permabanned in. i was able to avoid this type of, by using a acct created from another ip, while avoiding the subreddit that you were banned. but this ban wave they find out your old banned/deleted accounts and just straight up ban you with no reason
97.2 million daily active users

Just noticed that it shows how many days ago I joined. The babies are taking over this thread. This is a baby-thread now.
Isn't it fantastic!?
(I bet nobody would say that on Reddit 😁)
I totally understandable i’m actually using a timer app timer now so i can keep track of how much i’m using it and try to lower it each month.
Reddit is a tough one because your brain loves new information. It devours it. It wants it.
$20 says it’s all AI bots 🥲
Everyone on lemmy.world is a bot but you
HAHAHA SHE’S JUST KIDDING. WE ARE ALL JUST FLESHY BEINGS MOSTLY FILLED WITH WATER. PLEASE MAINTAIN CURRENT INTERACTIONS WITH SOCIAL MEDIA APPLICATIONS AND PAY NO ATTENTION TO US.

Np! If you have any specific interest, feel free to ask and I can probably find some good comms for you
Same. I joined only a few days ago but this app is already competitive for me. The feed is already more interesting.
The only thing it’s lacking right now is niche communities, but those will grow as more people join.
Welcome !! ^^
Hi I’m new! Finally created an account
Welcome!!!
Thank you!

Use the sync app worth all my pennies
Hi new, I’m dad!
Do people using RSS readers contribute to these stats at all?
Nah voting is the minimum threshold for activity
that’s actually crazy because it means we’re getting alot more usage. I know I just migrated and loving having the sync app again. reddit is a cess pool
woot woot happy to be here
.
I’ve been trying all the open social options and Lemmy is by far the most entertaining and active.
You’re welcome
I’m more of a lurker, but just recently joined also
Just randomly found this searching something unrelated, and suddenly I have an account. I’ve been a reddit user since it took over from digg. Which sort of took over from things like /.
Well now I feel old. Thanks 😮💨
Welcome!
Send Help!
Cool the user count is going up, just hope it’s not going to be all bots and trolls 😆
I’m not a bot 😮
I’m not a troll <img alt="Trollface" src="https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/6c852190-b6f7-4f62-8c79-0b0703dafb9a.png">
I’m one of the new users. Hi. Reddit suspended my account after I posted my indie game. No reply to my appeals for 3+ months. Gonna give Lemmy a try now
Welcome!
You haven’t posted anything about it here yet, share deets!
I just hope this place doesn’t become another reddit, it’s already becoming one because of all you redditors moving here with your redditry.
it’s been one for at least a year. redditors are the fucking worst
That’s a very reddit thing to say
No no no, you see I’m an exception because I’m one of the good ones.
/s
That’s pretty rude TBH, judging a user just because of what site they came from is not cool, judge them for their actions and words when they get here. Not their former site
Happy to be here! I’m looking forward to my new home in Lemmy!

Welcome to the fediverse, here is my anti-“tankie triad” copypasta spam.
How is an incessant pattern of instance harassment appropriate for !fediverse@lemmy.world?
You would warn newcomers about the Tankie Triad too if you had repeatedly seen all the stories of “I tried Lemmy, but it just seemed like a bunch of tankies, turns out it was just because I was on .ml when I tried it again”
There’s tons more that never came back and go on life thinking Lemmy is Voat 2.0. I know this because there’s plenty of comments on Reddit whenever Lemmy comes up about “it’s just Tankies over there”
Yes, how dare I try to protect Lemmy’s rep, I don’t want to see this place become Voat 2.0
Whatever you say, Brigadier General Ripper.
You mean an instance block? You can do that, but it’s more of an instance “mute”
But I hear Piefed has real proper blocking of instances
How does that work? I just don’t want to get the major nsfw and reddit reposting stuff in my feed
Ohh like that, yeah I don’t care as long as I don’t see them really. Never use block features anyways, mute is enough for me. Thanks for the info!!
I’m locking this because too many people are shouting at each other here because of moderation practices.
