How have existing Pixelfed servers handled the increased load?

Pixelfed is seeing a surge in popularity. Anyone that’s currently running one, have you run into any roadbumps, or have things gone smoothly? pixelfed.social has had scaling issues, but maybe it’s easier if you’re just federating to that instance instead of handling the load from user logins?

Reminder to donate if you’re using one of those servers btw:

That #Pixelfed is now in the Top 10 of most downloaded APPs in the USA, also means that we, as a Fediverse community, have to come together.

If you see a link somewhere, PLEASE support your PIXELFED server. Even when it is just with $2, $10 or $50.

Their operational costs are surely skyrocketing and we have to make sure that this does not become a Fediverse debacle but a Fediverse success story.

Pinging @jgrim@discuss.online since you run social.photo as a sister site to discuss.online

jgrim@discuss.online on 16 Jan 21:09 collapse

I see signups but no activity. I’m not really sure it’s growing but people are trying it.

chris@lemmy.grey.fail on 16 Jan 18:21 next collapse

I’ve doubled my server load from one user… to two.

m_f@discuss.online on 16 Jan 18:24 collapse

How big of servers are you using? Is the load just from syncing with pixelfed.social?

chris@lemmy.grey.fail on 16 Jan 18:26 collapse

Pi 5 with a 1TB NVMe strapped to it. Pixelfed, so far, is sipping resources; Mastodon, on the other hand…

m_f@discuss.online on 16 Jan 18:29 collapse

Pretty impressive you’re running it on a pi, even with how nice the 5 is 👍

Are you running all of the services at grey.fail on the same pi?

chris@lemmy.grey.fail on 16 Jan 18:31 collapse

Nope. I’m running three Pies and a custom UNRAID build.

Share the loooaaaaad.

all this pixelfed talk is making me want to host my own instance… I think I’ll try to get one up this evening and reply to this comment once I manage to make an account and post somethkng

undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch on 17 Jan 06:07 next collapse

I’ve wanted to for a long time but I want photos to be saved losslessly. I don’t want everything converted to JPEG.

elena@lemmy.world on 17 Jan 06:12 collapse

I’m now hosting my own Pixelfed instance (as of Tuesday). I really like being in charge of my own server…

The drawback I’m seeing is that Explore and search sometimes yield no results.

Like searching for “Nikon” just now results in “no content found” 🤷🏻‍♀️

More than Bluesky? Interesting. Did something happen at Instagram/Snapchat for this to happen?

i'm curious, too. the vague idea i got was that the app just launched, people are pissed at meta, and the word pixelfed was banned on a site, causing a Streisand effect. i could just be spreading rumors, though.

jagged_circle@feddit.nl on 17 Jan 05:26 collapse

Meta killed fact checking

ZeroPhreak@lemmy.world on 17 Jan 00:17 next collapse

Some instances like pixelfed.art have manual sign-up confirmation so I guess that doesn’t scale particularly well. On the other hand it prevents sudden spikes in active users. 😀 The sign-up queue was 8000 there the other day.

Ouch!

I joined .social and opened my account / profile. I can scroll the feed and see posts but every time i try and post the app hangs for a few minutes then crashes. I had assumed it was a load thing but it’s been nearly 48hrs now.

Mac@mander.xyz on 17 Jan 05:04 next collapse

Try Pixelix.

m_f@discuss.online on 17 Jan 14:12 next collapse

Looks like it’s still a load thing:

Same, a bit sad experience with login failures because the authentication process timeout. And slow refresh, hanging when scrolling… I am considering leaving social to go another instance. The point is like on Mastodon : if you are not on the main instance you will miss content, by design you get that split view of federated instances… It’s anoying.
