Coming from a different instance, I genuinely did not notice the events, it was an interesting summary to watch.

Oh wow

mesamunefire@lemmy.world on 11 Feb 00:26 collapse

Yeah I never even knew this was going on.

Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 11 Feb 00:42 collapse

Oh I was aware, I was more surprised someone bothered making a video about the changes

Sunshine@lemmy.ca on 11 Feb 01:07 collapse

Lemmy is becoming popular!

vikingtons@lemmy.world on 11 Feb 00:36 next collapse

fucking hell the amount of effort that would take on popular communities is insane. Was totally unaware of this policy change.

Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 11 Feb 00:44 collapse

Wait, they reverted the policy about respectful dissent, right?

Can’t watch the video right now, will do tomorrow

vikingtons@lemmy.world on 11 Feb 00:47 collapse

Sorry I’m not sure if it was reverted; I was completely unaware of it even being proposed.

Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 11 Feb 00:50 collapse

Interesting, that was a pretty heated discussion

That’s on me. I come here for tech and cute stuff and it’s easy for me to miss announcements pinned at the top 😓

roofuskit@lemmy.world on 11 Feb 01:35 next collapse

So your options as a mod are to endlessly debate with people arguing in bad faith, or just ignore them and let the community block them.

Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 11 Feb 01:55 collapse

The policy was reverted. You actually see a comment from LW top admin on Peertube. He wasn’t aware.

OpenStars@piefed.social on 11 Feb 02:49 collapse

At the top of the announcement post:

There will be a new announcement soon to clarify.

29 days later...

Also, who calls LW "dot World"? He said that in the video, but I've literally never heard it called that, ever?

Also the communities are not locked anymore? One example is https://lemmy.world/c/unpopularopinion, which at one point was locked, and might have remained so for one week (out of the past month) but e.g. in the last week there's been about one post per day, so most definitely not locked anymore, and hasn't been for 20 days.

There's a LOT of inaccuracies in this video. Which makes me legit wonder if this video was a trap to collect the IP addresses of people who commented on this post. Oops... but fyi, that's a real thing that is possible to dox people irl. I hope people are using appropriate protections!

Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 11 Feb 03:00 next collapse

The video is 1 month old

OpenStars@piefed.social on 11 Feb 03:05 collapse

Well that answers one of the questions about it at least. This post is only 2 hours old and the cross-post chain likewise less than a day, so thay raised even more questions about why this month old video is being spread across several instances despite being invalid now, even if it still was at the time it was made (which it may not have been, the reversion of the announcement was made extremely quickly due to the enormous uproar against it).

andrew_s@piefed.social on 11 Feb 10:32 collapse

The first link in the cross-post chain is to https://piefed.social/post/413111, which is for the channel, and shows that it was made 4 weeks ago, and includes a comment from the main LW admin.

Your suspicions about this video seem off, but if you want to keep them, they should be directed at person who posted this old video into Lemmy, not the video's author. As well as a PeerTube instance, Jeena has a PieFed instance, and it seems reasonable enough for him to use his own channel to discuss things that have affected him and are relevant at the time.

What's even weirder is that this video was already posted to !videos@lemmy.world by Jeena a month ago, and OP commented on it then. It doesn't get picked up as a cross-post (by either Lemmy or PieFed) because PeerTube has 2 different formats for its URLs (a recent change to PieFed means they get they will do from now on, but it doesn't apply to old posts).

OpenStars@piefed.social on 11 Feb 11:09 collapse

Thanks, it seems there was a lot here I was missing.

Edit: e.g. I missed that this is Jeena himself, who I generally enjoy reading his comments, and if made a month ago rather than now definitely makes this all make a ton more sense than it would have otherwise.

Irl, people actually do say .world, .ml, .whatever, when the stuff before he dot is lemmy or close equivalent, and the conversation is about instances.

As in, “yeah, I had an account on .ml, but they be trippin, so I moved over to .ee”

But instances like the one I’m on just get called by what it says, or like blahaj, just by a single part.

remotelove@lemmy.ca on 11 Feb 06:41 next collapse

“That one fucking instance” is also acceptable.

You know which one.

OpenStars@piefed.social on 11 Feb 11:06 collapse

Yeah I've rarely seen it for .ee and .ml.

southsamurai@sh.itjust.works on 11 Feb 12:01 collapse

It kinda varies for me.

.ee gets referenced less for sure. The folks I know that have used lemmy longest will do the dot ee, or double-e. Noobs tend to fumble with it, as in “lemmy with two ees at the end” and eventually go with whatever they’ve heard spoken most.

But .ml always gets the . I believe that’s because there’s no shorthand for it verbally. Mull? Mill? Mall? Too many options for most folks to bother trying.

OpenStars@piefed.social on 11 Feb 12:40 collapse

No not always. Just as ".world" I usually see called rather LW, so too ML works. And yours would be SJW:-). Maybe that's mostly my conversations with Blaze but I've definitely seen LW used elsewhere, though I can't recall ever seeing someone saying .world. Perhaps I simply wasn't paying proper attention:-).

southsamurai@sh.itjust.works on 11 Feb 14:34 collapse

Yes, always irl for me which I had stated previously.

I’m talking about humans in meat space saying the dot out loud. Because that’s what the comment I was responding to seemed to be about.

OpenStars@piefed.social on 11 Feb 19:14 collapse

Oh okay, so not that they say "dot world" when referring to lemmy.world (bc almost nobody talks about Lemmy irl from what I can see:-), but in the general sense they say whatever comes after the dot out loud, I get you now (I think):-).

Sunshine@lemmy.ca on 11 Feb 04:44 collapse

You know someone is going to start a weekly Lemmy drama Peertube channel!

sundrei@lemmy.sdf.org on 11 Feb 09:12 collapse

… but no one will be able to find it. /s
