Friendica needs some serious work on its ui. One reason lemmy works is because there’s lots of good third party apps.

Blaze@feddit.org on 14 Jan 09:32 collapse

Friendica looks legitimately old school. Some people might like the aesthetic, but I guess it’s not the taste of the majority

Sunshine@lemmy.ca on 14 Jan 15:48 next collapse

I like the feel. It’s cozy!

jackalope@lemmy.ml on 16 Jan 21:28 collapse

It’s not just aesthetics either. There’s some rough edges in the structure of the UI too.

@Sunshine Personally I think this overview of Friendica written by Elena is much better

Since the text is from 2020, some information is no longer up to date: The connections to Twitter and Facebook are closed, instead there are now connectors to Tumblr and Bluesky

jagged_circle@feddit.nl on 14 Jan 14:34 collapse

wtf is a connector?

Like if I install a connector for Bluesky, then does that allow me to just subscribe and see bluesky content in my friendica feed? Or does it allow me to post onto friendica posts found on bluesky? Or does it allow me to post onto bluesky my posts on friendica?

The docs don’t make this clear what its for.

caos@feddit.org on 14 Jan 16:38 collapse

If I understand correctly, all three are possible, but I don’t use it myself and only know these instructions in German. Here are the most important paragraphs (automatically) translated:

“Friendica allows you to make various settings. You therefore have the choice of whether and how you want to use the connection to Bluesky.

Even if the connection to Bluesky has been established and your contacts have been imported, this does not mean that all your Fediverse posts are automatically visible on Bluesky.

Friendica gives you the freedom to decide how deeply you want to integrate with Bluesky.

[ 1 ] ‘Publish to Bluesky by default’ - if this option is activated, every post will also be visible on Bluesky

[ 2 ] ‘Import the remote timeline’ - if this option is activated, all posts from the accounts you follow will be imported.

[ 3 ] ‘Complete the threads’ - if this option is activated, all comments on your posts and those of your contacts will be completed with additional comments.

Your connection to Bluesky is now established. Your timeline will now be filled with posts from the Fediverse and Bluesky.

You can now interact with your Bluesky contacts. For example, by entering a comment without opening the Bluesky app or browser window.”

Are there any good ios apps?

Sunshine@lemmy.ca on 14 Jan 15:47 next collapse

Unfortunately there aren’t, just for Sailfish and Android.

br0da@lemmy.world on 15 Jan 03:19 collapse

Not having an iOS app although not the end of the world (can use the web app) is definitely not helping further this along.

jagged_circle@feddit.nl on 14 Jan 14:32 next collapse

Thanks for this.

I just signed up for friendica. I found it was slow as hell and I couldn’t find content. I posted a question in one of the most popular groups, and I got no response.

Also, their “forums” aren’t really forums. They’re just a wall.

dharmacurious@slrpnk.net on 14 Jan 14:48 next collapse

Honestly, friendica seems cool, in the same way Facebook seemed cool in the early days, but if we’re remaking social media for the fediverse, can we try to remake Myspace instead?

Maven@lemmy.zip on 14 Jan 16:14 collapse

They did already actually! spacehey.com

I don’t think it’s part of the fediverse tho… I’ve heard hubzilla is the closest to MySpace but none of them are 100%

dharmacurious@slrpnk.net on 14 Jan 17:24 next collapse

I forgot about spacehey! I made an account and never got around to setting it up. Shame it’s not part of the fediverse, though! Myspace had that part where you could, like, post a random letter or something that wasn’t confined to your friends. I can’t remember what it was called. I just remember Mrs. Abnorman Punkrockwell used to post open letters. Lmao. Anyway, it would be perfect for integrating into Mastodon, and Myspace groups would be perfect for integrating into Lemmy.

rickyrigatoni@lemm.ee on 14 Jan 18:23 collapse

I’m pissed at myself for skipping over myspace. How much control do they give you over your page? It looks pretty robust.

br0da@lemmy.world on 15 Jan 03:20 collapse

Someone please make a dedicated iOS app for Friendica
