The studio is Neople, developers of Dungeon Fighter franchise. The franchise is massive in Asia so this is big news.

I was on a team, not in the game industry, where they promised bonuses if the team worked hard and met certain milestones, but then they reneged on the promise after the work was done.

I have never seen a team implode so quickly. Nobody did work anymore. People were actively searching for other jobs at their desks.

Everybody good left the company. Everyone who was at least mediocre switched teams. The only people left on that team were the absolute dregs. And the product wasn’t actually even finished at the time. This was a mid development bonus.

There should be criminal penalties for that kind of shit. Letting management off the hook without any personal consequences just encourages it.

Lifetime plans are no longer available so, we’ve done you a favor and enrolled you in the pay-per-joke plan without your consent.

I actually wasn’t that invested since I couldn’t have gotten a bonus. The bonus required a certain amount of hours worked, but I always finished my work early.

It’s the principle of committing wage theft, engaging in a contract (possibly verbal) and then keeping the promised compensation instead.

Criminal penalties, “go into their office and cut off their hands”. Tomato, tomato.

Always get it written into a contract if you can.

Executive bonuses should require a 2/3 vote approval from employees.

Alaik@lemmy.zip on 09 Aug 00:27 collapse

As it stands that would functionally outlaw them.

Which is fucking good.

Most executive ideas are short term idiocy. The rest of their “good ideas” aren’t because they’re soooo smart only they could have thought of them; its just that everyone else is a better person and not a fucking parasite and wouldn’t consider doing them for profit.

dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net on 09 Aug 00:38 collapse

Yeah, that was my thinking. If 2/3 of the regular employees are so impressed with an executive they think that executive deserves a bonus, that exec has probably done real good for the rank and file.

The landmark legal ruling on lay offs and pay cuts in Japan is great. Any Japanese company must objectively be in financial difficulty to justify lay offs and salary cuts. That’s why it is common for Japanese executives to take pay cuts, because they can’t do the disingenuous move of laying rank and file while giving bonus to executives, not because higher ups genuinely care about their employees.
