Thoughts on Mario Kart World

While I am personally excited for a new Mario Kart after 10ish years, I am slightly skeptical of the quality of the gameplay, as it seems a little cartoony, a little bit like Super Mario Strikers, where the game is fun for like 2 weeks then no one plays it ever again. What do y’all think?

It has some gimmicks that I don’t think will stand the test of time, but mostly I think it’ll be like 8 with some tweaks. It’ll be fine, I think.

RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world on 03 Apr 16:49 next collapse

Seems interesting, but not for the price.

originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com on 03 Apr 16:56 next collapse

not enough to get me to buy a new switch, sorry.

kat_angstrom@lemmy.world on 03 Apr 17:01 next collapse

Too expensive

icecreamtaco@lemmy.world on 03 Apr 17:13 next collapse

Everything I want was announced for “sometime in 2025”, not launch day. It looks good though.

Zarxrax@lemmy.world on 03 Apr 17:15 next collapse

Looks like some of the biggest changes the series has ever seen. I’m excited for it, but like many others, not excited enough for the price they are asking right now.

TheLowestStone@lemmy.world on 04 Apr 11:17 collapse

Then don’t buy it. Buying it tells them it’s ok to keep raising prices.

AllTheKarma@lemmy.zip on 04 Apr 16:58 collapse

You can’t expect prices to never increase. That’s not realistic. It sounds like small budget or free games are more your speed.

TheLowestStone@lemmy.world on 04 Apr 17:50 collapse

You Nintendo shills are hilarious. Have fun shelling out premium prices for out of date tech.

AllTheKarma@lemmy.zip on 04 Apr 18:32 collapse

Lol! I’m not a Nintendo shill. I rarely play Nintendo. Priorities change in life and that means sometimes changing up how you do things. The Switch 2 fits into my family picture.

It just sounds like you’re a broke little boy that can’t afford to play video games anymore. You could always save for a few months. Maybe find a better job that pays more? Be better professionally.

ModernRisk@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 03 Apr 17:28 next collapse

Seemed fun but I noped out of everything the moment, I heard the prices.

Steam Deck OLED + Emulations is the way to go.

rylock@lemm.ee on 03 Apr 17:58 next collapse

I don’t see the appeal beyond for children.

Nintendo reminds me of Disney more and more, pulling out the same old tired franchises for increasingly cynical cash grabs that prey on people’s nostalgia.

icecreamtaco@lemmy.world on 03 Apr 19:45 collapse

“for all ages” and “for kids” are two different things. They don’t make kids games except for some of the yoshi platformers and even those are still playable

RedStrider@lemmy.world on 03 Apr 18:01 next collapse

Looks pretty different from any game we’ve seen yet. I guess they made it that way since mk8 is already compatible with the new console, so it needs to be something other than “yet another Mario Kart” to not be overshadowed by 8.

Maybe I’ll pick it up in a couple years, but there’s still more than enough games I haven’t played on the Switch 1 for the steep price of the Switch 2 to be justified for me personally.

FurtiveFugitive@lemm.ee on 03 Apr 18:17 next collapse

I think it looked great. More variety, bigger races, a world to play around in, etc those are all winning ideas from where I’m sitting. Adding something like wall jumps fits in the Mario universe and could add some interesting skips on courses and things. I was very excited after that trailer.

Of course now that pricing has been revealed, all of that excitement has been sucked out of the room for me. I’ve got a Steam Deck in the mail right now and that’s probably going to be it for me this next gen. Metroid 4 for the OG Switch might be my last Nintendo purchase

_NetNomad@fedia.io on 03 Apr 18:31 next collapse

i'm pretty excited. i was disappointed by 8 and disapointed even more when we got it again on Switch instead of a new installment, with . one of the main things that bugged me was the kart customization that felt more like picking nerfs than buffs. having that eliminated alone makes the game 10x more appealing, and then this new rally mode seals the deal for me

...aside from the price like everyone else is saying. i'll gladly get it used, but if we all wait for it to go on sale used, there won't be any used copies to buy used! the comments in the gameplay streams nintendo did today where flooded with demands to drop the prices so i think everyone is on the same page. it'll be interesting to see in the coming months if nintendo budges

Kelly@programming.dev on 03 Apr 20:49 collapse

As a bundled launch title I expect most launch window sales will be digital. There won’t be 2nd hand game cards on the market in any volume until after they drop the bundle.

I’m not big on the idea of open world racing. To me, driving between race tracks looks like a chore.

I’ve seen other racers do it, but I’ve never really delved into a game like that. Maybe once I do I’ll really like it.

I do think grinding rails and wall jumping around looks pretty fun in MK. But it could end up gimmicky and unexiciting once you’re used to.

Basically all a big ‘wait and see’ from my perspective.

anakin78z@lemmy.world on 03 Apr 20:17 next collapse

Driving to tracks is 100% a chore. It’s made me not enjoy any new racing game in the last 5 years. I really hope this game has an option to skip that and jump right into a race. I don’t look forward to wrangling my family to drive to the same track just to start a race. I’m sure at least one of my kids would drive in the opposite direction because they think it’s funny.

MorningThunder@lemm.ee on 03 Apr 21:07 collapse

Agree 100%. From the trailer, at least, it looks like there’s a separate “Free Roam” mode, and it will otherwise be normal Mario Kart. Also looks like they’ll maybe have races that will span multiple tracks, which I can see being cool.

MysticKetchup@lemmy.world on 03 Apr 21:01 next collapse

As a Forza Horizon fan my curiosity is piqued. I like being able to shift vibes from an intense race to just cruising around the landscape, and Mario Kart is a very different style of racing so it’d be a very different experience

HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club on 04 Apr 11:00 next collapse

Looks like they had to do something different than Mario Kart 8 and they did. The game looks interesting.

It isn’t interesting enough to buy, but then I figured I might sit this generation out.

SolarPunker@slrpnk.net on 04 Apr 12:57 next collapse

It seems cute but Sonic Racing Crosswolds seems so much better!

TORFdot0@lemmy.world on 04 Apr 13:54 next collapse

The price is too high. They are going to sell skins and characters. The game is going to be fluffed with open world sections instead of actual content. I probably won’t enjoy it.

My kids will though

Hazelnutcookiez@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 04 Apr 16:32 next collapse

I’m pretty excited for it I enjoy Mario Kart games,I don’t play/like any other type of racing games so being able to drive to the next course is new to me and looks kinda fun.

AllTheKarma@lemmy.zip on 04 Apr 16:56 next collapse

I personally can’t wait. I have an OLED and MK8D but just didn’t play it enough due to life getting in the way. This has me beyond excited to play it. It’ll be nice to get into a game with my fiance from the start especially because she plays basically only animal crossing.

happydoors@lemm.ee on 04 Apr 18:45 collapse

I think it’s cool. Just another Mario kart game. Updated graphics and world exploring is neat. I would be loving this game if I was 10. In my thirties? Nah. $$$
