Jump Ship Demo is Live! (store.steampowered.com)

I’ve been interested in trying this game out ever since they posted some early gameplay footage over a year ago. Looks kind of like a mix between Star Citizen (in and out of ship gameplay), Helldivers (4 player co-op/PvE missions), and Sea of Thieves.

I hope the demo comes to consoles as well I really want to try it out.

Demigodrick@lemmy.zip on 09 Jun 18:36 next collapse

Been playing this for a couple of days with friends - amazing game, demo is great. Like a mix of deep rock, sea of theives etc. Really worth checking out.

BCOVertigo@lemmy.world on 09 Jun 19:58 next collapse

Can you compare it to voidcrew if you’ve played that? I want to like a game like this but voidcrew never hooked me and I’m curious how you feel a few days in.

Demigodrick@lemmy.zip on 09 Jun 20:07 collapse

I very briefly played voidcrew and refunded it. Jump ship is far superior, even for a demo.

slazer2au@lemmy.world on 10 Jun 10:52 collapse

I see it like FTL but you are the crew.

badbytes@lemmy.world on 09 Jun 18:37 next collapse

Only on M$. Sad.

SincerityIsCool@lemmy.ca on 09 Jun 18:58 next collapse

Doesn’t work with proton?

MajinBlayze@lemmy.world on 09 Jun 19:05 collapse

Will find out soon

Working fine for me in the prologue using the default settings in steam

Zikeji@programming.dev on 09 Jun 19:04 collapse

It has Platinum in ProtonDB for now. Definitely appears to be playable on Linux.

MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz on 09 Jun 19:13 collapse

It is.

Both me and a friend I played with did so on linux. No extra fixes, just install and play.

SincerityIsCool@lemmy.ca on 09 Jun 19:24 collapse

Glad to hear it! Honestly I find almost everything just works. I often forget that things are supposedly Windows only.

MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz on 09 Jun 19:17 next collapse

Played this too on the weekend, aside from clearly unfinished stuff, I was thoroughly impressed.

They even thought of solo/two player cases, with a robot crewmember that helps out with more stuff the fewer human players are on-board.

A whoo boy, the sound design is delicious. The first person guns, the ship weapons and engines both when flying/using them, and hearing them when running around the ship. The jumpdrive. The MUSIC.

The team is clearly pouring their souls into the game and it shows. The vibes are excellent.

FlihpFlorp@lemm.ee on 09 Jun 20:54 collapse

I even like how a solo duo changes the bot, in solo legally distinct bosco will do everything while in a duo he will man the guns and I think he performs a ship repair if you have a repair kit (that might be a solo thing idk if he does it in duos)

MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz on 09 Jun 22:20 collapse

With a duo, if the second player is walking around the ship/not aboard, Buddy will man the guns. If the second player is manning the guns, it will reload the guns (even crafting the required supplies when doing so). It does not seem like it will put out fires, or do repairs.

In solo, he will use the sensors, he will man the guns, perform repairs, empty the materia collectors, accompany you on space walks, carry items back to the ship for you… Basically a ton of stuff.

What I was really impressed with is that Buddy still helps out in a duo. We would have been in trouble otherwise. Keeping the ship together during a big fight is a full-time task, so when a fire starts up, mines grab onto the hull, or repairs become necessary, the second player can hop off the guns and Buddy will take over while you put out fires, fight off boarders, etc. It’s great.

And reloading the guns just means a duo can keep fighting as long as nothing is going wrong with the ship.

Essentially, you get to do the fun and chaotic parts, while Buddy picks up any slack when too many things need doing at the same time.

FlihpFlorp@lemm.ee on 10 Jun 01:17 collapse

Ah yeah I just couldn’t remember what he did in duos

But yeah I love how in solo he’s a bit of everything and actually does it instantly, emptying the filters while still firing and refilling ship ammo

I do like how in duos who does that little bit extra so whoever’s on guns isn’t running back and forth fulfilling both engineering and combat duties

Do wish buddy had finer control like “stay on the ship” or prioritize maintenance over combat or vice versa but hey that’s what the feedback button is for

warm@kbin.earth on 09 Jun 19:23 next collapse

Ah, Hyperspace, it's come a long way since it was called that. It's a fun game, works flawlessly on Linux too with Proton.

QuadratureSurfer@lemmy.world on 09 Jun 19:35 collapse

That’s the one, looks like they switched names about a year ago?

warm@kbin.earth on 09 Jun 21:19 collapse

They went through a few ideas until settling on Jump Ship iirc. Jump Crew was one I remember.

Glad to see its gained popularity now, it has a lot of potential!

AlexisFR@jlai.lu on 09 Jun 19:26 next collapse

Is that the Space Extraction shooter that looks like Overwatch? or another one?

Edit : That looks nice, way more like Elite Dangerous, and PvE only!

Glide@lemmy.ca on 10 Jun 02:02 collapse

I do want to state that the flight model has NOTHING on Elite. But otherwise, it is in a lot of ways a game which I wish Elite was a lot closer to.

peetabix@sh.itjust.works on 09 Jun 20:11 next collapse

Anyone tried this on a Steam Deck?

ShadowRam@fedia.io on 09 Jun 20:17 next collapse

Demo's been live for over a week now?

Friends and I already maxed everything out last week.

Is this something new/different?

(Great Game btw, can't wait for release)

QuadratureSurfer@lemmy.world on 09 Jun 20:34 collapse

Has it been? I just got the email from Steam a few hours ago that it’s Live now. They must be really late to notify everyone in that case.

Looking through the community it looks like they had originally planned to release the demo today, but ended up releasing it early on June 5th, and the game will only be available to play until the 16th.

Edit: typo

match@pawb.social on 09 Jun 20:48 next collapse

every frame of that trailer has something firing

LifeCoffeeGaming@lemmy.world on 09 Jun 21:44 next collapse

If you enjoy this vibe check out void crew. Similar premise but been out a few years and more rogue like elements

HotsauceHurricane@lemmy.world on 09 Jun 22:52 next collapse

That sounds rad as fuck.

Glide@lemmy.ca on 10 Jun 01:59 next collapse

Friends and I downloaded it, prompted by this post. There’s a little bit of awkwardness and animation jank, but man, does the game get the core concept right.

Space is not flat, the ship feels like a near arcane contraption, rail guns should feel like they’ll punch a hole in a small planet, and grappling hooks always feel good. These guys know what I’m looking for. The only thing I could genuinely ask for is a more true to physics flight model, but ultimately, I’ll be too busy taking down fighters using a rocket launcher while gravity-booted to the nose of my ship to care too much.

MilitantAtheist@lemmy.world on 10 Jun 11:24 next collapse

An old colleague started making this a long time ago and it grew into this. Well done!

supercriticalcheese@lemmy.world on 11 Jun 10:35 next collapse

So this is an early early access. Hopefully it’s close to early acess release

propitiouspanda@lemmy.cafe on 12 Jun 01:38 collapse

More shit I can convince my friends to buy so we can drop it 2 weeks later for the next low-effort pile of trash?

Nah, I’ll pass.
