Not surprising. Nexus mods will remove literally any mod that a company asks them to, and have done this a lot in the past.

rtxn@lemmy.world on 25 Sep 13:07 next collapse

What do you suppose they should do instead? Get sued out of existence?

simple@lemm.ee on 25 Sep 13:12 next collapse

I’m not saying they shouldn’t follow through takedown requests, just pointing it out. Nexus mods isn’t the place to put mods like this.

unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de on 25 Sep 15:02 next collapse

I doubt they could be sued over this at all.

rtxn@lemmy.world on 25 Sep 15:30 collapse

They could be, easily. Sony wouldn’t likely win, but all they really need to do is bury the operators in legal fees and subpoenas.

unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de on 25 Sep 16:04 collapse

Yeah my bad thats what i meant. They could be sued but not successfully. If the biggest modding platform doesnt fight back then there is little hope outside of decentralized platforms, but preaching to the choir on lemmy with that one…

Mango@lemmy.world on 25 Sep 16:15 collapse

Yes, and make a scene about it. Barbara Streisand.

rtxn@lemmy.world on 25 Sep 16:47 next collapse

Worked wonders for the Yuzu developers.

Mango@lemmy.world on 25 Sep 17:22 collapse

No, it worked for everyone else afterwards. Also Yuzu were being actually scummy and aren’t really a good analogy.

TachyonTele@lemm.ee on 25 Sep 14:21 collapse

The author removed it, not Nexus.

ms_lane@lemmy.world on 25 Sep 12:59 next collapse

Things that get removed by staff on nexusmods don’t show a ‘Not Found’ link or have the title renamed ‘DELETED’ - they generally show ‘removed by staff’ or ‘under moderation review since <date>’.

‘Not found’ is usually when the mod author unpublishes a mod.

This sounds like the typical mod drama, author has removed it for some reason and people are jumping to conclusions and/or the author is gaslighting people into the wrong conclusions.

kboy101222@sh.itjust.works on 25 Sep 19:27 collapse

Nexus Mods confirmed they didn’t do it

scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech on 25 Sep 13:29 next collapse

Freaking said it literally yesterday that they’d force it down, and literally yesterday someone said “there’s no way no company has taken down a mod like that”. Modders are well and good but they’re people, and whether it was the modder directly or nexus, it was only a matter of time before Sony lawyers sent a cease and desist.

I blame the news outlets for making it public and screaming from the rooftops that they were bypassing it.

So anyone have a copy saved?

Aielman15@lemmy.world on 25 Sep 13:55 next collapse

I blame the news outlets for making it public and screaming from the rooftops that they were bypassing it.

It’s not the journalists’ fault if they are informing people of the existence of something. And the idea that gamers would’ve been able to enjoy the mod without Sony noticing if journalists never spoke of it is dumb.

So anyone have a copy saved?

I’m still able to download the file from the original link.

www.nexusmods.com/godofwarragnarok/mods/22?tab=fi…

This was the original description of the mod:

Notes
This project does not touch or modify any original game code and is NOT intended to encourage the piracy.

  1. Download the latest release
  2. Copy the version.dll and PsPcSdk.dll to the game folder
  3. Enjoy!

Troubleshooting:
If you still encounter the login screen error, make sure to remove this file first:
C:\Users[Username]\Saved Games\God of War Ragnarök[AccountID]\userpreferences
Upon the first popup when it asks to link the Steam account, press “NO” button.

It’s worth mentioning that the mod could stop working with future updates of the game, however.

Draconic_NEO@lemmy.world on 26 Sep 00:44 collapse

It’s worth mentioning that the mod could stop working with future updates of the game, however.

That’s why it would be good if somebody had the source code, not just a backup of the mod. Available source code will allow somebody else to tweak it or more easily make a better one in case Sony tries to break it.

pearsaltchocolatebar@discuss.online on 25 Sep 14:28 next collapse

The author deleted it, not nexus.

scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech on 25 Sep 15:39 collapse

and whether it was the modder directly or nexus, it was only a matter of time before Sony lawyers sent a cease and desist.

TachyonTele@lemm.ee on 25 Sep 16:35 collapse

There are mods and alternate launchers that skip these things for pretty much every single player game that has launchers and sign-ins. This isn’t a new concept.

scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech on 25 Sep 18:05 collapse

and it’s not a new concept that it’s begging corporations to threaten legal action for things they don’t like

TachyonTele@lemm.ee on 25 Sep 19:01 collapse

None of these mods get sued. You can calm down on the outrage.

scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech on 25 Sep 19:09 collapse

Lol dude I’m not outraged. I’m honestly very unsurprised by their actions. I’m annoyed that people are so shocked that it happened - literally a day after it made all the gaming blogs with headlines essentially saying “Look you can give the finger to Sony with this one little mod”. Everyone laughed and said FU to Sony, and then the dev even said something stupid like “I promise never to take it down”.

Then of course So ya lawyers came in and threatened the guy. Of course they did. I am zero percent shocked they did. So he had the choice of spending 6 figures fighting them in court, or take it down. I don’t blame him at all. I eyeroll at everyone who so publicly flaunted it yesterday when it should have been a quiet passing around.

TachyonTele@lemm.ee on 25 Sep 19:54 collapse

I see what you’re saying.
The Mass Effect dll mod went through the same thing. I still have the original download just in case it got removed.
And it did.
But it was only like a week or two before it was uploaded by the author again, and it’s been up since.

Draconic_NEO@lemmy.world on 26 Sep 00:40 collapse

I blame the news outlets for making it public and screaming from the rooftops that they were bypassing it.

We should put our efforts and energy towards fighting back against the companies that do this and not against each other. Pointing fingers at each other doesn’t do anything.

These companies have their own intelligence divisions whose job it is to find out about projects like this. They don’t find out about it from the news they find out about it from their intelligence divisions long before it becomes popular.

If anything projects like this being popular is better for them because it means people like us can copy them and redistribute them faster than they can issue takedowns.

If anything I would say that this mindset is exactly what these companies want, they want these projects to be obscure and copied by very few people so when they issue the takedown, it’s not saved by anybody else. They also would prefer it over the retaliation that some people might do to them, I mean just look at what people are doing to Rockstar right now. They would rather we fight with each other, then fight back against them. They are the enemy and they always have been, the sooner we realize it the better.

From the Nexus Mods Discord:

God of War No PSN Requirement Mod

Hi <@&1116364961757790238>

We’ve had several questions from the community about the NoPSSDK mod for God of War Ragnarok which is no longer available on the site.

We would like to clarify this page was removed by the mod author and not by a member of our team.

I’ve reached out to iArtorias to find out what happened, but we suspect that Sony may have requested they remove it as they’ve deleted it from GitHub too.

Nexusmods has always been cucked about this sort of thing. I cant blame them but its still sad to see.

DarkMetatron@feddit.org on 25 Sep 15:14 next collapse

It can be made the argument that the mod is a way to circumvent copy protection and due to this in conflict with the DMCA (and all the equal laws in many other lands).
A mod like this is not the worth to go to court over, so it is only understandable that the creator has pulled it from the net the best he could. And even if Nexus had pulled the mod down over a DMCA notice nobody should blame them. We may not like the laws but Nexus Mods is bound to it.

CoolGirl586@lemmy.world on 25 Sep 15:51 collapse

Nexus Mods didn’t delete it. The creator took it down themselves.

Rekorse@sh.itjust.works on 26 Sep 10:30 collapse

I think this is a way to release it, it will get copied numerous times, and then he can shut down and avoid legal trouble.

Putting it on nexusmods was a PR stunt.

Mwa@lemm.ee on 26 Sep 08:33 collapse

i assume he got a cease and desist letter from sony

DarkMetatron@feddit.org on 26 Sep 08:58 collapse

According to public sources at Nexus Mods he has taken it down preemptively out of fear for possible consequences.
But there is always the possibility that the cease and desist letter came with a firm request to not talk about the cease and desist letter, but that is highly speculoos

The mod who bypass’ the PSN login for God of War Ragnarök got removed on Nexus Mods

That poor mod - they generously offer to go to peoples’ houses to bypass the PSN login and then get removed from the website! That’s some gratitude!

Allero@lemmy.today on 26 Sep 08:18 collapse

that

Better?

samus12345@lemmy.world on 26 Sep 13:30 collapse

Yes, and “bypasses.”

djsoren19@yiffit.net on 25 Sep 19:00 next collapse

Not too surprising, I imagine removing the PSN login was real close to just cracking the game entirely. Honestly not sure why people would buy the game and then use a third party tool to bypass the PSN requirement as opposed to just pirating the game to begin with.

NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip on 25 Sep 21:29 next collapse

I mean… it is removing DRM. It is literally a crack. It is just that people (and outlets) thought they were clever for saying “mod”.

So… the crack is down and now there is even more fuel for the “mods are bad because they are for pirates” stupidity.

AlexanderTheDead@lemmy.world on 26 Sep 09:16 collapse

I think literally 5 people in the entire universe have ever uttered anything approaching the phrase “mods are for pirates”. And you somehow encountered all 4 of the others.

Kolanaki@yiffit.net on 26 Sep 00:42 collapse

Back in the day I would use NO CD cracks for games I legit owned because I just didn’t want to have to change discs all the time when switching games.

DRM tends to negatively affect paying customers more than pirates, so I could easily see legitimate owners still using cracks to remove DRM that is causing them issues in their legally obtained game.

Laurentide@pawb.social on 26 Sep 03:30 next collapse

I made .iso files and mounted them in virtual drives to do the same thing. I could have used cracks but I didn’t want a virus and I still had the delusion that doing things “fairly” actually meant anything.

SomethingBurger@jlai.lu on 26 Sep 10:20 collapse

Some DRMs can detect ISOs, so this didn’t always work.

mholiv@lemmy.world on 26 Sep 14:19 collapse

Back in the days of windows xp and Alcohol 120% it didn’t. I remember having like 12 virtual disk drives each with an independent iso just to avoid swapping disks.

gerbler@lemmy.world on 26 Sep 22:06 collapse

When I bought Fallouts 1, 2 and Tactics from EB like 15 years ago I couldn’t run them even with the disc in the drive. The shitty securom was broken and refused to recognise the disc. It was only thanks to pirates that I was able to crack them and play the copies I fucking paid money for.

DRM is cancer.

HawlSera@lemm.ee on 26 Sep 03:44 next collapse
