The company has a price for the product, importers import the product at that price (sometimes the importer will also be the manufacturer, but that doesn’t actually make a difference as far as the calculation is concerned), then some official shows up and demands an import tariff, the important pays the tariff.
The shelf price is calculated as the total cost to the importer + a profit margin + sales tax. The tariff just gets lumped into the cost for the importer. Sales tax doesn’t make a distinction about how the price is arrived at.

Thanks Trump for adding a 145% “tax” on my electronics. How am I supposed to afford anything now!?
I wasn’t going to get one even if it was £20, but how? Trump set the tariffs. Obviously it’s going to cost a shitload more if there is a 145% tariff in the US.
It would be worth it if it cost $50. Of course it never would cost $50.
It would be worth it if it cost the same as the first switch and if the games weren’t so expensive. There is a price point at which it is actually a good value product, but it’s so far beyond that price point now, even without tariffs.
I mean, hating on Nintendo is a good idea, but their games distinctly do not suck (at least most of them). They only suck in so far as you have to pay Nintendo in some form to legally acquire and play them.
Sony: we’ll let the whole world pay astronomical amounts of money because it makes us rich! And if someone calls us on it, we’ll say it’s all because of the US!

This is an odd place to put this complaint. You clicked on a post about the Switch. Make a post about struggling with money and the discussion should focus on that instead.
And there are those who have it even harder than YOU. Everyone’s station in life is different. They are allowed to experience that.
If they are being insensitive to your concerns, then maybe they are not a good friend, but it sounds like you’re the one insensitive to their concerns. You can both have different concerns.
Also this is literally a Switch post in a gaming community amd you self selected this complaint in here. It’s telling.
And there are those who have it even harder than YOU. Everyone’s station in life is different. They are allowed to experience that.
I’ve never understand the logic of the people who espouse that line of thinking. Is only the one single person alive who has it the literal worst out of all the billions of living human beings allowed to feel bad, and everyone else is obliged to look at them and say “well it could technically be worse so I guess I’m not allowed to feel bad”?
I think you’re taking the meaning too far. It’s not that someone in a bad position is not allowed to feel bad. Rather, you have to consider the context in each case. A friend could be having a hard time, and even if your situation is technically worse, that doesn’t invalidate theirs. Because if you are willing to invalidate your friend’s difficulties, by that same token you could say your own are invalidated by those in an even worse position than yours.
Essentially I’m saying that everyone’s life is different and their worries are valid. Yes, perhaps it can be a touch tone-deaf for one person in a privileged position to complain about something relatively trivial. But for someone to assert that their situation is infinitely more important, and that their friend shouldn’t be allowed to complain about their own experiences… it reeks of envy and narcissism.

And then you throw in the games… which Nintendo conveniently left out prices of for us (they did list the bundle though, so I’m extrapolating from that). But why expensive? It’s 30$ more than the steam deck and has much more power
It’s not more powerful than the steam deck.
The steam deck is a portable computer the switch can only play switch games. Those games are hugely expensive, and the price is controlled by nintendo who infamously never decrease their game prices even after 10 years.
I’m going to save so much money by not going to the US to buy one of those… I wonder what I’ll do with all that wealth.
Atleast this will radicalize the youth.
If Nintendo sues the Trump admin I’d have to finally side with Nintendo on a lawsuit.
i didn’t think I’ll ever see those sequence of words
Nintendo: “We also had to raise the price of digital games to $200.”
“But tariffs don’t apply to digital games.”
Nintendo: “Ah, yeah. Well, whenever you notice something like that, tariffs did it.”
“But why does the rest of the world have to pay the price, too?”
Nintendo: “TARIFFS!”
You‘re joking about it. I can hear the faint beeping of some LLM waiting to serve this to someone in power.
Tangential but was at the hospital for an Endo appointment with my son and chuckled in our waiting room “I bet there’s an old white guy in a suit right now going ‘but what if we made these waiting rooms smaller?’”
Note. Room was already small.
These tariffs shouldn’t be 145% of the retail price, they should be 145% of the wholesale price.
Well you see…
"never let a good tragedy go to waste"
Truly proof that gamers are the most oppressed people, its so joever /s
With innocent people being illegally abducted and wrongfully deported to El Salvador, I am astounded that there is so much concern about the Nintendo Switch 2. Seriously people!! Where are the priorities? WTF?!
“But that only effects those people… What about me!?”
You think gamers care about that 💀
If the past few years have taught me ANYTHING, it’s that at least half the “gamers” are cheering the deportations on, so uh, yeah, anyway…
My understanding is this has been the price of thousands of gaming communities enacting a “No politics” rule - people want to keep it external.
“This fucking piece of actual trash! He’s using the most broken character this game has ever put out, and trash talking over it like he’s ever fucked a woman. Literally eat a dick. What do you think, chat?…Oh. Holy shit. Sorry, I just saw some stuff about Trump, listen, I’m sorry, but we don’t talk politics here. It can get really toxic.”
Like it or not (I do not), the most important determining factor in American elections is people’s feelings about the economy. The horrors being done by our government are easy to turn a blind eye to. But the cost of living is something that can’t be avoided or suppressed.
Economic ruin is how we beat these motherfuckers.
.
Some non-zero percent of people think the trafficking is fake news. Harder to disbelieve a cost you pay yourself.
Others might think it’s normal deportation of undesirables. Harder to ignore something that affects you and yours.
How does people being wrongfully deported to El Salvador relate to a gaming community?
You’ll find that out when they come deport you.
On Americans only? Right? 😟
I would assume so, yea. They had stopped pre-orders in the US only when the tariffs were announced.
