Oh, nice. I played 1 and 2 way back.

My tv came with this 3D feature that never saw any use except for that one time when I found out that Crysis 2 supports it. I should try that again, if I can just find those stupid glasses.

northernlights@lemmy.today on 06 Oct 15:21 collapse

wow never heard of that

janewaydidnothingwrong@lemmy.world on 06 Oct 15:40 collapse

the 3d tv’s were a super quick fad that went away in favor of uhd, hdr, and 4k i believe

entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org on 06 Oct 15:47 next collapse

You’re correct. Projectors still mostly support 3D, so if you’re into 3D that’s the best way to watch stuff or game in 3D nowadays, outside of VR headsets, of course.

rollin@piefed.social on 07 Oct 01:05 collapse

Projectors still mostly support 3D

These require glasses I assume?
I’m one of the few people who actually love 3D for movies. I’d heard of the TVs but not projectors. I’d watch all movies in 3D if I could, particularly on a large screen like a projector’s. It’s especially great IMO for movies with lots of computer-generated effects - I saw the first Avatar in 3D at an IMAX and it was amazing.

entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org on 07 Oct 01:34 collapse

Yeah. Generally for 3D you’ll want a DLP projector, plus active shutter glasses. They still make the glasses, you can pick them up on Amazon. They go for about $20 per pair.

The magic words to search for are “DLP 3D glasses” ideally you want ones that support 144Hz, but most of them do. 144Hz in 3D comes out to 3 flashes per eye, per frame, at 24fps, which generally will give you the smoothest experience. For 60fps content like video games it should go down to 120Hz, which is still one flash per eye per frame.

rollin@piefed.social on 07 Oct 23:57 collapse

Thanks for the info. I’ll look into that. The issue with shutter glasses is, in addition to the wire, the fact that you are only seeing every other frame, alternating in each eye, making the image appear at half brightness. Still workable though, if you’re a 3D fan like me. I had a pair of shutter glasses ages ago, when Nvidia drivers used to support them - you could turn any DirectX game into 3D. VR has surpassed that now, by a long shot. I’ll def look into the projector though, it sounds more practical for watching movies with more than one person.

entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org on 08 Oct 00:21 collapse

The DLP shutter glasses are wireless, for what it’s worth. The projector inserts solid red frames to for the glasses to sync to.

markz@suppo.fi on 06 Oct 15:54 collapse

Yeah. Mine is from the tail end of that, and is also uhd. It’s also supposed to be smart, but in reality it doesn’t do much, which I’m thankful for.

janewaydidnothingwrong@lemmy.world on 06 Oct 19:41 collapse

That sounds pretty cool actually

markz@suppo.fi on 06 Oct 19:56 collapse

Not running android or some other bullshit really makes it worth its weight in gold.

ampersandrew@lemmy.world on 06 Oct 15:24 next collapse

Worth noting that the remastered versions have no multiplayer. There’s no bringing back multiplayer for Crysis 2 and 3, but the original Cryis Warhead is still available on GOG, where you can play old-school Crysis Wars multiplayer via LAN.

abfarid@startrek.website on 06 Oct 15:30 next collapse

Warhead was like Crysis 1.5, actually. But I have tried playing the original Crysis online a couple years ago and it’s possible. Not super convenient, but possible.

ampersandrew@lemmy.world on 06 Oct 15:36 collapse

For a game that old, “possible” is totally acceptable. I tested it on two PCs of mine on a LAN, and it works just fine.

abfarid@startrek.website on 06 Oct 16:37 collapse

I wasn’t talking about LAN but playing online on public servers. And I wasn’t saying it as a bad thing, just tempering expectations. Iirc, you have to patch the game, then create an account for the GameSpy replacement. There were some stability issues, too, but if you find a decent server it was ok.

But after all of that the main issue was, of course, lack of players.

ampersandrew@lemmy.world on 06 Oct 16:41 collapse

Oh, for me, “online” is playing via VPN or direct IP connection with friends.

MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 06 Oct 15:45 next collapse

Oh dang now I want to get a group together for that, I loved crysis multiplayer

hark@lemmy.world on 08 Oct 03:07 collapse

It’s too bad the servers aren’t still up. I loved Crysis Wars.

ICastFist@programming.dev on 06 Oct 15:32 next collapse

A cherry on top would be if the announcement was “Now your PC can run Crysis”

dalekcaan@feddit.nl on 06 Oct 17:02 next collapse

But can it run Crysis remastered?

PerfectDark@lemmy.world on 06 Oct 21:20 collapse

They kinda did when they shared the posts on social media earlier:

Can your PC run this news? ;)

Zephorah@discuss.online on 06 Oct 15:38 next collapse

Any media we can own outright is a win.

Infrapink@thebrainbin.org on 06 Oct 20:34 next collapse

So weird to think that Crysis is retro now.

WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world on 07 Oct 01:42 collapse

It’s also playable now

tuckerm@feddit.online on 06 Oct 22:05 next collapse

Nice, glad to hear that the original, non-remastered Crysis is available! If I remember right, Crysis Remastered is actually an update to the console port of Crysis, and the console versions simplified how your powers activate, making it easier to do on a controller.

ampersandrew@lemmy.world on 06 Oct 22:13 collapse

I haven’t checked in on this, as I’ve only ever played the original version of the game, but I heard the console port also cut out the VTOL level toward the end of the game, because they just couldn’t get it running. Hopefully it’s retained in the modern remasters, as I love that level.

moosetwin@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 07 Oct 01:14 next collapse

crysis remastered? does it have lower system requirements than the original?

TachyonTele@piefed.social on 07 Oct 02:11 next collapse

Gotta get that Switch port working somehow

BurgerBaron@piefed.social on 07 Oct 02:27 collapse

Nope higher. Especially if you enable ray tracing which was added.

IPC single thread performance matters most for Crysis because their complex AI especially is single threaded IIRC. Remastered didn’t do anything about that.

RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world on 08 Oct 02:25 collapse

I’m sure it can run this news. I’m still not sure it can run Crysis.
