“I’ll soon birth thee anew.” — Alex Garland

Noerknhar@feddit.org on 23 May 10:57 next collapse

I’m sure they’ll fuck it up.

Name one good (serious) videogame movie. One.

simple@lemm.ee on 23 May 11:05 next collapse

The original Mortal Kombat movie. The newest Sonic movie was also pretty good imo.

But yes, this can probably go very wrong.

simulacra_procession@lemmy.today on 24 May 15:36 collapse

Lol it may be an unpopular opinion but I don’t think we can call mortal Kombat objectively ‘good.’ It’s a cult classic for sure and a fun watch, but for reference it aired at Quakecon’s Master Pancake sat night event one year with the MST3K folks and well… they don’t typically do blockbuster hits

aliceblossom@lemmy.world on 23 May 12:11 next collapse

Normally I’d agree, but it being A24 makes me very hopeful.

dellish@lemmy.world on 23 May 12:42 next collapse

Street Fighter. It’s fantastically bad.

GamingChairModel@lemmy.world on 23 May 12:58 next collapse

It’s not a movie, but the Fallout series had a great first season, and I’m looking forward to the second.

trungulox@lemm.ee on 23 May 16:18 collapse

The last of us was great too. Not a movie still. But .

ScoobyDoo27@lemm.ee on 25 May 02:01 collapse

Season 1 was good. Season 2 is pretty terrible.

trungulox@lemm.ee on 25 May 12:05 collapse

Haven’t seen season 2 yet That’s disappointing

Regrettable_incident@lemmy.world on 23 May 13:03 next collapse

Alex Garland has made some pretty good movies, so there’s a chance. I thought his instincts with annihilation were pretty much spot on. But yeah, movies based on games do not have a great track record.

ogeist@lemmy.world on 23 May 13:24 next collapse

I wonder it is going to be THE Elden Ring story or An Elden Ring story, a small contained story in the Elden Ring world could fly really well, bonus points if Patches kicks the protagonist off a cliff.

hypnicjerk@lemmy.world on 23 May 13:33 collapse

my preference would be a film about the shattering, giving us some (but not too much) more insight into just what fucked the world up so godsdamned much.

but that would need to be extremely faithful to the lore and character designs and i just don’t see hollywood showing up for that.

Bob_Robertson_IX@discuss.tchncs.de on 23 May 13:46 next collapse

First, it’s A24 and they put out amazing movies .

Second, Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario Bros Movie, and I’m not sure if it would count, but Wreck It Ralph are all good video game movies.

dubyakay@lemmy.ca on 23 May 13:58 next collapse

Super Mario Bros. (1993) was a cult classic.

The 2023 movie is forgettable garbage.

The Sonic movies are fun though. Knuckles TV as well.

PapstJL4U@lemmy.world on 23 May 18:11 collapse

The Hoper Mario is something - it’s so off the rails, that it’s crusing on anothet track.

samus12345@lemm.ee on 23 May 17:36 next collapse

Wreck It Ralph doesn’t count because it wasn’t based on an actual video game, but on video games in general. But it was indeed great.

Bob_Robertson_IX@discuss.tchncs.de on 24 May 01:13 collapse

I don’t know, just because the video game isn’t real doesn’t mean that the movie isn’t based off of a video game. I think it just shows that the reason most video game movies fail isn’t because the movie is bad, but because the fans are too harsh. If Wreck It Ralph replaced the main characters with characters from Mario but still had the same basic plot I don’t think it would have been as well received.

WhatsTheHoldup@lemmy.ml on 24 May 10:20 collapse

You just listed a bunch of animated children’s movies?

If you’re looking for actual examples there’s Silent Hill, Fallout, or The Last of Us.

Bob_Robertson_IX@discuss.tchncs.de on 24 May 13:35 collapse

I don’t think I’d consider Detective Pikachu or Sonic to be animated. Just like I wouldn’t consider Fallout or Last of Us to be movies.

OmegaMan@lemmings.world on 23 May 12:15 next collapse

Does Last of Us count? Sonic movies and Mario were pretty decent too.

SomethingBurger@jlai.lu on 23 May 14:20 next collapse

Silent Hill

samus12345@lemm.ee on 23 May 17:35 collapse

That one got a lot of hate, but I actually liked it. Not so much the second one, though.

Goronmon@lemmy.world on 23 May 15:09 next collapse

Its funny in this case because not “fucking it up” effectively means making a movie that’s barely related to the game outside of the basic setting.

SchwertImStein@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 24 May 08:52 collapse

WoW, Prince of Persia

Spacehooks@reddthat.com on 23 May 11:56 next collapse

There is a plot?

Iheartcheese@lemmy.world on 24 May 06:56 collapse

This noob missed the plot.

Git gud.

Spacehooks@reddthat.com on 24 May 09:04 collapse

Never played. I always thought it had horrible story telling intentionally. From soft games feel like reading a redacted report.

codexarcanum@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 23 May 12:29 next collapse

Can you make a movie out of pure lore? Maybe a prequel, like The Fall of Hoarah Loux or Ranni’s Rebellion? Will the audience be required to parry things?

dogslayeggs@lemmy.world on 23 May 14:32 next collapse

Sorry, best we can do is having the audience dodge roll every scene.

PapstJL4U@lemmy.world on 23 May 18:13 collapse

Didnt the John Wick movies usee the role effect? Using this one to introduce the dodge role would be funny.

lorty@lemmy.ml on 24 May 16:26 collapse

If I were tasked with this project I’d probably make the plot about Vyke. It would mirror the tarnished"s journey enough.

codexarcanum@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 28 May 00:36 collapse

This is pretty smart! The “twist” ending of him going chaos darksided (for love!) would be great!

ZeroHora@lemmy.ml on 23 May 13:12 next collapse

Video game movies have a chance of being good, they are almost always trash with a slim chance of being good. For a game with a lot of lore and no plot, the chance of being good is close to zero.

Maybe a miracle will happen.

trungulox@lemm.ee on 23 May 16:17 next collapse

I’m cautiously optimistic. The lack of a plot in the game leaves a lot of creative room for the film and the deep lore gives them a lot to work with. Also it’s Alex garland and a24 so like. I’m in.

ZeroHora@lemmy.ml on 23 May 19:48 collapse

The lack of a plot in the game leaves a lot of creative room for the film and the deep lore gives them a lot to work with.

But also adds more chance of the movie to fuck up the lore for the sake of the movie’s plot.

trungulox@lemm.ee on 24 May 10:02 collapse

It could absolutely be a dumpster fire but I trust a24 to not fuck it up. They have a great track record and I think the whole minimalist storytelling thing is right in their wheelhouse. Time will tell though.

BleatingZombie@lemmy.world on 23 May 17:20 collapse

I think about this a lot

I love the idea of media expanding on the lore, but needing to insert a plot could ruin it

My only “solution” is a TV series instead of a movie and every episode should be a separate story

darthelmet@lemmy.world on 23 May 13:50 next collapse

What… uh… I can’t imagine this movie being weird enough to feel like a movie based on a FROMSOFT game while still being accessible to the wide audience needed for a big budget fantasy movie to make money.

[deleted] on 23 May 14:02 collapse

.

selokichtli@lemmy.ml on 23 May 14:08 next collapse

I kind of hate Elden Ring. I’ve played plenty of these games, but I’ve died easily like 2 or 3 times more here. And, more often than ever, I don’t know what to do next, which is easily compensated with another couple of deaths. Nah, I will never watch this.

darkstar@sh.itjust.works on 25 May 15:41 collapse

Okay

selokichtli@lemmy.ml on 25 May 21:26 collapse

Yeah!

SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world on 23 May 16:09 next collapse

Hope they make something trippy like The Green Knight

MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world on 23 May 17:02 next collapse

“A24” is the only thing here that gives me a tiny bit of hope.

Holyginz@lemmy.world on 23 May 17:10 next collapse

I really wish studios would just start hiring writters and making original content. Im so bored of everything being ripped from other media.

FunnyUsername@lemmy.world on 23 May 20:54 next collapse

i agree i immediately do not care about franchise products these days

Holyginz@lemmy.world on 25 May 20:20 collapse

And it isn’t that i dont end up liking the media they pull the material from. Its that they just start shoveling these movies out and it feels like there’s no actual “love” put into the process, its just trying to make as much money as humanely possible.

embed_me@programming.dev on 24 May 13:54 collapse

Take any trending media in the public consciousness and make a movie based on it. Minecraft, mario, whatever blah blah blah. I’m sick of it all. Don’t disturb me I’ll be napping

PapstJL4U@lemmy.world on 23 May 18:17 next collapse

Doing Edge of Tomorrow style Progression where one actor plays different classes and steadily progresses could be an option. Explore the world from a changing perspective.

wabafee@lemmy.world on 24 May 06:48 next collapse

Personally I’m keeping my expectations low on this one. Game adaption to movie seem to always go to shit. Though personally would love a movie about the Bloodborne universe. I imagine a horror mystery movie about it.

RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world on 24 May 17:29 next collapse

Chris Pratt already announced to play Melina.

Kolanaki@pawb.social on 25 May 02:04 next collapse

I have no faith that Hollywood will be able to actually capture the soul of the game’s world and story. It’s gonna be full of exposition.

overload@sopuli.xyz on 25 May 13:01 collapse

Alex Garland is a pretty good director. Ex Machina is one of my favourite films and Annihilation was a demonstration that he isn’t so tied down by the source media, but does capture the spiritual essence of a book adaptation, at least.

He’s a pretty proven writer and director and has written for video games before (DMC 2013). Elden Ring as a universe has a lot of interesting angles you could approach a story from. I think as an action souls game adaptation , it will be hard to avoid trying to please the two groups of people: one that wants a compelling narrative and another that just wants to see a big boss fight on screen.
