Baldur’s Gate 3 is an incredible role-playing game experience, a gift for RPG fans and a wonderful introduction to the genre for newcomers. It’s got everything a good RPG needs: memorable characters, exciting, strategic battles, and a textured world to get lost in as your party goes questing across the map. It’s a showcase for just how good RPGs are when they really connect, and fortunately for us, there’s plenty more where that came from.
So, in the event that Baldur’s Gate 3 has inspired you to explore the genre further, here’s a list of games that similarly nail the RPG experience in ways that will leave you itching to get back to the character you’ve created — provided, of course, you didn’t immediately roll a new one to take into Baldur’s Gate 3 all over again.

About the level of writing I’ve come to expect from a listicle, but I take particular issue with the fact that they list Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 as separate items but clump the three Dragon Age games together into one, when the Dragon Age games have much more variation between each game than the POE games do.
Yeah that blanket rec for Dragon Age is kind of not great, especially since I don’t think 2 in particular is very similar to BG.
I haven’t played 3, but yeah I’d agree with that. DA:O is basically the source of the formula used to make BG3
How can one talk about Disco Elysium without mentioning the writing even once
They mentioned Divinity: Original Sin 2 which is no surprise. I couldn’t be bothered to finish Act 2. It’s unforgiving, takes a very long time and becomes a bit stale after a while. I know it wasn’t that way for most players. But I fear I’d have the same sentiment with Baldur’s Gate 3.
No mention of Pathfinder? I was playing Wrath of the Righteous right before BG3 and it makes BG3 seem so tiny(mechanics wise) in comparison.
I was disappointed by the lack of Pathfinder. To the point where I think this author isn’t credible.
BG3 is a much prettier game. And by a lot.
But the Pathfinder games are a more immersive adventure.
Disappointed not to see Jade Empire on the list. Some of the best party interactions ever
Best ending dialogue to a video game ever.
“It’s time to punch a mountain… Into space!”
If not for Planescape being on there I would have assumed they meant only more recent games. No Jade Empire. No KOTOR. Not even Neverwinter Nights or Fallout 1 & 2 or Icewind Dale. Let alone all the classic SSI Goldbox games or even Bard’s Tale (the original from the 80’s not that shit on Xbox).
