Disclaimer: I changed a little the layout and thanks for the contributions!

The Idea:

On my old Mastodon Profile i’ve made a list of Rebuilds/Fan Remakes/SourcePorts (when possible opensource, no commercial remakes) for old PC Games, and i want to share it here on Lemmy too, so people can easily find it.

Why?

I’ve played lot of these games, and i’m glad there a Fans who still working on these games, to make it accessible on modern systems and giving them some QoL improvments. In my opinion, that’s a great way to preserve old games from being forgotten and keep playable for new players. Also these people need some recognition (at least) for their hard work.

I’m glad If you help to complete this list and contribute some games you know.

In the moment there are alphabetical sorted:

  • 68 PC Games in total
  • 53 Remakes, SourcePorts etc.

New additions will be marked with *

The List:

There is also the List here osgameclones.com, who did unknown to me the same.

Addendum SCUMMVM:

SCUMMVM is the first place for adventure games from Lucas Arts (Monkey Island etc.) or Sierra (Kings Quest etc) anf for the RPGs from Origin (Ultima VI), Westwood (Eye of the Beholder) and New World Compting (Might and Magic I, III and IV), but also many more. Here you can check the list of games out.

Addendum “Inspired Games”

I think that games divergence too much from the original games, but also should be mentioned.

Addendum Console Games:

If you are looking for Ports for Console Games to PC here is this list on GitHub

Also i would recommend the Open Source Port of the First two Jake and Daxter games

Addendum Source Ports for Android

moonpiedumplings made a list of Source Ports for Android on reddit

Ohh, saved for later, saw a few i was too young to play effectively on my 3/486 at that age. Thank you

I just started playing Dark Forces again, had no idea there is a way to modernize it, thanks for sharing!

OTINOKTYAH@feddit.org on 20 May 13:06 next collapse

Glad that it can help you :) Have fun with Dark Forces!

bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de on 20 May 14:07 collapse

There’s even an official remaster on GOG and Steam. I heard that its assets even work with the open source engine.

ddash@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 20 May 15:03 next collapse

I know, just didn’t feel like buying it. Even with a discount it felt expensive when I already own the original.

bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de on 20 May 15:05 collapse

Me too. I’m waiting for it to go below 10 or maybe even 5 €.

ddash@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 20 May 15:07 collapse

It is on my wishlist for that reason :D

But maybe if this fan project works well enough I’ll take it off.

ddash@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 20 May 19:22 collapse

Dude, I just installed The Force Engine on my Steamdeck, found a good write-up how to do that via the flatpak the project now offers. It’s fantastic, looks so much better and plays very smooth! And since you point it to the current game directory I could even continue my progress from the original game!

Midnitte@beehaw.org on 20 May 13:11 next collapse

There’s also Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, and the community developed version

OTINOKTYAH@feddit.org on 20 May 13:14 collapse

You are right, i forgot this one too! Thanks for pointing that out :)

Savage : The Battle of Newerth - SavageXR

This was such a great RTS/FPS hybrid at the time. I looked for RTS/FPS games a couple of years ago when I remembered it, and the genre is all but dead. I did spend a lot of time playing Silica though, which is still in early access. I haven’t checked in on that in a while now though.

<img alt="Fools Rush In" src="https://www.freem.ne.jp/win/game/15082"> appears to be a fannish remake of the PC-98-only versus STG Touhou Yumeijikū ~ Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream, for modern computer systems, released around 2017, though it's a bit jank on the gameplay side of things. Caught wind of it from a couple Jaimers vids on this a while back.

Kory@lemmy.ml on 21 May 07:42 next collapse

This is great, thank you so much. Saved so I can add something if I come across anything you hadn’t covered yet.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some gaming to do!

OTINOKTYAH@feddit.org on 21 May 07:57 collapse

Have fun :) and Tell me, If you run into troubles or else, so if it’s not working i’ll add this to the list. What game you are starting?

Kory@lemmy.ml on 21 May 09:50 collapse

I’ll sure try Diablo, I totally forgot about that. Having played Diablo 2 Resurrected recently, that fits. Also want to try that Lego game, never heard about it, but it looks fun. And maybe some Icewind Dale, but not sure how that holds up :)

Mechanized Assault and eXploration (M.A.X.) - Mechanized Assault and eXploration Reloaded

Disclosure: That’s my baby. We’re not very active any more and while we were self hosted for a decade the development shifted to GitHub recently: github.com/maxr-dot-org/maxr/releases (I know but I don’t have the spoons for this any more so the active devs got to decide)

OTINOKTYAH@feddit.org on 21 May 08:22 collapse

that’s awesome! I only played m.a.x. 2 in my childhood but i’ll take a look on that. Can i add it to the list?

bekopharm@discuss.tchncs.de on 21 May 10:06 collapse

It’s FOSS, of course you can 🤓 Fun fact: Most MAX players hate MAX2 to this day. The disappointment is similar to studios getting bought up by EA.

bl4kers@beehaw.org on 21 May 08:33 next collapse

Huge +1 recommendation for Manic Miners. Functionally a 1:1 remake with everything you could ask for and more- lots of settings, remastered levels, and a level builder. The (solo) dev got hired by Lego’s video game division afterwards

Kissaki@beehaw.org on 21 May 12:42 next collapse

You title them ports or remakes - do these all require the original game asset files?

When I read remake, I thought they’d be independent games, inspired by or replicating the originals.

Is it mixed? That info would be helpful for a list and an overview. For most, I wouldn’t have any assets.

jansk@beehaw.org on 21 May 20:36 next collapse

For Total Annhialation section: zero-k.info

Zero Knhas been in active dev much longer than BAR, is more mature, has a well-established little cult community, and IMO is the better game. And still OSS ofc.

morbidcactus@lemmy.ca on 21 May 23:04 next collapse

Should add eduke32 (that’s the repo, site here) for Duke Nukem 3D, believe Ion Fury (which is phenomenal) is built on that, think I’ve seen mention of it working with other build engine games, I’ve used with assets from world tour, it’s a better experience imo.

Gzdoom has some great games built on the engine too (bit of a tangent), Selaco and Hedon both fantastic games.

WorldlyCaregiver@beehaw.org on 29 May 08:49 collapse

For Panzer General (and Allied General) there’s Panzer General Forever. (The developer of this remake later started his own company and developed Panzer Corps, a spiritual successor to Panzer General).
