While we’re on the topic: any good NAS hardware recommendation?

XenGi@lemmy.chaos.berlin on 06 Mar 2024 10:48 next collapse

Synology usually just works. If you ask for a diy build, you have to be more specific.

Any chromebox can be used for this. You can grab one for cheap from businesses that have decommissioned them

possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip on 06 Mar 2024 15:19 collapse

Unless you want to store your data… Chromeboxes are not known for being expandable

Loucypher@lemmy.ml on 06 Mar 2024 18:08 collapse

Huh actually yes, I have one with TrueNAS on and have created a couple of Zvol connected over USB. It is not like having a big server but it does the job while using little power

possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip on 06 Mar 2024 18:40 collapse

Interesting. It is not recommended that you use USB drives for ZFS but it sounds like it is working for you.

Loucypher@lemmy.ml on 07 Mar 2024 08:02 collapse

Perfect is the enemy of good. TrueNAS has been happy and running non stop for 6 months now

someonesmall@lemmy.ml on 06 Mar 2024 11:39 next collapse

It highly depends on your requirements.

SatyrSack@lemmy.one on 06 Mar 2024 17:09 collapse

Low power usage, storage/memory expandability

Check out Wolfgang’s Channel on YouTube. He goes very in depth on low power consumption home servers.

Old Proliant cube servers

Anything you can find 2nd hand cheap with a bunch of SATA ports and at least a gigabit LAN

makingStuffForFun@lemmy.ml on 06 Mar 2024 17:44 collapse

Oh man. I’m still on 5 and terrified to upgrade.

warmaster@lemmy.world on 07 Mar 2024 23:22 collapse

Have you faced any issues upgrading past versions ?

makingStuffForFun@lemmy.ml on 09 Mar 2024 08:54 collapse

I’ve never upgraded. I’ll have to bite the bullet at some stage

rambos@lemm.ee on 06 Mar 2024 11:15 next collapse

Is this not for debian 11?

someonesmall@lemmy.ml on 06 Mar 2024 11:39 collapse

No, its based on Debian 12 (bookworm)

rambos@lemm.ee on 06 Mar 2024 13:51 collapse

Ok thank you

tmjaea@lemmy.world on 06 Mar 2024 17:08 collapse

Anyone tried upgrading from 6.0?

Potajito@feddit.ch on 06 Mar 2024 17:47 next collapse

Yeah no issues for me. Just ran the script to upgrade and reboot. All plugins are also working.

PainInTheAES@lemmy.world on 10 Mar 2024 01:09 collapse

Yeah I upgraded my Odroid and ran into some issues with Armbian but I was able to work through it thanks to this post. I guess Armbian broke the repos a little and it prevented OMV from cleanly auto updating with the script.
