why can't I edit hue, brightness, contrast and other video effects with vlc 3.0.20 on debian 12.5?

how do I start looking for the package I need?

This happens with some mkv files and to all mp4 files I play, both with apt and flatpak installed vlc versions.

this never happened on the same computer with xubuntu 23.10

I don’t know the answer offhand, but one thing I would do is see whether Mpv is equally effected. By default, the number keys 1-8 will control those settings.

thanks, now I know how to play with mpv.

However, each time I close the program, changes I made to those settings are lost. Is this how mpv works?

You can set the default brightness in mpv in ~/.config/mpv/mpv.conf like this:

brightness=-10

Look in the manpage (man mpv) for other settings. I think any option like –brightness=-10 can also be put into mpv.conf by removing the at the beginning.

I don’t know if there’s a way to make mpv autosave this.

Can you check what video driver you are using? You might be on some kind of software renderer.

What does

glxinfo | grep renderer

say?

merompetehla@lemmy.ml on 12 Jun 13:55 collapse

that command returns

GLX_MESA_copy_sub_buffer, GLX_MESA_query_renderer, GLX_MESA_swap_control, GLX_MESA_copy_sub_buffer, GLX_MESA_query_renderer, GLX_MESA_swap_control, Extended renderer info (GLX_MESA_query_renderer): OpenGL renderer string: Mesa Intel® HD Graphics 620 (KBL GT2)

This looks good.

I don’t know how to figure out on vlc what sort of output method, codec, or hardware acceleration it’s currently using, so I second the other person who recommended mpv.
