A quick question

Would you guys be interested if I start a Youtube/PeerTube Channel where I talk about Unix Topics related to Linux, BSD & Plan9 etc… and perhaps rants and rambles about stuff that I like and don’t like about how the mainstream treats linux etc etc. (I have a lot to talk about and say) and perhaps devlog updates about a game I’m making (its open source obviously) I don’t wanna look like a stupid influencer shill (nobody likes those) but basically I just want a platform where I can speak about what I like and passionate about thats too long to write here, and if a mod/admin is reading this please delete this if its unsuitable for this thread, sorry in advance.

There’s a ton of linux rant channels with a following, so there is a market for them

Ace120C@sopuli.xyz on 04 May 16:48 collapse

I don’t wanna copy them, I have other topics I think they are untouched and it would be nice to start a conversation about them. for example “why the normies complain about the proprietary apps they use but then when you suggest something better they just brush it off” (“I hate facebook messenger, its buggy as hell”, “try signal then”, “no.”) thats one example of the stuff I will cover, basically very obscure topics, that nobody have covered yet

HumanPenguin@feddit.uk on 05 May 09:26 collapse

I hate facebook messenger, its buggy as hell”, “try signal then”, “no.

If your goal is to rant about these people. Yep you may have an audience. Not me I’m a very old user who just doesn’t find much of the modern arguments interesting. Unless they relate to actual changes in how Linux works.

If on the other hand your goal is to change minds. Then taking an in-depth approach to how to use alternatives will both help more. And get you more viewers looking to change.

I’d also subscribe and point friends and family to useful vids.

You’ll only know if you do it. If you stick to it, improve it and evaluate it every now and then

Ace120C@sopuli.xyz on 04 May 16:52 collapse

Alright then I’ll try to post smth, and see if you guys like it or smth idk

kalipixel@reddthat.com on 04 May 16:51 next collapse

You can try and later post peertube/youtube link. Nobody can really guarantee that it will be interesting for them until they see it.

Ace120C@sopuli.xyz on 04 May 16:53 collapse

Fair enough then, thanks

just_another_person@lemmy.world on 04 May 16:53 next collapse

Would you have a specific angle or interesting take on anything? If it’s just recapping the week’s news, I think you’ll have a hard time gaining an audience.

Ace120C@sopuli.xyz on 04 May 16:58 collapse

yes! very obscure topics and basically things that are not talked about a lot if at all!

FilthyHands@sh.itjust.works on 04 May 17:37 next collapse

The niche tech channels I tend to like the most seem to do one of two things, sometimes both. They go deep into history of obscure topics, or they use old tech in a novel way. If you can do either or both, I would probably subscribe.

Ace120C@sopuli.xyz on 04 May 17:50 collapse

I see, that’s fair, thanks for the input though appreciate it!

FilthyHands@sh.itjust.works on 04 May 18:00 collapse

If you post anything, I will check it out!

Ace120C@sopuli.xyz on 04 May 18:14 collapse

thanks!

solrize@lemmy.world on 04 May 20:49 next collapse

Start a blog instead. I’d rather read it than listen to someone babbling.

Ace120C@sopuli.xyz on 04 May 23:16 collapse

already have one in the works actually!

Fizz@lemmy.nz on 04 May 22:42 next collapse

Yeah 100%

Ace120C@sopuli.xyz on 04 May 23:17 collapse

sure!

Fizz@lemmy.nz on 05 May 04:10 collapse

Can you give us a channel to follow?

Ace120C@sopuli.xyz on 05 May 07:50 collapse

sure uhhhh Ace120C, there is just 1 video on it tho youtube.com/@ace120c

SupremeDonut@lemmy.ml on 05 May 07:06 next collapse

Thats not how this works, you tell me what I want and then I complain about it in some way before ultimately caving in cause everyone else seems to be doing it

onlinepersona@programming.dev on 05 May 12:50 next collapse

If it’s on peertube, I might follow it. On YouTube, even if I watched it, it’d be through yt-dlp and thus no views for you (at least not officially).

Ace120C@sopuli.xyz on 05 May 13:43 collapse

well I’m not even going to monetize it I think, so feel free to watch it anyway you want

ocean@lemmy.selfhostcat.com on 05 May 14:49 next collapse

There are 1000 of those channels. Best to start it then share. Also, you have a blog in the works? A blog takes one day to setup. I would make some stuff before you start asking about interest. It sounds fun! Just do it

Ace120C@sopuli.xyz on 05 May 16:13 collapse

I do but it’s incomplete, I’m still writing some piece of content on it but feels free to stop by: ace120c.neocities.org

hobbsc@lemmy.sdf.org on 05 May 15:03 next collapse

just send it.

l3enc@lemmy.zip on 05 May 15:22 next collapse

you should definetly start a peertube channel, that platform really needs more quality content. let me know if you do and i’ll check some of your videos out :)

gronjo45@lemm.ee on 05 May 16:38 next collapse

Sounds great to add your own take on Unix topics. I really enjoy well-curated channels that go through more niche topics.

Maybe some older history on peripheral driver development? How bus bit size, limitations of programming language semantics… Why certain design patterns were chosen due to contemporary technologies…

I’d imagine with how small memory was back in the day, that it would be very informative to those who did not grow up with a 90s supercomputer on their desktop.

Ptsf@lemmy.world on 14 May 21:45 collapse

With stuff like this dude, nobody can tell you if the end result will be desirable. You just have to create for the sake of creating what you want to make, and release it into the world. If it doesn’t do well, take the feedback on why and improve, or halt doing it, depending on what you’d prefer.
