Nice tips! Personally will use SSH aliases and canonicalised hostnames.

Other topics covered in post:
- Forward Yubikey Agent
- Reuse connections
- SSH straight into tmux
- Alias commonly used hosts
- Do not add testing stuff to ~/.ssh/known_hosts
- Make connections last longer
- Canonicalize hostnames
- Yubikey and GitHub, without touching it every time

  • sshfs (mount a remote file system locally)
  • sshuttle (tunnel your traffic over SSH, ephemeral VPN)
  • mirror a remote port to a local port (I use this to manage syncthing on my server)

You can route things over ssh like RDP for example. Used that a few times to remote in too a desktop at home. Can’t install a VPN on most company and school devices. But ssh is build in to windows.

My favorite (aside from tunneling) has been using ssh as a SOCKS proxy.

Combine with “foxyproxy” to send all non-corporate-Internet" connections over your own ssh tunnel to keep personal web traffic private or to access services on your home network without needing a vpn.

If you use Windows, I highly recommend trying Mobaxterm.
