The Distro Wars are good actually.?

If all the seemingly pointless discussions about which distro is better comes from attachment to a spesific distro and if a distro is just a way to interract with linux than all the discussion about witch distro is better etc. fundementally comes from a a place of love and appreciation for Linux as an OS.

(I use HannahMontanaLinux btw)

The threads about distros are the really bad ones.

digdilem@lemmy.ml on 06 Dec 2023 14:40 next collapse

Because it triggers the tribal instinct, innit.

“I use A, so A must be better than B. Otherwise I’m wrong, and I don’t like that.”

The reality, of course, is that there is no “Best distro” for all use cases, and personal choice is absolutely a qualifier in defining those use cases. If your personal requirement is for a neon pink desktop and rather aged theming aimed at little girls, then you’ve absolutely chosen “The best distro” for you and don’t let anyone tell you differently.

x3i@lemmy.x3i.tech on 06 Dec 2023 15:21 next collapse

Always reminds me of the console wars… people attach their whole identity to all kinds of things nowadays and fight for it like it was a religion. Did not see much good come out of such threads yet.

Divide et impera

governorkeagan@lemdro.id on 06 Dec 2023 16:34 next collapse

I think it’s a double edged sword.

On the one side, you can see it as bringing more attention to Linux and allowing a broader audience to find Linux.

On the flip side, the threads about which distro is best can get very toxic.

flashgnash@lemm.ee on 07 Dec 2023 16:29 collapse

Made infinitely more entertaining by the fact they’re all more or less the same under the hood with minor differences packed ontop of the same Linux kernel

Rentlar@lemmy.ca on 06 Dec 2023 16:43 next collapse

I haven’t minded the tongue-in-cheek jokes about distros since forever, but people who take it way too seriously, and don’t see that each distro has its benefits and drawbacks are kinda annoying.

WeLoveCastingSpellz@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 06 Dec 2023 17:12 next collapse

I think I feel the same way about it

lordnikon@lemmy.world on 07 Dec 2023 06:00 collapse

I kind of feel that could be said about any product or service. very well put.

HannaMontanaLinux

Fucking what

WeLoveCastingSpellz@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 06 Dec 2023 17:15 next collapse

hannahmontana.sourceforge.net Objectively the best distro

WeAreAllOne@lemm.ee on 06 Dec 2023 18:46 collapse

I loled on the Miley Cyrus link! Hahaha fucking hilarious. Good on you dude!

KISSmyOS@lemmy.world on 06 Dec 2023 19:35 collapse

That’s not even close to the weirdest distro out there.

kbal@fedia.io on 06 Dec 2023 16:34 next collapse

The only way to avoid having disagreements about which choice of distro is best would be to avoid having any choices.

silencioso@lemmy.world on 06 Dec 2023 18:08 next collapse

I wouldn’t call it a war, more like a geeks dorky dance contest

WeLoveCastingSpellz@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 06 Dec 2023 19:47 collapse

yea more or less. didn’t know what to call it.

Franzia@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 06 Dec 2023 19:22 next collapse

I have learned absolutely nothing about the strengths and weaknesses of each distro, just learned which ones are difficult to install.

jcarax@beehaw.org on 07 Dec 2023 05:15 collapse

Ease and difficulty of installation are strengths and weaknesses, don’t sell yourself short.

KISSmyOS@lemmy.world on 06 Dec 2023 19:34 next collapse

I agree that the wealth of distros offers a choice for everyone and shows how much users love Linux as a system and respect the idea of a diverse, global open source community as a whole.

(I use Apartheid Linux btw)

hottari@lemmy.ml on 06 Dec 2023 20:03 next collapse

A distro isn’t just a way to interact with the Linux operating system. It’s a collection of tools that helps you do it. Some tools are just sharper that others. The community just likes debating about this important nuance. It’s not that complicated.

My tools of choice come from the famous blue logo distro.

ErnieBernie10@lemmy.world on 06 Dec 2023 20:34 next collapse

Fedora? 🙂

theshatterstone54@feddit.uk on 06 Dec 2023 20:37 next collapse

Blue logo distro

Do you have the slightest idea how little that narrows it down?

(Fedora, Arch, Kubuntu, Zorin, ElementaryOS, ArcoLinux and surely many more I’m forgetting)

hottari@lemmy.ml on 07 Dec 2023 03:14 next collapse

Out of them all, the most famous one is the one I use. Kept the name a bit of a mystery to avoid the resultant argument about it btw.

theshatterstone54@feddit.uk on 07 Dec 2023 09:12 next collapse

No point, the btw gave it away

DasSkelett@discuss.tchncs.de on 07 Dec 2023 12:02 collapse

Ah, clearly Fedora then.

BackOnMyBS@lemmy.world on 07 Dec 2023 15:15 collapse

I think it’s fairly obvious that they mean Arch because they are sharing which distro they use without being prompted, which is inline with a common running joke about doing the same thing, btw.

Auli@lemmy.ca on 09 Dec 2023 12:54 collapse

Sure except every district has the same tools. I distribute is more of a toolbox then a tool.

Quazatron@lemmy.world on 06 Dec 2023 22:40 next collapse

After a while you’ll realise that it’s just healthy competition, not wars.

I use a bunch of distros, just like I have a lot of different tools in my toolbox. Each serves a slightly different function.

Keep in mind that the motto is “World domination,” not “Internal quarrelling”.

LainOfTheWired@lemy.lol on 07 Dec 2023 12:46 collapse

“I USE ARCH BTW” there can’t have a distro discussion without that.
