I still couldnt see myself using kagi or really any webkit browser, but hey, I will at least give it a try

Meh, we have enough costly products, centralized services, and closed source browsers available. If I want to fuck myself over I could go drink an entire bottle of vodka rather than installing this nonsense. If they change literally everything they are doing, and especially stop funding Yandex, I’ll consider trying it.

for me I just really like the competition. I personally have a strong distaste for both chromium and firefox. Really hoping servo and ladybird become strong contenders quickly, servo is actually looking really strong now with it’s speed and compat, but ill take what I can

I haven’t noticed any major issues with Webkit on my Mac, only that Safari’s UI sucks.

Unfortunately Gnome Web also inherits most of Safari’s bad UI design. Really the only thing I want from Gnome Web (apart from performance improvements) is to have a bookmarks bars like Chromium and Firefox. Having to go into the bookmarks side bar is a major slowdown. I’ve had to work around it by using a keyboard shortcut for a new tab, typing in the bookmark name, then using arrow keys to navigate to it.

it for sure has some issues regarding things like web rendering and bugs. It’s perf isnt that great either, but it is usable

I used Orion previously on MacOS, and it is pretty good there. At least we will have a better alternative to Gnome web.

I do prefer and will continue to use an open source browser, but a proprietary browser can still be private. Orion can be verified to not have telemetry.

Also, they have said it will be open sourced. Its not uncommon for software to be made open source later on when the company is more prepared to handle the work that comes along with that.

What are its benefits? It basically just feels like Safari, unfortunately including the things about Safari I don’t like.

Main thing I noticed is that it has the built in tracker (and I think ad?) blocking. I use AdGuard on Safari, but sometimes it doesn’t work correctly because AdGuard stopped running in the background.

Chrome + FF extensions (support for both MV2 and MV3 extensions on the Chrome side), PWAs, not being Apple.

Edit: I switched to Fedora on my Mac after an upgrate to Sequoia screwed up.

Safari has PWAs. They call it “Add to Dock”. Works well in my experience.

I’m comparing Orion on Linux and Gnome web here.

If Orion can add chrome+firefox extensions (idk I heard something like that) then sign me up

this guy is uploading 360p videos to peertube to make people prefer moving to his youtube channel instead. marketing, lol

meldrik@lemmy.wtf on 16 Mar 06:57 collapse

It’s probably just the PeerTube provider tilvids.com that has issues.
