Sweet. I just found out about this project a little while ago. Good luck to everyone, and congrats on your milestone!

This is a very interesting project with some novel tooling. Looking forward to seeing how it develops.

Is it time for me to jump ship from Arch?

Neptr@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 29 Dec 07:49 collapse

If you are willing to set it up, yes try it.

Chimera is cool, and that’s coming from someone who uses Void and Alpine and NetBSD. I’ve not run it on real hardware yet, perhaps I’ll give it a try.

QuazarOmega@lemy.lol on 29 Dec 09:23 next collapse

Chimera is a FOSS project and therefore does not and will not take donations

Lol, what the heck is that supposed to mean?

Failed OpenSource Software

I’m guessing they want Chimera Linux to be developed by volunteers rather than employees? They would still need at least a little funding for their website and download links though.

QuazarOmega@lemy.lol on 29 Dec 16:44 collapse

Idk, it’s just awkward wording, that might be what they mean, like they don’t want money for what they do as to avoid creating an expectation, though that doesn’t come across at all from the original text, so I have no idea

NanoooK@sh.itjust.works on 29 Dec 09:35 next collapse

I really like the complete description of the OS, why they decided to use a tool instead of another. Very interesting project.

hperrin@lemmy.ca on 29 Dec 09:49 next collapse

I thought this was chimeraos.org and I’m not sure how I feel about the name clash. Especially since this project started at least two years after Chimera OS did, from what I can find.

rien333@lemmy.ml on 29 Dec 10:27 next collapse

check the FAQ on chimeraOS here: chimera-linux.org/docs/faq#so-why-use-a-bsd-based…

nrab@sh.itjust.works on 29 Dec 12:03 next collapse

I didn’t even know chimeraOS existed while having known about chimera Linux for years so I guess that shows you how much the name clash matters

setenforce@sh.itjust.works on 29 Dec 21:22 collapse

Apparently chimeraos changed their name from gameros after chimera Linux was already public

I’ve been running Chimera for about 8 months and love it. I’m very picky about package managers, and APK is up there with xbps (Void) in performance.

Almost everything I need I can run via flatpack. There are a few apps that I miss. They have a guide for porting them but I got lost last time I tried to get everything setup.

I thought about just running a container for those apps, but got lost in that setup too :). I’m waiting for some winter westher to hit so I have an excuse to stay inside and play with it.
