Yet another community to discuss shows and movies

!showsandmovies@lemm.ee

Standard don’t be a troll moderation policy

Happy to have any discussion there.

First post about Umbrella Academy

We already have a few of these, is there a need to split the user base further?

I don’t think another community splits the user base. Lemmy is fairly small, everyone can see posts in their all feed. People will engage with the discussions they like. Quite frankly I engage in discussions without even realizing what community they’re in.

rglullis@communick.news on 21 Aug 2024 09:49 next collapse

Of course it splits the user base. If we are going to have one new community created every week, we might as well just use Mastodon and post things based on hashtags.

jet@hackertalks.com on 21 Aug 2024 09:55 next collapse

To me the big functional difference is a discussion is centralized on Lemmy, very findable not just with hashtags. And there is a core moderation for the entire discussion.

rglullis@communick.news on 21 Aug 2024 10:04 collapse

Think of the paradox of choice: the more spread around the discussions are, the harder it becomes for other people to start participating.

Please consider just contributing to any of the existing communities.

Paradox of choice is an issue, but (and I know you are aware) centralization of communities on LW is an issue too.

It’s even more frustrating when you see that LW mods are spread too thin and cannot moderate every community hosted on their instance, but still refuse to close them down when they realize there are no active mods: lemm.ee/post/33851691

rglullis@communick.news on 21 Aug 2024 10:19 collapse

If you want to avoid LW, there is already !television@metacritics.zone, and I will gladly add any of you as moderators.

Blaze@sopuli.xyz on 21 Aug 2024 09:59 collapse

To be honest, this one is just going to allow people who want to avoid Lemmy.world to post about shows and television. There is !moviesandtv@lemm.ee, but there have been issues with the single mod power tripping

Blaze@sopuli.xyz on 21 Aug 2024 09:52 next collapse

Thank you for creating the community!

I guess in my case I’ll probably mostly post about television on there, as !movies@lemm.ee and !animation@lemm.ee are already quite established, but it’s nice to finally have an alternative to !television@lemmy.world

To @kate@lemmy.uhhoh.com, there is indeed a lot of communities, but it comes from

maegul@lemmy.ml on 21 Aug 2024 10:06 collapse

Am I correct in thinking that television at lemmy world has no moderators? (And only bots are listed)??

Blaze@sopuli.xyz on 21 Aug 2024 10:07 collapse

You are perfectly correct!

It might help to advertise this one more if it’s intended to be the new replacement. I’m happy to start posting on a new one

Also maybe a list of the movie/TV related communities and why people prefer each one

What’s the right way to advertise a community?

My general plan is posted here, a couple people from the major instances will subscribe, and then post a bunch of content in the community, that people will engage with. So the current umbrella academy discussion is fairly fruitful.

After that, I have strong opinions I want to share on space above and beyond

What’s the right way to advertise a community?

Posting here, and then in the weekly thread in the coming weeks seems reasonable. We can also post to !movies@lemm.ee, but maybe you could change the displayed name of the community to “Shows and Media discussions”, so that people understand that movies will stay on !movies@lemm.ee ?
