Today being the 23rd anniversary of the premiere of Firefly, I am both, doing a rewatch of the series as it aired should have aired, and started a new community for discussion of the show and related spin-off media.

I was so sad when i watched the last episode (it had been over for a while but i had only recently found the show and binged it). Its so good

There is a movie as well.

Serenity

To be fair, that one made me even more sad.

As it aired? Boo. That order is weird. Dvd order is better.

threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works on 20 Sep 15:21 next collapse

What are the differences?

Romkslrqusz@lemmy.zip on 20 Sep 15:41 collapse

The original pilot / first episode, Serenity (not to be confused as the movie of the same name), is an hour and a half long and sets up a ton of context for the rest of the show.

Instead, Fox aired the second episode, The Train Job, as a pilot.

Serenity was ultimately aired as a series finale / 11th episode, the show was cancelled before he three remaining episodes were aired.

If you haven’t seen Firefly, I strongly recommend that you start with the Serenity Episode. You’ll know by the end whether or not this show is for you.

threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works on 20 Sep 15:50 collapse

Okay, yeah, that seems really dumb. When I watched the series (on Disney+), I’m pretty sure Serenity was first. That’s the one that starts with Shepherd Book walking around the shipyard, correct?

Romkslrqusz@lemmy.zip on 20 Sep 16:01 next collapse

Opening scene is the battle of Serenity Valley, it cuts away to the crew collecting illegal salvage and having a close call with the Alliance, they pick up Shephard and Simon as passengers / commuters on Persephone which I think is the scene you’re referring to.

nokturne213@sopuli.xyz on 21 Sep 01:39 collapse

That is how it is on Hulu, I wager it is the same on D+

nokturne213@sopuli.xyz on 20 Sep 16:06 collapse

It is weird, I agree. Since I have seen everything multiple times it is not a big deal to me. I will revise my plan in case anyone else is planning to watch with me.

NoTagBacks@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 20 Sep 15:17 next collapse

All these years later and I’m still so pissed about how fox handled the show. Truly one of the great injustices of the century.

I still can’t get over how hilarious the scene of Mal fucking with Simon about Kaylee being dead was. The cut to them laughing was so perfect. The editing was so masterful in the show.

You’re aware of !firefly@lemmy.world, as you recently posted there. Would you consider consolidating the two communities?

I don’t think that the Firefly Lemmy userbase is large enough or divided enough to necesitate two communities.

Current moderator @MalReynolds@lemmy.world is AWOL for 2 years.

@kersploosh@lemmy.world, would you consider transferring !firefly@lemmy.world to @nokturne213@sopuli.xyz?

nokturne213@sopuli.xyz on 20 Sep 15:56 collapse

Yes, I know of the world community, but since it is devoid of any recent content I would rather start a community on a different instance than having yet another community on world.

threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.works on 20 Sep 17:57 collapse

Yeah, moving off-world is great for Lemmy overall. It would be great if we could get a pinned post on !firefly@lemmy.world redirecting folks to !firefly@slrpnk.net. Otherwise, new Lemmings who join .world might see the .world community, assume Lemmy has no Firefly userbase, and leave.

Hmm. Sorry about that. I can see it in Firefox via your home instance's Web UI, but it's possible that there's some other frontend or client that can't handle it.

EDIT: The vanilla Web UI for Lemmy and PieFed can handle it. Eternity (Android), Interstellar (Android), mlmym (Web), Photon (Web), Voyager (Web), and Alexandrite (Web) cannot. Mbin (using fedia.io) is missing a ton of comments in this thread, including that one, for whatever reason.

Only one thing’s gonna walk you through this, Mal. Ā Belief.

When I talk about belief, why do you always assume I’m talking about God?

…

I don’t care what you believe. Just believe in it.

wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 20 Sep 17:27 collapse

I love Sheperd Book. I don’t think we ever got an explanation for why he had an effectively ā€œno questions askedā€ pull with the Alliance, and I kind of like that.

I would absolutely have loved more of the show and the world, but some aspects I think are better with no big resolution or explanation. Keeps the series and setting alive in my imagination.

tal@olio.cafe on 20 Sep 20:55 next collapse

There were apparently several comic book series done in the Firefly universe. I don't know whether they're considered canon or what. I have not read them.

kagis

Apparently yes.

Wikipedia: Serenity (comics)

*Serenity* is a line of comic books published by Dark Horse Comics from 2005 to 2017. It is a canonical continuation of Joss Whedon's *Firefly* television series and the 2005 film *Serenity*, which are all part of the Firefly media franchise.[1] It was not an ongoing series; rather, it consisted of a number of miniseries and one-shots, released sporadically.

Starting in 2018, Boom! Studios began publishing its own line of Firefly comics.

Wikipedia: Firefly (Boom! Studios comics)

Firefly was an ongoing line of comic books published by Boom! Studios from 2018, set in the universe of the Firefly media Franchise. Written by Greg Pak and illustrated by Dan McDaid, this series submerges into the themes of family, loyalty, identity, and redemption focusing on the early experiences of Malcom Reynolds during the war that shaped his future as captain of the Serenity.[1] It is a canonical continuation of Joss Whedon's Firefly television series, the 2005 film Serenity, and Dark Horse Comics' Serenity comics, which are all part of the Firefly media franchise.[2]

That might provide more canon material, if you're on the hunt for some.

pwnicholson@lemmy.world on 21 Sep 00:37 collapse

How can it be canon to both the show and the movie? The movie wasn’t in the same canon as the show.

ProfessorHoover@infosec.pub on 21 Sep 02:25 collapse

How so? I don’t recall any canon breaks, but it has been a long time.

pwnicholson@lemmy.world on 21 Sep 05:23 collapse

How Simon broke River out is pretty significantly different, that’s the biggest one. A few other small things.

And I refuse to consider ā€œSerenityā€ canon for other obvious reasons.

dellish@lemmy.world on 21 Sep 03:25 collapse

I won’t spoil it here, but there is an explanation if you go searching for it. It has been a long time, but I believe the comic in question was called A Shepherd’s Tale.

I will say that as with most things the mystery is more fun than the truth.

paraphrand@lemmy.world on 20 Sep 16:49 next collapse

I could never get into it. But everyone I know that’s into it is cool. And Nathan is cool. I’m not sure why it didn’t click with me.

nokturne213@sopuli.xyz on 20 Sep 17:07 next collapse

When it aired initially I missed a few episodes, I worked an hour away from home and we closed on Friday night the same time it aired. I first saw the 3rd or 4th episode felt kind of lost. Several years later I caught it on sci-fi or something and really got into it.

RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world on 20 Sep 17:23 next collapse

Series didn’t click, but I liked Serenity.

paraphrand@lemmy.world on 20 Sep 18:03 next collapse

Oh yeah, I forgot! I totally agree! The movie was good.

jaybone@lemmy.zip on 20 Sep 18:17 collapse

Kind of the opposite for me. I wanted more of the series. Serenity felt a bit forced, like they were trying to cram too much into a movie.

DearMoogle@lemmy.today on 20 Sep 21:53 collapse

Yeah I like Nathan Fillion and I thought Firefly was pretty good, but I didn’t get the internet hype lol. I didn’t connect as much with the characters and space setting. It’s like Buffy but for boys?? I mean I enjoyed the Whedon writing but was missing all the hotties, the whole high-school-is-hell (being a young adult is hell too!), the supernatural universe, the 90s/Y2K fashion. And of course the lovely Sarah Michelle GellaršŸ˜†

rikudou@lemmings.world on 20 Sep 17:52 next collapse

I literally finally started watching it two weeks ago. I thought I maybe wouldn’t enjoy it because it’s been overhyped by everyone online, turns out it’s been hyped just about right, love the show.

Edit: So we actually finished it yesterday! What a shit way to end the series, can’t wait to watch the movie now.

I’ve seen it when I was a kid, though I don’t remember much and I haven’t had any context.

nokturne213@sopuli.xyz on 20 Sep 19:34 next collapse

It will, but I think of his shows this one bears the least of his stain.

Toneswirly@lemmy.world on 20 Sep 20:24 next collapse

Yeah came to say the same. His shows are forever tainted and I say that as a fan of Buffy, Firefly even Dollhouse.

But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world on 20 Sep 22:03 next collapse

Everyone used to hype Buffy and the cast had to bite their tongue, now they’re honest about what a nightmare it was working with that creep

deltapi@lemmy.world on 21 Sep 03:19 collapse

To me, Dollhouse always had a bit of a predatory vibe about it. It almost felt like a ā€œhey, want to know what it feels like to watch a snuff filmā€ vibe…and I don’t mean videos of people simply dying.

The other big 3, Buffy, Angel, Firefly, all felt pretty good to me. Progressive for the time.

But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world on 20 Sep 23:51 collapse

SlartyBartFast@sh.itjust.works on 21 Sep 15:06 collapse

That’s too bad, I hope he grew as a person since the 90s, I really liked Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

Between the Joss factor and the fact that the heroes are obviously based on ā€œlost causeā€ confederates, who today are all racists hicks, it’s hard to watch now. But it’s soooo well made.
