Wow, there’s a throwback!

I don’t think I’ll ever get over how shortsighted buying that domain name was.

I still don’t know where to go to get an expert sex change…

“Experts Exchange” is like the opposite of “cellar door” — the two most rage-inducing words in the English language.

Cyrus Lauron Hooper is an idiot.

Don’t copy and paste shit from the internet.

All of your programming AIs were trained with Stack Overflow data.

tsonfeir@lemm.ee on 07 Apr 2024 15:57 collapse

Fortunately, that wasn’t the only source!

0x0@programming.dev on 05 Apr 2024 13:17 next collapse

IIRC experts exchange was paid, so…

If anything, I thing Stack Overflow replaced Usenet as the source of informal technical advise.

Never heard of Experts Exchange beyond the jokes.

key@lemmy.keychat.org on 05 Apr 2024 15:56 collapse

There were several years when it would be the top result whenever you searched for a tech problem. Back then usenet was already largely dead, was more about mailing lists and IRC if you couldn’t find a blog or forum post that covered the issue.

“Many felt betrayed to see content they had freely contributed for years get held hostage.” sums it up pretty well.

Kissaki@programming.dev on 06 Apr 2024 07:00 next collapse

I had no idea experts exchange existed before stack overflow.

For me, it started showing up in web search results years after stack overflow became popular. And I was confused and annoyed why a copycat with pay walled features (even the answers IIRC) was given priority by search engines.

Blackmist@feddit.uk on 06 Apr 2024 09:00 collapse

Because they kept trying to hide the answers.

Not sure how old the other posters are here, but I remember experts exchange being useful up to that point. Then stack overflow slowly replaced it in the search results.
