Promising New Action RPG: The Secret of the Four Winds is an upcoming action role-playing game (RPG) that’s capturing attention as a unique addition to the retro gaming scene. Developed by Kai Magazine Software, known for its work on homebrew games for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, this new title combines elements from classic franchises like Final Fantasy, Snatcher, and Shadowrun into an immersive storyline.

Featuring slick animated cut-scenes and detailed environments, it’s clear that the team has put considerable effort into creating a visually appealing experience.

A standout feature is the custom board included in the cartridge, which houses an audio enhancement chip capable of delivering music quality on par with a Sega CD/Mega-CD. This innovative solution allows players to enjoy CD-quality soundtracks without needing additional hardware, enhancing the gaming experience significantly.

However, it’s worth noting that while the game supports both the Mk1 and Mk2 versions of the Genesis/Genius CD (the cartridge version), its compatibility with the Genesis 3 system is limited. Moreover, playing the game might require disconnecting the Sega CD if you’re aiming for the full CD-quality audio experience.

You can pre-order now: The Secret of the Four Winds has been made available for pre-order, offering different regional variants to cater to a wide audience. For an enhanced collection experience, there’s also a collector’s edition that comes with additional goodies.

Is the enhanced audio one of the main draws of this game for you?

For some reason I can’t help but think this looks a little bit derivative of Illusion City for the MSX Turbo R.
