EA just released source code for a bunch of old Command and Conquer games, and added Steam Workshop support to bangers like C&C 3: Tiberium Wars (www.pcgamer.com)

Proper open source, GPLv3

Say whuuut? 👀

God I wish EA had never bought Westwood. They used to make bangers. That was the start of enshittification. We knew it was shitty back then and it never really stopped being shit. 30 years later EA pretends to be good by releasing source. Kind of meaningless.

They can turn it around except hell would freeze over before that.

Kraiden@kbin.earth on 27 Feb 20:03 collapse

I dunno. Whoever is in charge of Westwood IP these days isn't completely fucking it up. The remaster team was in contact with the community through development and by and large listened to the feedback. The remaster was good as a result. Releasing the source means the possibility of a modern enhancements ala OpenRA.

Of course none of this redeems them for RA3 or C&C 4

Prunebutt@slrpnk.net on 27 Feb 20:37 next collapse

RA3 brought us Soviet Russian Tim Curry. Nothing has to be redeemed, fight me.

I still want a remaster of the Generals series

WoodScientist@sh.itjust.works on 27 Feb 22:01 next collapse

If they really wanted to redeem themselves, they should public domain it, allowing anyone to make new Command and Conquer games.

Or Maxis.

Well, shit. Good for them! This is a long way from [insert reference to That Reddit Thread here].

Open source renegade!

osaerisxero@kbin.melroy.org on 27 Feb 21:59 collapse

No need, EA licensed it out to the RenegadeX team a few years ago, and since it's UE3 it works great on modern hardware.

They've been working on an adaptation of Renegade to Tiberian Sun and it looks sick as hell

Ghyste@sh.itjust.works on 27 Feb 20:49 next collapse

Best computer game theme ever

lordnikon@lemmy.world on 28 Feb 05:42 next collapse

Its was the first EA purchase I have made in more than 9 years. It felt weird doing it. I wonder if this will change OpenRA

martin@lemmy.caliban.io on 28 Feb 07:44 collapse

Now do it for Earth and Beyond.
