The soundtrack occasionally gets stuck in my head all these years later

As a kid it was great to have both, they have both multiplayer, with powerups. DiddykongRacing had more Variety in Tracks, with its boats and planes, and Lava, snow and space themed tracks. Both good Games

I didn’t realise anyone thought Diddy Kong Racing was better than Mario Kart.

I don’t believe anyone thinks this

I know people that do

Specifically on the N64, with regards to these games? I absolutely do and I don’t think there’s actually much to discuss.

I’m going to check in and say, I think this.

Diddy Kong Racing has a better story than every Mario Kart put together.

Mostly because Mario Karts don’t have a story.

Mario Kart is a party game you play with people you want to casually hang out with one night.

Diddy Kong Racing is a game you play with someone (or yourself) over the course of many nights and sink into the story, fun worlds and characters, while taking on the racing challenges.

Mario Kart is a social lubricant party game with tight, balanced, and fun racing chaos. Diddy Kong Racing is a game with heart and soul and humour and exploration and a story.

tl;dr: I think this

I absolutely believe it’s better. The soundtrack, level variety, and vehicle variety all blow it out of the water.

TokenEffort@sh.itjust.works on 31 Dec 14:23 next collapse

Yeah but Mario Kart didn’t have a soundtrack CD shaped like Mario’s head that broke CD players.

I definitely liked diddy better, just because years later I remember the ‘story’ it had, and the fun of exploring the overworld. That magical feeling of getting to space? It was awesome. The challenge/gameplay may have been tighter in mario, but diddy was just overall more fun.

Diddy Kong wins due to it having a single player campaign.

Popped my Diddy Kong Racing in about 6 months ago to see how it held up.

It doesn’t.

The gameplay in Mario Kart is way better. The racing in DKR feels clunky. I realized the main reason I liked DKR back in the day was because it had a single player campaign and a lot of secrets to find. I still respect it for those qualities, but it is not a better racing game than Mario Kart.

do_not_pm_me@thelemmy.club on 31 Dec 22:51 collapse

I play it on my steam deck and I disagree. It still holds up imo, and I still enjoy it more than Mario kart 64.

The steering might not be what you’re used to , but once you get the hang of it it’s better.

Mario Kart was played for racing, and balloon battles. Diddy Kong Racing was all about Fire Mountain (the game where you capture the eggs).
