A developer named Anthony Salter is working on a new engine called Ultima VII: Revisited to transform the classic RPG Ultima VII into an isometric 3D experience while enhancing its gameplay.
Never played Ultima before. Will give this a shot.

Prepare to be frustrated. The puzzles are gnarly.
Was just going to ask this!
There’s a bunch of old PC RPGs that did not age well. Like the ones that soft lock you if you failed some event or didnt know some obscure data.
Ultima VII is both one of the best RPGs out there and terribly aged, so this project makes sense.
That said, so much of the innovation that made Ultima VII unique has gradually been added to modern games, so playing it fresh would probably less blow your head beyond the point of historical development.
I still love the story, freedom, music and overall mature themes.
Oh, but if you pick up an item called the Skull of Mondain be sure to use it in town! (j/k it’s not in VII.)
Neat. I played Ultima VII once before. I believe I recall it needed mouse controls, and didn’t acknowledge that my mouse existed. My playthrough was…short.
Gaming has come a long way.
Ultima 7 is an excellent game, and it allowed you to inhabit a world in the same way the Elder Scrolls series copied later. The hardest part about it for years was just getting it running, but it’s much easier with Exult.
The Ultima series deserves proper faithful isometric remakes, but EA seems to have zero interest in ever revisiting it (outside of bastardizing the brand for a cash grab Facebook game over a decade ago).
It’s a lot of fun, Ultima 7, if you download and setup Exult, and spend many years from 1997 playing Ultima Online. Oh, and take some magic mushrooms too, to help with the immersion
I only ever tried Pagan: Ultima 8 and it was a little boring. I never ended up proceeding very far, but my tastes have changed a lot since then. I would definitely get a kick out of trying a game written back then because at least I can be confident there’s a story and it’s not just a catalyst for more money.
