Paramount Pictures has taken a nostalgic approach to promoting the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie by creating a fully functional Sega Genesis cartridge as part of its press kit.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck that sounds cool as hell. I doubt a single media outlet will EVER put them in a genesis. And I doubt any collectors will ever put one in a genesis. Youtube streamers are the only ones who would ever put them in the genesis, as part of their video…but only then.

“Hey guys we made this cool thing, that does this cool retro function!”

“Whoa!!! That’s awesome!!!

…let’s all collectively NEVER use it.”

I believe I saw a shorts video from IGN playing it. It has a couple of posters, some voice lines from the characters, and a mini game, where you run from Shadow, that you can’t win or lose.

That abomination they are now calling Sonic on a mock up of old box art makes my childhood vomit.

Grow up, your childhood hasn’t been affected one iota by new things.

The fact that Sonic is still around, kicking goals, being loved by children everywhere, and making Mario look incompetent; well this makes my childhood smile.

I never would have even dreamed I’d be buying Sonic figures for my children.

Well said!

One of my fondest childhood memories is opening a shared gift with my older brother on Christmas morning. A Sega Genesis, Toejam & Earl and Sonic The Hedghehog.

One of my fondest adulthood memories is watching the Sonic movies with my kids and watching them fall in love with this new version of something I grew up loving just as much.

making Mario look incompetent

Lol that’s funny. Main line Mario games are matchless. Best performers there are (though Astro Bot does come close).

This is from someone who grew up with a Genesis. There is a reason Sega stopped making consoles…

Not everyone is the same. I thought the Mario games were bad back then, and I think they got worse with 3D.

Don’t get me started on Mario’s visual design and lack of aesthetic appeal.

I look forward to someone dumping the ROM so I can load it up on my emulator once, mess around with it for five minutes, go “huh,” and forget about it forever afterward but still keep sitting in my emulation folders for completeness’ sake along with Austin Powers Pinball, The New Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley, and those weird naked Japanese mahjong games.

I…don’t understand. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is about Shadow from Sonic Adventure 2 for the Dreamcast, and they put it on a platform two generations before that game or the Dreamcast were ever created?

UKFilmNerd@feddit.uk on 23 Nov 22:48 next collapse

I expect it’s because when you mention Sonic, most people just think MegaDrive/Genesis. They’re not going for technical details.

Uh-huh…

mercano@lemmy.world on 24 Nov 04:22 collapse

I think the did it because that’s the platform the game Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released on.

VanHalbgott@lemmy.autism.place on 24 Nov 16:51 collapse

That one and S&K had Knuckles instead of Shadow, who debuted in Sonic Adventure 2.

CaptainBasculin@lemmy.ml on 23 Nov 15:33 collapse

The big question is, does it add knuckles when you put it to Sonic&Knuckles cartridge?
