Chex Quest

This oddly very fun game came in a box of cereal back in the late 90’s. My cousin and I jokingly decided to install it, fully believing it was going to be a terribly made game. However, we were pleasantly surprised at how good it was and played it a ton.

I can’t say if it still holds up and will need to see if I can find a copy somewhere online to check it out, but it randomly popped up in my head recently and needed to share with others who may have also played it.

Found it for you:

Why is a velociraptor trying to teach kids how to shoot guns???

No no no no!!! This has “Jurassic Park 4” written all over it!!! The abandoned movie script that never got made that you can still read online would have come out around 2004, and featured dinosaurs learning how to shoot guns and speak english, and form a military to fight the U.S. military.

So glad THAT movie never got made…

Where is a velociraptor trying to teach kids how to shoot guns?! I don’t know what you’re talking about, I’m a perfectly common human being!

However, we were pleasantly surprised at how good it was and played it a ton.

That’s because it’s a licensed mod of Doom. Literally, the first level was just the first level of Doom reskinned. I replayed it a few years back, along with 2 and 3 (3 includes a remaster of 1 & 2), and it holds up pretty well.

SpoonyBard@lemmy.world on 11 Aug 07:08 collapse

Well, it makes sense then that we used to describe it as being a “Doom-like” game lol.

This didn’t run on my computer and I wanted to play it so bad!

Chex Quest HD is available on Steam, I think it’s free.

Thanks for the heads-up! Looks like the graphics are quite different. I’ll still give it a shot though.

There is Chex Quest HD which is a remake or remastered version of Chex Quest.
But I think you can find the original chex quest on Archive.org.

Yep

Romkslrqusz@lemmy.zip on 11 Aug 15:52 collapse

I was so disappointed by it. It’s not really an HD remake of the original, it’s a separate game that felt kind if bland by comparison

HakunaHafada@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 11 Aug 16:19 collapse

I was really young when the original was around, and I honestly don’t remember much about it aside from playing it only a couple times, so I don’t have much to compare the HD to.

Man, that game was a blast!

notptr@lemmy.sdf.org on 11 Aug 11:14 next collapse

Great game. It can be easily get to hold of and the makers made two new episodes for it. The wad file is chex3.wad which has the original and the new two episodes

Yep yep, others have already chimed in with relevant info, but yeah, got this in a damn cereal box as a kid, found this to be an actually pretty damn good game, at least for the early/mid 90s.

Its not got as many different enemy or weapons as DOOM, but it does have a good number of levels, especially for… being completely free.

There were some great free games back then that came in cereal or some other give away. Chex Quest, Toy Story, Bionicle, Back Yard Baseball, Spot (7up), Roller Coaster Tycoon, and a bunch of just board game remakes. A big chunk of my childhood gaming was on free games now that im thinking about it.

That games general vibe always reminded me of Blasto
