VGHF offers a magazine subscription where they’ll send out a random vintage issue each month to offload their collection of dupes. Thought it was a cool way to relive the past while supporting video game archival work.

I have been subscribing to this for three five months now and I love it!

The magazines come bagged, boarded, and sealed with a certificate inside.

I’ve gotten two issues from the late 1990s and one Electronic Games, October 1982! My fifth magazine will be in the mail soon.

Here’s what I’ve gotten, if anyone is curious:
Ultra Game Players, January 1997
Ultra Game Players, holiday 1997
GamePro, October 1995
Electronic Games, October 1982

Do you get any demo disks with them?

calliope@retrolemmy.com on 26 Sep 15:49 collapse

No, they are just magazines!

QuoVadisHomines@sh.itjust.works on 26 Sep 16:08 collapse

Booo (presuming they came with one)

calliope@retrolemmy.com on 26 Sep 16:31 collapse

I would opt out if it were available. I like magazines, but I don’t find old optical media useful at all.

QuoVadisHomines@sh.itjust.works on 26 Sep 16:33 collapse

I still have working consoles so for me they could be fun

I could potentially see them doing this if they get a lot of those, but they might not. People kept magazines, but a lot of people didn’t keep the discs with them.

The foundation also has a few dozen demo discs cataloged, with mirrors at archive.org if you want to burn some!

Bagged, boarded, and sealed with a certificate? Won’t that just encourage speculation purchasers calling themselves “collectors” to try to resell them at absurd prices in a few years?

calliope@retrolemmy.com on 27 Sep 12:00 collapse

Nah, bagging and boarding something doesn’t turn it into something to speculate on.

They do that for storage and shipping purposes.

Are you subbed to the 80s-90s option or to the “surprise me” option?

calliope@retrolemmy.com on 27 Sep 15:20 collapse

The 80s-90s one!

TwinTitans@lemmy.world on 26 Sep 15:10 next collapse

This is a really cool idea. I love it.

That's awesome! Sometimes I regret throwing out my milk crates full of old Nintendo Powers from the 90s. I miss flipping through those.

It’s not pretty and it’s rife with issues.

BUT this will let you search any game from the first issue to around 1996 and will tell you which issues it appears in

I love this idea, what a great way to raise money

Strider@lemmy.world on 26 Sep 17:38 next collapse

Would be nice, but $46 international shipping in 2025…wow

ClockworkN@lemmy.world on 27 Sep 14:53 collapse

Yikes, you’re right. I was so down for this until it was going to $75+ CAD per magazine. I’m really sad now.

MisterMoo@lemmy.world on 27 Sep 13:28 next collapse

Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
