Almost finished Gold and looking forward to starting Emerald.

I’ve been replaying Gold on my game it color. I just beat the elite 4 and started going through the Kano gyms.

The elite 4 battles, were tough and it was really close. I genuinely was feeling the tension as I landed my last few hits.

The Kanto gyms seem really easy so far. Much easier than the elite 4, so that’s a bit disappointing.

I did decide against fighting red after getting the badges. I estimate my team will be around level 50 when I finish getting the ka to badges and I do not want to grind 20 levels to match red’s level.

After this, I’m going to play emerald, which I’ll emulate on my 3ds. I’m really looking forward to it as it seems like a huge technological leap compared to red > gold.

I played these games as a kid, but only have good memories of red, I had 0 memory of gold, and I have 0 memories of emerald. I never played the platinum generation so I’m extremely excited for that one.

Get ready for the brass section when you play Emerald! Memes aside - the Hoenn soundtracks are some of the coziest, most nostalgic set of songs.

I think it’s fun to do the brail puzzles without looking up the solutions online - other than a brail alphabet.

And the bike puzzles And the secret bases And the weather effects in different areas

God i love that game, still have the cartridge for it my grandpa got me when i was a kid.

Also, dies a little

Emerald… is retro now?

It’s 21 years old.

Yes.

Edit: 20 and a half.

while i wouldn't go that far, there are people out there who would call the 3DS remakes retro now

YewEyeOwe31@lemmings.world on 28 Mar 13:58 collapse

Yep we pretty old now lol.

So many of the things they did in gen 3 (and started in gen 2) like the weather, secret bases, and the daily events and activities (Lilycove lottery, TV announcements, outbreaks) added so much depth to the game.

It’s like a pure version of modern daily activities in games, without all the toxicity. And they did this all on cartridges with built in batteries.

IIRC, you don’t even need to look up a brail alphabet - the game lays it out for you in one of the ruins

YewEyeOwe31@lemmings.world on 28 Mar 13:41 collapse

That’s true, but from what I remember wasn’t super intuitive. Maybe I’m wrong though - I was a child the last time I ran through it all.

I don’t know anything about this series, so I had to do a search to be sure all the colours lined up, and I’m still only about 90% sure about it, but here’s the word you needed to include so that the uninitiated know what you’re talking about:

“Pokemon”

It’s honestly amazing that you wrote all of that and never named the series you were talking about. It was extra confusing that you called it a “game it color” when I’m pretty sure you mean “game boy color”.

TomAwsm@lemmy.world on 28 Mar 16:51 collapse

I didn’t even realize until you pointed it out, the colors are almost synonymous with the franchise for me…

I recently purchased a copy of Alpha Sapphire since I haven’t finished a Hoenn playthrough yet. Looking forward to finally finishing a Hoenn region run!

You can tell that Kanto was an afterthought by how easy it is in comparison, it was still great though

neon_nova@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 28 Mar 13:10 collapse

I assumed it was less of an after thought and more of a, we are running out of space thing.

Is still amazing that they put the most of the region in there.

smeg@feddit.uk on 28 Mar 13:34 collapse

I think it was a combination of more space on the cartridge and better compression algorithms. The rumour was that Iwata wrote some miraculous code that produced enough space to include Kanto too, but I think that’s apocryphal.

You should challenge Red! Don’t put it down without challenging Red! You don’t need to match his level, by getting serious you definitely should be able to beat him with a big level deficit.

Thanks! I did give it a try with my current team and I was surprised how easy it was to take down pikachu.

What really got me was his espeon. I am pretty weak towards psychic types.

I probably could get something strong against it, but then I’d have to grind for a bit to get it down.

I’m guessing my kedabra could take care of snorlax and my gyrados or amoharos could take down his charizard
