This, but also isn’t that how genetics works? You’re not going to see a native Chihuahua thriving in the arctic.

(But it’s probably something about what countries actually do testing, etc. )

DeadDigger@lemmy.zip on 02 Oct 13:49 collapse

Well when you look at Europe you see that the countries that make up the majority of the countries that colonized America have the higher autism rates too

Tell me you don’t understand sample selection bias without saying you don’t understand sample selection bias.

Nighed@feddit.uk on 01 Oct 17:03 collapse

I think that’s the point

mienshao@lemmy.world on 01 Oct 12:07 next collapse

Yeah if this instance is going to become a place to post disinformation, I’m out. I came here to escape reddit, not double down on its worst aspects.

fossilesque@mander.xyz on 01 Oct 12:14 next collapse

It’s a place to deconstruct disinformation. Discussing why things are wrong can be more important than just facts.

notsosure@sh.itjust.works on 01 Oct 13:52 next collapse

Just block the idiots.

AugustWest@lemmy.world on 01 Oct 14:38 next collapse

If you block OP, you have basically left the community, as OP is this community. Either way, I’m fairly certain OP is posting this as in “look at how dumb this is.” It’s a science memes community.

bleistift2@sopuli.xyz on 01 Oct 18:25 collapse

Like the idiots who don’t understand sarcasm?

notsosure@sh.itjust.works on 01 Oct 19:02 collapse

Sarcasm no worky worky on internet. Therefore we invent emoji. 🔏

scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech on 01 Oct 17:05 collapse

Calm down, you’re in a memes channel, and OP here posts science memes all the time. I’m very sure this is satirical

Denjin@feddit.uk on 01 Oct 12:30 next collapse

Obviously it’s because people in Africa and south America don’t have access to paracetamol.

New Zealand very smart, just skip Autism altogether.

Many diseases seem to not exist in New Zealand.

It’s time to introduce everyone to the concept of Culture bound syndrome

fossilesque@mander.xyz on 01 Oct 13:06 next collapse

Good link, thx.

Ceedoestrees@lemmy.world on 01 Oct 17:12 collapse

My favorite part:

Some culture-bound syndromes appear with similar features in several cultures, but with locally specific traits, such as penis panics.

Tylenol is just really popular in the US

The US should just switch to paracetamol. Problem solved!

Let’s play Pick the Cognitive Biases. Not just in the picture, but in the comments and the reasons people downvoted this.

If you see this comment, it could be interesting to get an idea of how many people:

a) Thought OP posted this in like a “Look at how dumb this is” way, or,

b) Thought OP agreed with the idea presented in the image.

I think this might have to do with communication climates (I am so far from an expert in anything) and how a climate of disagreement with peers and prevalent media can affect how a message is received. In other words, if surrounded by stupid people with stupid ideas it’s easy to assume the next stupid idea has come from a stupid person.

bonedaddy@mander.xyz on 01 Oct 18:44 next collapse

I for one upvoted this post because it is stupid.

Autism is caused by (squints) the Welsh.

Anyway, fact is that the US ranks in the place 33 in the average IQ level, maybe saved by the chinese and corean scientifics working in the MIT, no need of an fake map.
