Those poor, poor people.

shalafi@lemmy.world on 21 Feb 18:53 next collapse

Must suck to be a such freak of nature that even God turns his head from them.

otacon239@lemmy.world on 21 Feb 19:52 next collapse

I am one of those people. An entire burrito can be ruined for me with just a few pieces throughout. I always feel so bad when someone gives me food with cilantro.

Addv4@lemmy.world on 21 Feb 20:21 collapse

That sucks. I just made some enchiladas with diced cilantro stem last night (more flavor in the stem). Donā€™t feel bad, Iā€™m sure they donā€™t mind when they realise it tastes bad to you. Now Iā€™m just sad you donā€™t get to enjoy the true taste of cilantro.

ProfessorProteus@lemmy.world on 21 Feb 23:45 collapse

I love cilantro too, but now I have to wonderā€¦ What if weā€™re not the ones getting the ā€œtrueā€ taste?

Iā€™ll take my blissful ignorance with some cilantro on top.

Addv4@lemmy.world on 21 Feb 23:47 collapse

Sounds like a plan. Even if weā€™re not getting the true taste, it should be considered true because itā€™s that good.

ladicius@lemmy.world on 21 Feb 20:21 collapse

I have a mild variant of this. Itā€™s funny when it hits you in completely unsuspicious food.

Addv4@lemmy.world on 21 Feb 21:23 collapse

Yeah, itā€™s used in a lot of different culturesā€™ foods. Like it you eat Indian or Vietnamese food, theres a decent chance it could be there, not just Mexican, which is what I think a lot of people think of when cilantro is used in cooking.

Naz@sh.itjust.works on 21 Feb 19:14 next collapse

I have the opposite ā€“ almost all vegetation has a taste and itā€™s quite good.

Basil? Yes. Garlicā€¦ Cabbage Spinach Asparagus Broccoli Carrots! Peppers! Beets!

I just made a huge pot of Borscht last night with beets, carrots, potatoes, cabbage, tomatoes, basil and olive oil - itā€™s going to feed me for days!

Feel bad for the people missing out on how tasty Earth plants are

idiomaddict@lemmy.world on 21 Feb 23:52 collapse

I dislike grapefruit and durian. Otherwise, Iā€™ve never met a plant I donā€™t like.

m4m4m4m4@lemmy.world on 21 Feb 20:24 next collapse

My father was a farmer for pretty much all of his life (since he could work until he couldnā€™t) and had a crop of cilantro at one time. I never knew nor heard about somebody saying that cilantro tastes like soap, never even imagined it was a thing. It was only until a few years ago when I started to get my nose into Reddit when I read about people saying that.

RebekahWSD@lemmy.world on 21 Feb 21:56 next collapse

It sucks. I love Mexican (texmex here mostly) food and almost all of it is shoved full of cilantro and then Iā€™m just sad. Delicious food, ruined by soap.

The_v@lemmy.world on 21 Feb 23:08 collapse

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/OR6A2

Itā€™s likely linked to OR6A2.

I had a coworker who had this gene and TAS2R38, the one that makes people taste bitter stronger.

We ended up on several multi-country business trips together every year. So we were eating all sorts of local cuisine.

I always tried to sit where I could see her face during any meal. It was comedy gold at times.

metallic_z3r0@infosec.pub on 22 Feb 12:08 collapse

I have both, but I also have ADHD and prioritize the novel over the good. I find cilantro and bitter foods to be more interesting, and donā€™t mind them at all.

Tarkcanis@lemmy.world on 21 Feb 22:53 next collapse

I would characterize it more like a floral perfume.

Skanky@lemmy.world on 21 Feb 23:59 next collapse

Yeah, Iā€™m one of those people. AMA?

Itā€™s weird - sometimes I can kinda understand why people love cilantro so muchā€¦ Itā€™s like, I can kinda pick out the ā€œgoodā€ flavors in it even though the overwhelming flavor that registers with me is soap. Itā€™s a real bummer, because I love food and feel like Iā€™m missing it on some really unique flavor profiles.

Itā€™s always awkward having to ask for ā€œno cilantroā€ in restaurants, and then explaining that itā€™s not an allergy. It just doesnā€™t taste good to me.

Droggelbecher@lemmy.world on 22 Feb 06:50 next collapse

Weirdly, Iā€™m similar from the opposite side. I can see how it tastes soapy to people, I kinda detect the soapyness too. But it doesnā€™t ruin it for me, I like cilantro.

Candied ginger tastes like soap to me though. Fresh or powdered ginger doesnā€™t.

Skanky@lemmy.world on 22 Feb 14:05 collapse

Huh. I have no problem with candied ginger (or fresh) at all. Iā€™m not crazy about it, but it certainly doesnā€™t taste like soap.

Droggelbecher@lemmy.world on 22 Feb 16:46 collapse

Very interesting, so itā€™s probably unrelated.

TisI@reddthat.com on 22 Feb 13:44 next collapse

Ok, completely irrelevant, but some older and cheaply made chocolates taste like soap, have you ever tasted it?

Skanky@lemmy.world on 22 Feb 14:07 collapse

Nope. I try to avoid cheap chocolate though. Life is too short for that. Lol

Itā€™s hard to describe what cheap chocolate tastes like, but itā€™s day the best description is ā€œwaxyā€

0ops@lemm.ee on 22 Feb 15:45 collapse

Iā€™m the opposite, overall I like cilantro (to a point, too much cilantro is definitely a thing), but I do detect a little bit of that soapiness that people talk about. Luckily not too much though, itā€™s mostly minty to me.

CaptPretentious@lemmy.world on 22 Feb 02:05 next collapse

Ever been in a public bathroom that has that pink soap. Cilantro tastes like that smells.

TisI@reddthat.com on 22 Feb 13:41 collapse

Seriously? Man I feel bad for you.

shadowedcross@sh.itjust.works on 22 Feb 02:36 next collapse

My partner and I both have this, itā€™s awful.

Pilferjinx@lemmy.world on 22 Feb 06:23 collapse

It doesnā€™t taste like soap to me, but itā€™s intense. So much so that it ruins an entire meal. If I cut the amount to basically nothing it can be pleasant.

TheRealKuni@midwest.social on 22 Feb 06:41 next collapse

I compare it to the smell of stinkbugs rather than the taste of soap.

Saturnalia@sh.itjust.works on 22 Feb 11:46 next collapse

That aligns with some things Iā€™ve heard about flowers. For instance, a flower might contain skatole in its aroma. In very small amounts, itā€™s pleasant. In large amounts, it smells like what itā€™s named for, scat. At a low level, it makes jasmine and orange blossoms better. At a high level, you have a shit smelling stink bomb.

RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world on 22 Feb 17:05 collapse

Huh. Itā€™s just another herb for me. Not much different than Parsley. No strong opinions about it either way.

HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 22 Feb 03:35 next collapse

Pic looks like AI BS

fossilesque@mander.xyz on 22 Feb 03:36 collapse

Thatā€™s the joke haha.

HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 22 Feb 03:43 collapse

Ah shit Iā€™m too tired haha

fossilesque@mander.xyz on 22 Feb 03:55 collapse

Nah, easy to miss.

Flocklesscrow@lemm.ee on 22 Feb 05:01 next collapse

In other words, not liking cilantro is a genetic defect

apotheotic@beehaw.org on 22 Feb 14:50 collapse

People with this mutation are commonly known as super tasters!

Uri@infosec.pub on 22 Feb 09:27 next collapse

Finally got an excuse šŸ˜

MrsDoyle@sh.itjust.works on 22 Feb 11:07 next collapse

Oh yes, coriander. Yuck. I was so relieved to discover it was a genetic thing that I was scraping this disgusting weed off my food while everyone else was saying how delicious it was.

flora_explora@beehaw.org on 22 Feb 14:08 next collapse

If you want to know more about this (because in reality it is a bit more complicated) MinuteFood explains it pretty well in this video.

ZeffSyde@lemmy.world on 22 Feb 17:08 collapse

To me, it tastes like what it was cooked in was never rinsed after washing. So much Thai takeout wasted even after I requested no cilantro.
