Uh?

ELI5 please?

TriflingToad@lemmy.world on 02 Sep 2024 21:43 collapse

my guess is just that they know a lot about birds so they know why the hummingbirds aren’t interested. Here’s their website www.allaboutbirds.org/news/feeding-hummingbirds/

Another great way to feed these little gems…

I hope I find someone who talks to me the way this organization talks about hummingbirds 🥺

Tikiporch@lemmy.world on 02 Sep 2024 21:59 next collapse

Only your mom, grandma or auntie will ever call you a little gem.

If they haven’t, I’ll just say now you’re a lil’ gem.

Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works on 02 Sep 2024 23:11 collapse

How could a trifling toad be anything else but a little gem? 💎 🐸

essteeyou@lemmy.world on 02 Sep 2024 16:29 next collapse

Hummingbirds ignored my feeder this year. Ants ended up finding a path to it, so I took it down. :-/

MysteryMeatbag@mander.xyz on 02 Sep 2024 18:00 next collapse

We found that ant moats like these are great for keeping the ants off our Hummingbird feeders. You can find how-to’s online for DIY versions too.

essteeyou@lemmy.world on 02 Sep 2024 20:56 next collapse

Oh amazing! Thanks for sharing, I hope the hummingbirds come back.

BaroqueInMind@lemmy.one on 04 Sep 2024 00:17 next collapse

Those are perfect for mosquitoes to breed in, great job.

explodicle@sh.itjust.works on 04 Sep 2024 00:32 collapse

You could put in a few drops of oil or dish soap.

essteeyou@lemmy.world on 07 Sep 2024 19:00 collapse

I set one up with my feeder and I saw a hummingbird on it yesterday. Thanks for the advice!

MysteryMeatbag@mander.xyz on 07 Sep 2024 20:22 collapse

Excellent! I’m glad I could help.

the_post_of_tom_joad@sh.itjust.works on 02 Sep 2024 21:22 collapse

My feeder stole your birds cuz i had full on dogfights this year

kat_angstrom@lemmy.world on 02 Sep 2024 17:07 next collapse

Nope, I had lots this year. It’s been lovely

AdlachGyfiawn@lemmygrad.ml on 02 Sep 2024 17:27 next collapse

This is the most devastating insult I’ve ever read

fireweed@lemmy.world on 02 Sep 2024 18:15 next collapse

Feeders are okay, but the real joy comes from watching hummingbirds feed at flowers. In my experience they’re big fans of fuchsias, and I’ve also seen them at fireweed.

Edit: dropped an h, misplaced an s

Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works on 02 Sep 2024 23:15 next collapse

There’s an h somewhere in fuhshchias, but don’t ask me where. Autocorrect says fuchsia, but that could be a hallucination.

proudblond@lemmy.world on 03 Sep 2024 06:14 next collapse

As someone who always spells it wrong, I must tell you how much I appreciate “fuhshchias”

Also hummingbirds love my fuchsias.

Empricorn@feddit.nl on 04 Sep 2024 03:00 next collapse

The pasta? I think it’s spelled fusilli.

Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works on 04 Sep 2024 06:06 collapse

Fusilli, you crazy bastard! How are you?

Verito@lemm.ee on 04 Sep 2024 09:49 collapse

Fhqwhgads?

pewgar_seemsimandroid@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 20 Nov 2024 23:09 collapse

why did you comment gibberish on my post?

Big_Boss_77@lemmynsfw.com on 03 Sep 2024 23:49 next collapse

This is my goal in the coming years. We have dozens at feeders, but I’d love to get enough flowers going for them.

jaemo@sh.itjust.works on 04 Sep 2024 08:17 collapse

I spent 120$ last year on fushias that were ignored

I caved and got a feeder when it got near freezing and one of them was making a fuss in the tree in my back yard, and it needs refilling every 2 days now, so I guess no accounting for taste…

Typotyper@sh.itjust.works on 04 Sep 2024 09:44 collapse

We have one that comes to the window when the feeder is empty “Excuse me, your slacking….ill be back in an hour to check up on your work performance “

weariedfae@lemmy.world on 02 Sep 2024 22:03 next collapse

I only have 2 because they live in the nearby tree and attack any other hummingbirds that try to come for a drink.

Big_Boss_77@lemmynsfw.com on 03 Sep 2024 23:51 collapse

Keep the one the pair protects, add a second 10-15’ away. When they start resource guarding that one, add a third in the middle. We’re up to five feeders now using this methodology.

weariedfae@lemmy.world on 03 Sep 2024 23:56 collapse

Good idea. I did put out a second one like 5 feet away and haven’t seen any fights but a third would probably even everything out. Thanks!

finitebanjo@lemmy.world on 02 Sep 2024 22:14 next collapse

Okay okay I’m sorry, please show your dad the pictures I need to know.

Reckless_Moose@ttrpg.network on 04 Sep 2024 02:31 next collapse

They keep coming for my cucumber plants, so I thought I would get a feeder, would that be a bad idea?

Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works on 04 Sep 2024 08:00 collapse

Oh weird, do they damage the plants? I’ve never heard of this before.

Typotyper@sh.itjust.works on 04 Sep 2024 09:42 next collapse

Flowers They like flowers.

Reckless_Moose@ttrpg.network on 04 Sep 2024 12:51 collapse

No apparent damage, I guess any flower will do?

Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works on 04 Sep 2024 07:59 next collapse

I’ve never had a Hummingbird feeder not get attention. This is a weird concept for me. Maybe it’s a regional thing?

Kolanaki@yiffit.net on 04 Sep 2024 09:46 collapse

I wonder how many people got bird feeders, hung them, and waited for the birds without ever having put any bird food in them to attract said birds.
