Here is an article about it: zmescience.com/…/hamster-wheel-running-nature-rep…

Damage@feddit.it on 01 Sep 18:45 collapse

Thanks, the picture was way too far into the Jpeg realm

marcos@lemmy.world on 01 Sep 17:11 next collapse

Hey! Ranking the species by distance is really unfair!

bigfondue@lemmy.world on 01 Sep 17:30 collapse

That makes the slugs even more impressive

jol@discuss.tchncs.de on 01 Sep 18:10 collapse

I think slugs got tricked into thinking it was an endless surface and kept exploring it.

boydster@sh.itjust.works on 01 Sep 22:28 next collapse

Well now we need the Möbius snail-exercise wheel to make this a reality

9point6@lemmy.world on 01 Sep 18:38 next collapse

I need to put some wheels in my garden

bigfondue@lemmy.world on 01 Sep 18:47 collapse

I think slugs will follow a slime trail, so maybe they are just following the infinite slime trail.

That’s a strange use of question marks?

hperrin@lemmy.ca on 01 Sep 18:34 next collapse

I agree?

Klear@quokk.au on 01 Sep 18:58 collapse

Why do you think they do it!

TachyonTele@piefed.social on 01 Sep 21:03 next collapse

$Who.knows

kamenlady@lemmy.world on 01 Sep 19:32 collapse

They must like question marks??

ayyy@sh.itjust.works on 02 Sep 05:51 next collapse

Where’s @theUwUhugger@lemmy.world when you need ‘em?

tromars@feddit.org on 02 Sep 11:27 collapse

I think they’re meant to express surprise or bewilderment here, which works imo

fckreddit@lemmy.ml on 01 Sep 18:28 next collapse

Now this is the type of science, I can get behind.

CoffeeSoldier@sh.itjust.works on 01 Sep 22:27 collapse

Is most of science, something you cannot?

There are also bigger ones for cats, they also love it

Parrots love it too, but in a different way

The cat cafe in Denver used to have a big one, it was great to see the cats take turns in it. One would just lay at the bottom of it and hog it from others who wanted to use it.

AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space on 01 Sep 22:59 next collapse

I’m imagining a Bjenny Montero cartoon, where the cartoon frog character is running on the wheel and the cartoon slug character standing next to it says “Hey! Quit hogging the wheel! I want a go.”

Dagnet@lemmy.world on 01 Sep 20:22 next collapse

Have you ever seen a human size wheel? They are pretty fun so I totally get it

Blaster_M@lemmy.world on 01 Sep 21:05 next collapse

Wait until corporations find out there are animals that want to do free labor and you don’t have to feed them.

Corn@lemmy.ml on 02 Sep 06:03 collapse

They already do that for civet coffee.

angrystego@lemmy.world on 02 Sep 07:10 collapse

The civets are not in it voluntarily though. They do eat the coffee fruits spontaneously, but for civet coffea production they are usually captured and kept in tiny cages - it’s really sad.

Perspectivist@feddit.uk on 02 Sep 04:44 next collapse

I have gerbils. Some of them love it and some couldn’t care less. For one it took over 6 months of watching her sister and just sitting in it to figure out how it works. Once she did, there was no end to it.

Shelbyeileen@lemmy.world on 02 Sep 08:36 next collapse

Hermit crabs love them too!

umbraroze@slrpnk.net on 02 Sep 09:44 next collapse

Aww, no turtles? Come on, turtles, you’re so much faster than slugs and snails, go have a walk and demolish those distance figures! 🐢

Hagdos@lemmy.world on 02 Sep 10:27 collapse

It would be really surprising to see turtles on the wheel, considering there are no wild turtles in the Netherlands.

umbraroze@slrpnk.net on 02 Sep 11:09 collapse

Sure, there aren’t wild turtles in the Netherlands. But this call was aimed at the turtles in general, worldwide! Turtles will be able to get to the Netherlands from the nearest location. Eventually. We believe in them!

Hagdos@lemmy.world on 02 Sep 16:47 collapse

I admire your positive outlook and confidence in turtles
