Dandelions are a gift!

Clovers are a gift. If you want a nice, evenly covered , green lawn, clovers are much better than grass.

Be me

Don’t give a shit about a nice lawn, not at all how I want to spend time or money

Have fuckton of weeds

Find out it’s better

Accidentally win, that’s cool

propter_hog@hexbear.net on 20 Apr 18:22 collapse

I’ve literally seeded my lawn with clover. It had naturally occurring clover, but I wanted more of it.

My damn problem is invasives.

We used to have an all native yard. But as my disability has gotten worse, maintaining that state has gotten prohibitive. Then that fucking hurricane messed things up, and it’s pretty much wrecked in the terms of native plantings now.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s actually really pretty, all wild and green. But trying to get rid of stuff like kudzu is not an easy task, and it isn’t the only thing that’s taken advantage.

dudinax@programming.dev on 20 Apr 18:43 next collapse

That’s how I do it. I’ve got a wide variety of plants which leads to a wider variety of bugs and even rabbits for a few years, but they were killed or run off by a cat.

LoamImprovement@beehaw.org on 20 Apr 21:23 next collapse

Yeah, I think people forget that the definition of a weed is simply “A plant that is unwanted.” Himalayan blackberry in the PNW is often a weed and it grows aggressively in a lot of backyards here, but lots of people keep it around because… blackberries.

Kolanaki@pawb.social on 20 Apr 21:27 next collapse

As far as I’ve been taught, a weed is just a plant growing in an undesirable location. If you had a tomato plant growing in your garden of orchids, that tomato plant could be considered a weed.

Mesophar@pawb.social on 21 Apr 12:29 next collapse

Yeah, “weeds” are contextual to what and where the plant is. Of course it’s a made up concept, it’s not a classification of a type of plant, just a description of a plant you don’t want in a certain spot.

Donkter@lemmy.world on 21 Apr 12:40 collapse

Also lots of weeds are considered weeds because they are invasive and choke out the native/more delicate plants in the area.

Just tried smoking a CBD joint, again. God, it’s awful. Clear and direct legalization of THC containing cannabis is a must, otherwise all that Delta8/HHC/whatever chemically treated bud you can think of will be a major health issue everywhere.

What would this sort of gardening/lawn care be called if I wanted to find more concrete explanations and details towards achieving your own ecosystem

Slatlun@lemmy.ml on 21 Apr 01:58 next collapse

You can look at wildlife/pollinator gardening. There are different focuses like rewilding or even restoration. There are also a lot of companies willing to sell incredibly invasive plants while calling them nice things, so buy from a reputable source if you do buy plants or seeds.

There’s a garden in Göttingen Germany specialising in endangered “weeds” because many of them have been eradicated to extinction.

I didn’t mow my lawn like planned this weekend because a bunch of violets and dandelions and other flowers popped up, and the bees were having a great weekend because of it.

Bonus points : The Scott’s Lawn truck came through and they didn’t even bother leaving a flyer on my door.
