We used to make these all the time as kids. You need a second pair of magnets in push configuration on the back for this to work.

fartographer@lemmy.world on 20 Aug 18:19 collapse

Don’t forget the spark plug wrapped in wire that’s been taped to a light bulb

bryndos@fedia.io on 20 Aug 18:27 collapse

With the right electric field you can generate (a small amount of) thrust our of ions in air flowing over a charged plane.

One of the myth-busters "anti-gravity" devices they tested was actually (very weak) a static electric ion thruster.

Pretty cool - but it did need electric power input.

NatakuNox@lemmy.world on 20 Aug 21:15 collapse

What about the 4 magnets on the sides for turning!?

Eh_I@lemmy.world on 20 Aug 23:12 collapse

You’re going to need a three-way monopole electromagnet if you ever want to reverse.

You gotta release the parking brake

reminds me of the videos of that guy who sits in wheeled bucked ostensibly pushing himself with an umbrella and a leaf blower; guy carries a leaf blower, umbrella and bucket around all the time just to make people look at him. lol

missing microwave transformer, HHO electrolysis, cellulose, and nitric acid bro… obviously

The magnet on the bonnet is pulling the car forwards as much as the magnet hanging on the wire is pulling backwards towards the car, and since they share the same root object (the car) the net motion is zero.

If either of those magnets were rooted on the ground, the car would move (albeit not very far)

Dawn, didn't knew you could do that with lasers. Brilliant

RedditRefugee69@lemmynsfw.com on 21 Aug 18:17 collapse

Yeah lasers move at the speed of laser, not the speed of light.

The magnet dislikes you personally, that’s why.

Far too many people think this is how “energy” and “frequencies” work.

knacht1@lemmy.world on 20 Aug 20:23 next collapse

It used to work till you broke it.

Codpiece@feddit.uk on 20 Aug 21:20 next collapse

You need a stronger magnet at the front obviously.

Or it’s a toy American truck and they’re metric magnets. Swap them for federal units.

jaybone@lemmy.zip on 20 Aug 21:31 collapse

Water destroys magnets. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Rookie mistake, the thing holding the magnet from the back side is also metal so it cancels out
