Seen autoclaves used for aircraft parts construction. Massive.

Why do aircraft parts need to be sterile?

theilleists@lemmy.world on 01 Sep 2024 15:49 next collapse

For airborne contagions. Next question.

Verat@sh.itjust.works on 01 Sep 2024 19:49 next collapse

It is more for heat treatment of the metal after forming it, or for coatings that require it.

SpermHowitzer@sh.itjust.works on 01 Sep 2024 21:43 collapse

It’s not for it to be sterile, it’s to manufacture composite parts. They get vacuum bagged, then put into the autoclave and heated under pressure to bond all the layers extremely tightly.

Thanks!

A bit like HELA cells.

I’ll never forget being a student and opening one of these right after flashing an instrument. I wait a bit now…
