Hey everyone, wanderer recently celebrated it’s 10th anniversary. Well, as far as minor versions go at least.

First and foremost: What is wanderer? wanderer is a self-hosted GPS track database. You can upload your recorded GPS tracks or create new ones and add various metadata to build an easily searchable catalogue. Think of it as a fully FOSS alternative to sites like alltrails, komoot or strava.

Next: Thank you for almost 1.2k stars on GitHub. It’s a great motivation to see how well-received wanderer is.

By far the most requested feature since my last post was the possibility to track your acitivities. This is now possible on the new profile page which shows various statistics to help you gain better insights into your trailing/running/biking habits. Lists have also received a major upgrade allowing you easily bundle a multiday hike and share it with other users.

If you want to give wanderer a try without installing it you can try the demo. When you are ready to self-host it you can head over to wanderer.to to see the full documentation and installation guide. If you really like wanderer and would like to support its development directly you can buy me a coffee.

Thanks again! Cheers Flomp

franklin@lemmy.world on 08 Nov 14:54 next collapse

Ooh I have I was mostly just having fun

melonman@lemmy.world on 08 Nov 14:55 collapse

No fun stop now 😠

When did they add blackjack and hookers?! That’s a hell of a feature update

wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world on 08 Nov 21:20 collapse

I’m all in, as long as the hookers are guys. And gay. And free. And furries. And hung. And kinky. And…

I’m sorry, what were we talking about?

Benjaben@lemmy.world on 08 Nov 22:05 collapse

Lol ah yes, the “fork me daddy!” camp weighing in

Stop it Bender. Wait, not. Indeed, tell me more about this idea yours.

Are there any thoughts of implementing 24/7 GPS tracking support (e.g. being fed by OwnTracks) alongside the activities?

After trying several tools I now ended up with Traccar, but as that’s based on Java and more suited for fleet tracking, it’s not quite ideal.

get_flomped@lemmy.world on 08 Nov 16:05 collapse

Currently no. I really like Dawarich for this purpose and I feel like I wouldn’t be able to add much.

Nice, I think I just saw you added one of my feature requests, so will have to give ot another look.

njordomir@lemmy.world on 08 Nov 20:28 next collapse

I saw this the last time you posted an update and am finally going to have some time to try it. I also gained some docker knowledge since then. Right now, it looks like a nice AllTrails replacement, and below the surface, I see a Strava killer developing!

Also, consider sharing to #bikenight on Mastadon. Lots of nerdy cyclists on there.

This seems really cool! Right now I use GoxPod app in Nextcloud deeded by GPSLogger on my smartphone, but it uses GPX files and having hundreds of them it’s very slow. Is it possible to bulk import files on Wanderer? Can I feed it today directly from GOSLogger (by custom URL maybe)? Thanks!

get_flomped@lemmy.world on 09 Nov 14:29 collapse

Yes, bulk imports are supported. You will need to download them from GOSLogger first though.

Good! What about feeding via HTTP?

suth@lemmy.world on 09 Nov 23:17 next collapse

This is cool and I might give it a shot, but I have to say the name can easily be confused with wandrer.earth. Slightly different purpose but it’s in the same space, so at first I thought this was an open source variant of it.

I love everything about wanderer, just wish that you could look at trails on a full-screened map on mobile. Currently pulling up the trail will provide a small map inside the webpage for you to see the trail, which on desktop works great, but mobile it feels like the map should be the more important aspect (similar to apps like osm, all trails and gaiagps). Because of this I am mostly using it as a database to then download the trail and open it in osm.
